NFL Black Monday (Updated 1/1/13)

Hello,

Today is so-called Black Monday in the NFL. It's the day after the regular season ends and most of the teams that didn't make the playoffs look to make changes. Already Norv Turner and Andy Reid have been fired- or at least are on their way to being fired. (Reid appears to be the front runner to land the Arizona Cardinals job. Some Cowboys fans hope that Turner ends up in Dallas as the Cowboys OC.) I have no idea why either coach was brought back this season. It was clear that both coaches weren't the right fit for their teams after the 2011 season. Other people fired include Chan Gailey, (I have no idea why he was even hired by the Bills at all) Lovie Smith and Romeo Crennel. That's six coaches that have been fired and later a 7th head coach was fired. Also there were several GMs that were fired.

One GM not getting fired is Cowboys GM Jerry Jones. It's good to be the owner, especially since that's the only way he could keep the GM job. "Idiot" Jones will remain GM and Jason Garrett will remain the head coach. And Dallas will remain a mediocre team. Garrett and Gailey are two of the terrible horrible coaches Jones has hired over the years. The Cowboys perfectly resemble's Einstein's famous quote about insanity. He stated that insanity was doing the same things but expecting the same results. Jones has hired a series of bad coaches and they've been mediocre for the last 18 years.

Many people are pointing the finger at Tony Romo for yet another loss in a play or go home game. He's now 1-6 in those type of games. However I've softened on Romo over the years. Do I think he'll get the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory, hell no. But is he better than 3/4ths of the other quarterbacks in the NFL? Yes!

I'd so much rather have Romo than the prima donnas Scam Newton and Jay Cutler. It's no coincidence those two quarterbacks aren't in the playoffs either. Although I hope that Dallas lets Romo play out the final year of his contract before resigning him. Let's see what kind of market value he has before Dallas starts throwing money at him.

The Cowboys latest loss has to be blamed on a complete and systematic failure of the Cowboys, that starts at the top with the cancerous Jones. Clearly he has no idea what he's doing and that trickles down to the rest of the organization. While Sean Payton will be leading the Saints to victory, Garrett will continue to lead the Cowboys to mediocrity. What more do you need to know than Garrett is 21-19 as head coach?

The feel good stories of the year include Chuck Pagano as Colts head coach and Adrian Petersen and the 2,097 yards he rushed for. Two very gutty performances.

With the Cowboys and Bucs eliminated from playoff consideration, that leaves me only San Francisco as one of my teams in the playoffs. I'll also be following, although I don't know if I'll be cheering, for the Seahawks and the Broncos. One team is my sister-in-law's team and the other team is my son's team.

Although I cheer for 5 MLB teams, 3 NFL teams, 1 NBA and various other teams they haven't given me much to cheer for in the playoffs of late. The last time one of my teams won a championship was in 2009 when Real Salt Lake won the MLS Championship. Also that same year the North Carolina Tar Heels won the men's national college basketball championship. Previously in 2007 the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. The time before that was the so-called" Idiots" Red Sox team in 2004. Another one of my teams to win a championship this century is the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Before that it had been a 7 year stretch, back to 1995 when Dallas won the Super Bowl.

My other teams and the last time they won a championship:
San Francisco 49ers: 1994 I wasn't even cheering for the 49ers then, but I was cheering for fellow Mormon Steve Young. If everything breaks right I could see the 49ers winning the Super Bowl this season. I'd love to have another Super Bowl that I'd care to watch.

LA Dodgers: 1988 That was the magical year of Kirk Gibson.
Atlanta Braves: 1995 That was before I became a Braves fan, I was actually cheering against them at the time.
Chicago Cubs: 1908  Sigh.
Pittsburgh Pirates: 1979 I was cheering for the Pirates that year, but not because I was a big fan. I just loved the whole "We Are Family" theme. Pittsburgh quickly went down 3-1 to the Orioles, the Pirates of Willie Stargell and Dave Parker battled back to win the World Series. That was one of the most fun World Series ever.

Honestly the Red Sox and the Dodgers are the most likely of all my MLB teams to win the next of my team's championship. (The Cowboys seem to be going backwards.) Just when do pitchers and catchers report again?

Utah Jazz: Never
Arsenal Gunners: Won the Premier League in 2003-2004, that team was nicknamed the Invincibles. They won the FA Cup in 2005.
USC Trojans last won the National Championship for the 2004 season, later that title was vacated for improprieties related to the recruitment of Reggie Bush. And never have the Trojans seemed more further away from than the national title than yesterday's debacle against Georgia Tech. Ga. Tech is a team that were destroyed by the average BYU Cougars in Atlanta earlier in the season.
North Carolina Men's basketball: 2009, 2005

Another team that needs to make some major changes are my Utah Jazz. Right now they treading water and need to dramatically improve. It's clear the team as currently constituted isn't going to win any thing. Even if they made the playoffs, they would be quickly eliminated. They insist they have a long term plan in place. I'm hoping so.

Dallas Cowboys 2012 Season Wrap Up

Hello,

These are the predictions I made this past Wednesday about the Dallas Cowboys against the Redskins:

1) Due to a dumb coaching move or moves by Garrett, the Cowboys will lose. This is the same man who iced his own kicker a couple of years ago.

What happened: Garrett called an okay game, but he really is overmatched as a coach. His coaching record is now 21-19, a record that perfectly indicates what kind of coach he is. An average record for an average coach. I did think it was curious when Garrett decided not to go for a field goal at the end of the first half, especially with such a nearly automatic kicker. I have no confidence in anything he does.

2) The Redskins will jump out to at least a two touchdown lead. Then only at that point the Cowboys will go to the hurry up offense and make a come back. The Cowboys have been their most successful on offense when they've been in the hurry up this season. Yes the Cowboys are better when their head coach isn't in charge of the offense. What does that tell you? However Garrett doesn't like to use the hurry up until he absolutely has to.

What happened: The Redskins lead a majority of the game, but never lead by two touchdowns. Maybe if Griffin had been fully healthy they would have. I only remember seeing the Cowboys going into the hurry up for just a few places.

3) DeMarco Murray will have another damaging fumble and Miles Austin will have a few drops. Also I wouldn't be surprised if either injury prone player gets injured in this game.

What happened: This was one of the easier predictions to make. Overall DeMarco Murray played a great game and didn't have any turnovers. However Miles Austin was a complete disgrace again. The injury prone player missed time for yet another injury. He also completely disappeared. He was targeted 3 times and had 0 receptions. It's time for Miles Austin to go away.

4) Tony Romo and Dez Bryant will play out of their heads again and have the Cowboys on the verge of the playoffs, but will finish just short. In the most crucial situation of the game Garrett will decide not to go to Bryant.

What happened: Romo and Bryant were both serviceable but neither player played great. Romo had 3 soul crushing interceptions, including the final one that really hurt the Cowboys. Romo is now 1-6 in win or go home games. The Cowboys have missed the playoffs 4 times in the last 5 years and are now 2-11 since 2000 in Week 17 of the regular season. Romo did choke in this game, but in no way is he the biggest problem. He is what he is. He's better than most quarterbacks in the NFL, but I also don't think he's good enough to get the Cowboys to the next level.

Enough can't be said about the courage that Bryant played with down the final stretch of this season. He played with a broken finger. Not only did he play, but he played well. He was the most valuable Cowboys player this season. Not let's just hope that he doesn't do something stupid in the off season. When he has too much time on his hands and gets bored, that's when he usually does something very stupid.

5) We'll see Jerry's ugly face way too many times.

What happened: The first time we saw his ugly face was too many times.

My final prediction, the Cowboys will lose by double figures and finish 8-8 yet again. However Idiot Jerry will stick with Jason Garrett for another year.  That means about another 8-8 season next year.

What happened: The Cowboys lost by double figures, 28-18, and did finish 8-8 again. Unfortunately the Cowboys were just good enough to probably save Garrett's job. Also Jones has a man crush on Romo. So not only will he be back next season, but Jones will sign him to extension. Whether you like Romo or not, he's going to be the Cowboys quarterback for the next few years unless of an injury. The Cowboys will continue being mediocre for the foreseeable future.

Jerry Jones you suck and you are a complete idiot. Please step down as Cowboys GM before the tarnish is completely worn off the Cowboys. I'm not even mad about the Cowboys choking yet again, I'm more resigned to it. I mean it's not a big surprise. But I hope that this collapse will finally spur Jones to make some significant changes.

Namely for Jones to let someone that knows what they are doing to take over as GM. Fire Garrett tomorrow. Get rid of Austin, Mike Jenkins, Orlando Scandrick and a few others.

The Travesty of the "Les Mis" Movie.

Hello,

I'm listening to the Highlights CD of the "Les Miserables" movie music. I'm sorry, but I'm extremely disappointed by it. Russell Crowe can't sing worth a lick. He tramples on the legacy of all the great singers who have sung as Javert. I don't blame Crowe though, I blame the person who cast him. His acting was fine, but his singing is atrocious. Also Hugh Jackman isn't worthy of filling Jean ValJean's shoes. And who in the hell is the idiot that cast Borat as Thenadier?

Although most people I know love the movie version of "Les Mis", I'm not one of those. I'm very disappointed by some of the "singers" they had to sing many of these iconic songs. For the most part the acting is good, the cinema photography is amazing and the story is very much the same as in the movie. For me the main thing that really hurt the movie is the poor performances of some of the songs.

Russell Crowe singing "Stars" is unbelievably bad. Not only does he sing it poorly, but he neuters all the emotion out of that amazing song. I couldn't find Crowe's version of "Stars" on youtube, I don't blame them for hiding his "performance" either.

Here's Norm Lewis' version of "Stars", from his first note we see how powerful both he and the song are:

This is Philip Quast's equally amazing version of "Stars". The watered down version of the "Les Mis" movie is what happens when you hire "names" over singers. Ah, what could have been:

Here's an example of Crowe and Jackman "singing". For those who've listened to the Original Broadway recording all these years, this is extremely unfulfilling:

From the opening of the 25th Anniversary of "Les Mis" on stage, you feel the power of this amazing music. However in the movie, it's not quite the same. Can you blame the people responsible for the movie version of "Les Mis" not to have too many clips on the internet. Also in the below video Alfie Boe and Norm Lewis show how the above song should be sung, starting at the the 2:37 mark.

Here's the Sasha Baren Cohen/ ruined movie version of "Master Of The House". Cohen's accent is so bad, this is a very dumbed down version of this amazing song. This performance reminds me of how a not very good "American Idol" contestant tries to sing a song by Whitney Houston. Cohen's version is so bad that I had to stop listening to it. However I thought Helena Bonham Carter did a good job. Also how many times was the movie going to tell the Cosette/Collette joke? It was funny the first time, but quickly lost it's charm. Cohen's "Master of the House" is so bad that I couldn't even listen to the whole thing.

Here's Matt Lucas singing "Master of the House" as it should be sung:

This is my favorite version of "Master of the House", from the 10th Anniversary of "Les Mis":

Not every song is ruined in the movie. No, not even close. Here are some of my favorite songs sung in the movie. Anne Hathaway's "I Dreamed A Dream":

Eddie Raymayne's amazing version of "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables". This is especially powerful in the movie:

I also loved Isabelle Allen's "Castle On A Cloud" (This was the best video I found.):

This is monmonsnowseason6 combination video of Samantha Barks singing "On My Own" on both the stage and in the "Les Mis" movie:

I like Barks here as well on "On My Own":

I've got to give some love to Lea Solanga as well, "I Dreamed A Dream":

Here are some of the other highlights from the best musical ever. This is a very spine tingling version of  "One Day More":

"Do You Hear The People Sing"?

This version features Lea Solanga as well, "Lovely Ladies/ Fantine's Arrest":

Here's the whole version of the 25th Anniversary Concert. Enjoy:

What Makes A Song Great?

Hello,

With there being so many kinds of great music in the world, I'm wondering what makes a song great? What exactly is the key element (s) that makes a song great? Is it the music, the melody, the singer, the lyrics, the feeling you get when you hear it, at what life stage you were/are at when you heard it the first time?

With me listening to all sorts of music lately as I compile my Top 500 songs of all-time blog, I've been thinking about just that topic. And honestly I haven't come up with a satisfactory answer yet. Literally I don't have a clue.

Here are some vastly different songs. All are great but they also are very different.

This song captures my ears right from it's very first note. Why is that? What makes this song so good? For me this song captures the feeling of loss so well. This was a very popular song when I was going through my divorce. Hearing this song always brings me back to that place in my life. But other people love this song that have never been divorced, so what is it about this song that makes it so great?

Lady Antebellum's amazing "Need You Now":

And why is this song that's completely different also so good? This is a fun song, a song that would be fun to sing along with at a concert.

?ZZ Ward's "Put The Gun Down":

Again another completely different song, but again another excellent song. Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness":

Or  how about George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today"?:

Or about Phillip Phillip's "Home":

Rush's "Tom Sawyer":

Or Tchaikovsky's "Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy":

Or Taco's "Puttin' On The Ritz":

Again all these songs come from multiple genres but yet have a lot of greatness in them. I was hoping to uncover some answers as I thought about the question of a song's greatness. However I haven't come up with much yet. I think any song that we think is great has some emotional tie for us. Hmm?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Cowboys-Redskins 12/30/12: Win Or Go Home (Updated 12/27/12)

Hello,

Sunday is the big day for both the Cowboys and Redskins. Dallas has to win to get in, if the Redskins win they will also get in. The Redskins are trying to win their first division title since 1999. They also can still get in if other games break their way. Originally this was suppose to be an early game Sunday, however NBC "flexed" it to Sunday Night Football. NBC I don't appreciate that. I liked that originally the game was going to be played while I was at church. Then when I got home the game would be almost over. That's what happened this past Sunday, and I didn't have to hear about the Cowboys melting down.

In the previous years if Dallas was in a similar situation, I'd be hoping that the Cowboys would win. However that's not the case this season. Not only do I hope the Cowboys lose, but I hope that they get blown out. Why? Because I hate Jason Garrett and he's shown he's not going to take the Cowboys to the next level. I don't even know if he'll take the Cowboys to the playoffs. He's an average coach and that's exactly what his record indicates. Garrett has been much better at getting moral victories than actual victories. Too bad nobody remember moral victories.

I especially want Garrett sent on his way if the Cowboys have any chance of grabbing Sean Payton. If Cowboys fans want their team to get to the next level, they need a next level coach. Payton has won a Super Bowl! What has Garrett won? Not a damn thing. He's been with the Cowboys in a high level position for five years and the Cowboys have only made the playoffs one time. They have a chance to go again this year, but I doubt they'll make it.

Dallas has been in win and get in situations twice in the time Garrett has been with the Cowboys. The first time was in 2008 when the head coach was Wade Phillips, one of Idiot Jerry's many terrible coaching hires. Garrett was the offensive coordinator at the time and his offense was only able to score 6 points. There probably shouldn't be too much blame laid at the feet of Garrett as the Eagles were just on fire that day. The Eagles weren't going to be denied.Phillips just didn't have the Cowboys prepared. The Eagles cruised to a 44-6 victory, one of the most spectacular failures in Cowboys history.

The second time the Cowboys were in the win and get in situation was last season. Sadly Garrett had become head coach by that point. The Cowboys continued their unimpressive string of choking down the stretch. The Giants jumped out to a 21-0 lead and coasted to a 31-14 victory. The Cowboys could have won and gone into the playoffs, instead they finished third place in the NFC East.

Oh yeah and on the final week of the season the Cowboys are 2-10 since 2000. In case you are wondering yes that's the worst last game of the season record by any NFL team. What's different this year so the Cowboys can actually win? Romo is 1-5 in win or go home games.

Some predictions about Sunday's game.

1) Due to a dumb coaching move or moves by Garrett, the Cowboys will lose. This is the same man who iced his own kicker a couple of years ago.

3) DeMarco Murray will have another damaging fumble and Miles Austin will have a few drops. Also I wouldn't be surprised if either injury prone player gets injured in this game.

4) Tony Romo and Dez Bryant will play out of their heads again and have the Cowboys on the verge of the playoffs, but will finish just short. In the most crucial situation of the game Garrett will decide not to go to Bryant.

5) We'll see Jerry's ugly face way too many times.

My final prediction, the Cowboys will lose by double figures and finish 8-8 yet again. However Idiot Jerry will stick with Jason Garrett for another year.  That means about another 8-8 season next year.

"Les Miserables" Revs Up But Never Quite Takes Off

Hello,

I need to state up front that I've been a fan of "Les Miserables" for several years. I've seen it on the theatre stage from high school to Broadway productions at least 7 or 8 times. I've listened to the songs on the 3 disc Original Broadway production dozens of times at least. Although I'm a uber-fan I went into the movie with a lot of trepidation. I'm used to Hollywood ruining things, like having Russell Crowe in a role that requires someone that can sing for instance.

To much hype and buzz "Les Miserables" arrived in theaters on Christmas Day. Sadly "Les Mis" is good, but not great. Hugh Jackman gives a good performance as Jean ValJean. I can see why Anne Hathaway is being mentioned for Oscar consideration. She's absolutely amazing as Fantine. Unlike some of the other actors, she brings power to the songs she sings. I wish the director, Tom Hooper, would have let the scenes build on each other, there's too much time between scenes. The movie never quite takes off. I love "Les Mis" but the last 10-15 minutes have always made the play feel a little long to me. I was hoping that Hooper would streamline the end a bit.

This is one of the musical highlights of the movie. Anne Hathaway singing "I Dreamed A Dream" (sadly I couldn't find her singing the full version of this song):

Overall I'd give the movie a B, it's much better than the critics say. Most reviews have been unfairly harsh in regards to this movie, finding plot holes and commenting on how many close ups there were. Entertainment Weekly's review is especially harsh. The reviewer gives the movie a C, but read the review and you would guess his review would have been a F.

"Les Mis" has never been about the overall story, it's about the redemption of Jean ValJean. It's also about the music, some of the greatest music ever written. Speaking of which, here's "Suddenly" the new song written for this movie.

I also don't like that the movie took out part of "On Parole/The Bishop". The part after Valjean is captured after stealing the priest's silver. That's always been my favorite part of the whole play. I'm specifically talking about the part at about the 3:30 mark.

These are the referred to lyrics:

He let me eat my fill
I had the lion's share
The silver in my hand
Cost twice what I had earned
In all those nineteen years
That lifetime of despair
And yet he trusted me.
The old fool trusted me -
He's done his bit of good
I played the grateful serf
And thanked him like I should
But when the house was still,
I got up in the night
Took the silver
Took my flight!

Isabelle Allen does a good job in limited time on screen. For being so young she has such a great voice on "Castle On A Cloud":

Crowe was obviously cast using the corporate America casting model. Meaning he was cast because of who he is, not because of his voice. There's nothing wrong with his acting, but every time he sings the movie screeches to a halt. What's suppose to be Javert's show stopper is the song "Stars", however in Crowe's hands it's a hot mess. Crowe is terribly miscast as Javert, the person in that role needs to have an amazing voice. He's not that good of a singer. Years from now when people talk about "Les Mis", I predict many of those will be mocking Crowe's performance.

Why couldn't have Norm Lewis been cast as Javert? This is how "Stars" should sound:

Another miscast actor and not a great singer is Sasha Baron Cohen. Every time Cohen comes on screen I see Borat. Like with the Borat character, Cohen overplays Thenadier. Helena Bonham Carter does a much better as Mademoiselle Thenadier. The Thenadiers seem so vital on the stage, however in the movie they feel extraneous. I also don't like how "Master Of The House" has been neutered.

As I write this blog I'm listening to the movie's highlights soundtrack. I realize how much the movie soundtrack is neutered. Hooper took some of the greatest songs ever and stripped them of some of their soul and power. However Eddie Redmayne sings "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" with great power, he completely owns that song. His performance of that song has made that song so much more vital. Samantha Barks also does a great job singing "On My Own".

And how is this song not on the so-called highlights "Les Mis" movie edition? This is "Do You Hear People Sing?":

Also how is this song not on the highlights? "Who Am I" is perhaps the most powerful moment in "Les Mis". Jean Valjean acknowledges to himself just who he is and what he represents.

Hello,

This is a Merry Christmas wish to everyone. Enjoy everything about this day: friends, family and gifts. Those are all very important parts of the magic of Christmas. But Christmas just isn't about those things. It's the day we celebrate the birth of our Savior, this is Michael Crawford's "Mary Did You Know".

themusicaddict's Top 100 CD's of All-Time by Artist: A-E (Updated 12/29/12)

Hello,

Although I'm anal enough to actually sit down and organize this list into my Top 100 A-E CDs ever, I don't have the time for that. These CDs are organized alphabetically by artist. Later I'll probably add some videos from youtube.com for selected songs. This is obviously a work in progress. For the most part I'll not be including Greatest Hits collections on this list. Soundtracks will be under the name of the play or movie. Any and all suggestions welcome. (I'm breaking this Top 100 into chunks to see if that will help or just make this more unwieldy.)

) AC/DC "Back In Black", "Black Ice", "High Voltage", "Who Made Who" (I almost put "Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap" here, but it's just not good enough. If I think of a CD title and the word "classic" doesn't immediately jump to my mind, it will not make this list.)

) Bryan Adams: "Reckless"

) Ryan Adams

) Adele: "21", (While "19" was certainly a decent enough CD, Adele hadn't discovered the voice that made "21" so amazing.)

) Christina Aguilera

) Arcade Fire: "Funeral"

) B-52's

) Band Of Skulls

) Beatles: The most overrated band of all-time.

) Black Eyed Peas:

) Black Stone Cherry

) Bon Jovi: "New Jersey", "Slippery When Wet"

) Boston:

) Garth Brooks: "No Fences", "Ropin' The Wind"

) Tracy Chapman: "Tracy Chapman"

) Neneh Cherry: "Raw Like Sushi"

) Chicago

) Phil Collins: "No Jacket Required"

) Christopher Cross: "Christopher Cross"

) Cinderella

) Coldplay: Um, no.

) Counting Crows: "August and Everything After", "Recovering The Satellites"

) Dead or Alive: "Youthquake"

) Def Leppard: "Pyromania", "Hysteria",

) Dio: "Holy Diver", "Last In Line"

) Dire Straits: "Brothers In Arms"

) Dixie Chicks: "Fly", "Taking The Long Way", "Wide Open Spaces"

) The Eagles: "The Long Run"

) "Evita" Soundtrack The Madonna and Antonio version, although I did like the Patti Lupone version as well.

themusicaddict's 7 + 1 Least Wanted NBA Players On My Team (Updated 12/28/12)

Hello,

This is my list of the 7 NBA players I least want on my team:

1) Carlos Boozer: Chicago Bulls. The Bulls made one of the worst free agency signings a couple of years ago when they signed Boozer. He's in the third year of a 5 year- $80 million dollar contract. $16 million a year for 14 points, nearly 10 rebounds and no defense? A deal that's good for everybody but the Chicago Bulls. Boozer was able to legally rob the short sighted Bulls. What did the Bulls get? They got an all about himself, no defense playing, ridiculously screaming every time he manages to have a good play. The scream which draws attention to himself, not the team he allegedly represents. He'll eventually be a player that the Bulls use their amnesty on. You'll notice that last night when the Knicks-Bulls game got physical, Boozer didn't want to do anything with that.

A player that has been booed by most of the NBA teams he has played for. He's also had signs held up about him that says Loozer in his home stadium.

2) Andrew "No Knees" Bynum: Philadelphia 76ers In one of the worst trades in NBA history the 76ers absolutely got fleeced when they traded for Bynum. He hasn't played any games so far this season and just barely started on step one of a 6 step rehabilitation process. I'd be surprised if Bynum ever plays a game for the 76ers. This is the last year of his contract and I predict he'll be not playing for another team next year. He'll be paid handsomely to sit on someone else's bench next season.

He's also one of the biggest head cases in the NBA. I don't even thinks he wants to play in the NBA, just doing it because he's paid so well for doing so little. He eventually will retire and then maybe he can be a professional bowler. Allegedly Bynum got injured while bowling. Who gets injured bowling, especially a so-called professional athlete? He's such a waste. I'd be surprised if he's still in the NBA when he's 30.

3) Ron Arrest: LA Lakers The reasons why I'd never want him on my team. 1) He's a thug 2) He can't shoot 3) He's a major head case and 4) He's old. He won't be in the NBA in a couple of years and the NBA will be better off without him.

4) Dwight Howard: LA Lakers A tremendously gifted and athletic player, too bad he has so little heart. Like Bynum, it seems he could care less about playing in the NBA. The best example of his lack of love for the game is his below 50% free throw shooting this season. I love how he acts like this happy go lucky guy. But from him holding the Magic hostage for almost a year, we know that's not the case. Howard's protracted negotiations makes how Carmelo Anthony handled his leaving the Nuggets look very classy. After under performing this season, I expect Howard to milk his free agency for all the publicity he can get. He'll eventually sign with some team who'll be extremely happy to have him. But like the Boozer contract mentioned above, the player will get the better end of the deal by far.

Howard is making $19.5 million, how much will he be making with his next contract? I'm just glad that he won't be eating up my team's salary cap.

Updated: On 12/23 Howard was a virtual no-show in their game against the first place Warriors. He quickly picked up 4 personal fouls and a technical foul and only played a few minutes in the first 3 quarters. He finished with as many rebounds as fouls- 6. He also added 11 points and 3 turnovers. In espn.com's recap of last night's Lakers game, his name isn't even mentioned. As the kids would say: SMH.

On 12/26 Howard was ejected from the game for his flagrant foul on Kenneth Faried. It was a stupid play. I don't think that Howard wanted to hurt him, I just think he didn't want to be in the game anymore. After shooting his free throws better, he only made 4 of 9 against the Nuggets.

5) Amare Stoudemire: New York Knicks. Another player that hasn't played a game the whole season. Stoudemire won't play in the Knicks game tonight, but will accompany the Lakers on their Western road swing. For what he's paid, he brings relatively little to the Knicks. It's no coincidence that the Knicks are playing so well without Stoudemire in the lineup. The next time he plays defense will be the first time. (Thanks to Rick Majerus for one of my favorite quotes of his.) I look forward to him getting back as the Knicks will then go back to their pathetic offense of last season. He has a lot more heart than either Howard or Bynum and I expect him to be playing sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately he hasn't realized that he's no longer a star, he's now just an overpaid role player.

6) Carmelo Anthony: New York Knicks For some reason Anthony is sporting a Hitler like mustache now, it makes him look ridiculous. Also making him looking ridiculous is the clothes he was wearing last night in the post game. It looked like it was a military outfit of some kind, perhaps leftover costumes from "The Dictator" film set? Fittingly enough he looked ridiculous in it especially after shying away from the fracas that broke out in the Bulls-Knicks game. It seemed he was kicked out more for whining about the calls that he wasn't getting as opposed to being overly physical.

Anthony will be the Knick that will be hurt the most by Stoudemire coming back, Anthony will be forced to share the ball more. Although Anthony was ejected from last night's game he still got off 25 shots in 37 minutes.  The man hasn't met a shot he doesn't like or isn't willing to take. While he does have some offensive gifts, he doesn't play a lot of defense.

The Knicks seem to be willing to run their offense through him. It has worked so far, but eventually it will stop working. Once again the Knicks will be exposed in the playoffs for what they really are.

7) DeMarcus Cousins: Sacramento Kings Cousins is an incredibly athletic big man. However as someone that has had things handed to him his whole life, he also is incredibly immature. Since players like Cousins have become so entitled, they don't know how to handle even the smallest amount of adversity. Instead of reacting with humility, they respond with a temper tantrum. They then don't understand why they are finally being held to a certain standard.

Cousins has been suspended indefinitely for behavior in a game last night. Afterwards he was contrite and apologized to his team. Maybe he finally is starting to understand how to truly be a professional player.

8) Pau Gasol: How did I forget about the Big Stiffy? Gasol played a good game against the Nuggets, but he only grabbed 6 rebounds. How does a 7 footer only grab six rebounds? He also had 3 turnovers and 0 fouls. 0 fouls, was he not playing defense against the Nuggets? Also let's not forget all the injuries Gasol is facing as his career is quickly winding down.

I predict none of the above players will ever win a NBA Championship as a main player for their team. Gasol did, but he was carried by Kobe to the titles. (Thanks to espn.com for some of the information mentioned above, specifically Boozer's stats and the latest news about Cousins.)

BYU-Poinsettia Bowl Tonight!, Jabari Parker Is Going To Be A Blue Devil

Hello,

Tonight 7-5 BYU plays in their bowl game, they are playing SDSU in the Poinsettia Bowl. The 9-3 Aztecs will be playing in their home stadium. This bowl game feels very anti-climactic. It's been a long and disappointing season. It also hasn't been that fun.

Whether BYU wins or lose tonight I'll be glad that this season is over for one big reason. BYU will no longer have Riley Nelson as their starting quarterback. It seems that he's still injured and may only play a few plays tonight. Let's hope, because I'd rather have James Lark and the better chance of winning he brings with him. The next time Bronco Mendenhall falls in love with a quarterback, I hope it's at least a good quarterback.

It seems BYU Football has taken a step back because of Bronco Mendenhall's insistence on sticking with Nelson come hell or high water. Instead of going with a younger quarterback and giving him some valuable experience he kept on trotting out the very unreliable Nelson. Nelson otherwise known as Mr. Turnover. He has an amazing ability to turn the easiest and most simple plays into turnovers.

The only underclassman quarterback BYU played this year was Taysom Hill. With BYU coaches carelessness the probable quarterback of the future was injured. What's particularly aggravating is that he was injured on a play that he should have just kneeled down on. (I blame that on the coaches, not the just off a mission freshman quarterback.) At that point Hill was out for the rest of the season. BYU's top two quarterbacks were seniors. Again, instead of giving more playing time to other under classmen the seniors received the bulk of the playing time. Next season Hill will have the most experience of a BYU quarterback. Although he has a tremendous upside over Nelson, what he doesn't have is a lot of crucial experience.

BYU's main rival, Utah, faced a similar situation. Go with a senior that might give them a better chance to win this year or a freshman with a ton of upside. Wisely Utah decided to bypass the senior, Jon Hays. He was a decent player, but this was his last season of eligibility. Instead Utah went with their quarterback of the future, Travis Wilson. There's no guarantee that Wilson will have a better career than Hill. However the experience he gained this year will give him an advantage in the future.

I won't miss Nelson for even a second, but there are two players who I'll miss a lot if they leave to the NFL early. That's Junior wide receiver Cody Hoffman. He's probably been the most important player to BYU's offense this season. Also Junior Linebacker Kyle Van Noy is considering going to the NFL. He's been one of the leaders of this season's extremely tough defense. Both players would be missed quite a bit going into BYU's brutal schedule next season. However the players need to do what is best for them and their families. Good luck to Hoffman and Van Noy no matter what decision they make. IF they do leave going out with a bowl victory tonight would be sweet!

Good luck to James Lark and his fellow Cougar teammates as they battle the Aztecs tonight!

Also today was the day that Chicago high school phenom Jabari Parker announced where he'll play college basketball. BYU was on his final list, but I doubted that he'd pick the Cougars. Honestly he would have been crazy too. I don't know how much difference it will make as he'll only be in college for only one year probably.

Updated: Jabari Parker announced he'll be going to Duke. Although they are one of my least favorite college basketball teams, I still wish Jabari the best.

Is Run-D.M.C.'s "Raising Hell" The Greatest Rap CD of All-Time?

Hello,

Is Run-D.M.C.'s "Raising Hell" the greatest rap CD of all-time? I say "yes" and by a long distance. RIP Jam Master Jay.

Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is also an amazing CD. It's too bad she has stopped making new music.

Listening to these songs again has been fun. Thanks to my brother for getting me into this album, which is what they were called back in the day. These songs take me back to a good time in my life and also the mid-80's. That was right in the heart of some of the greatest music ever.

It's good to see rap music that not only rocks but the lyrics aren't offensive. This is probably at least a Top 500 all-time best CD in any genre.

The best song on "Raising Hell" is "It's Tricky":

Here's probably the most famous "Raising Hell" song. I post this video in spite of how tired I am of Steven Tyler. It's been amazing that he can turn just a few great songs into a career. This is the Run-D.M.C.'s improved on version of "Walk This Way":

Warning: the "acting" in this video is atrocious.

Let's not forget the title track, "Raising Hell":

"My Adidas":

"Hit It Run" (Live on "Soul Train"):

Perhaps the funniest song on the CD, "You Be Illin' ":

"Peter Piper":

"Perfection": (Thumbs up to any song that has the word copacetic in the lyrics.)

Here's a preview from MTV with the great Martha Quinn. This is back when MTV was relevant, I know for many of you youngsters you don't remember that.

Here's the full track in it's full fledged glory:

"Is It Live":

I've known a few "Dumb Girls":

"Son of Byford":

"Proud To Be Black"(Live on "Soul Train"):

Here's the CD "Raising Hell" in it's entirety:

A bonus song for you that was released around the same time as "Raising Hell" . It seems appropriate this time of year:

One Week from "Les Mis" and "Christmas": Could It Get Any Better

Hello,

I love Christmas time and I also love "Les Miserables", this year they are both going to be on the same day. It's about time the musical version of "Les Miserables" hits the theaters. And that time is one week from today. (I apologize for any Jonas sightings.)

Here are some of my favorite songs from "Les Mis". This seems to be a high school production of "Valjean Arrested/ValJean Forgiven". I fully support high school productions of musicals. In fact I saw a high school production of "Les Mis" at my alma mater (Woods Cross High) and they did a great job.

Here's a more professional version:

"At The End Of The Day":

The rather ribald "Lovely Ladies" (This will be offensive to some):

"Who Am I": (I really like this Jean ValJean, he has a great voice.)

I love how powerful these lyrics are:

"And so Javert, you see it's true
That man bears no more guilt than you!
Who am I?
24601!"

"Fantine's Arrest":

"The Confrontation":

"Master Of The House":

This is Javert's (Norm Lewis) finest musical moment, "Stars":

"Red and Black":

"Do You Hear The People Sing":

"In My Life":

"One Day More!":

"On My Own":

"Turning/ Empty Chairs At Empty Tables":

What I Won't Be Writing About Today 12/17/12

Hello,

Things I won't be writing about today:

- Gun control. I just don't know if a consensus is ever going to be reached on that issue.

- The Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl hopes. Somehow the Cowboys are winning, in spite of their head coach and terrible owner. The Cowboys have broken my heart too many times for me to completely believe in them. I'm not going to fully buy into them this time either. And I'll never fully buy into Jason Garrett, I have no confidence in him.

- The 49ers: now there's a fun team to watch. They have a solid defense and a solid offense, I loved watching them put a beat down on the Patriots last night. Although tip of the hat to the Patriots for coming back. I think Jim Harbaugh may be the best head coach in the NFL. The 49ers will be in good hands as long as he's their coach.

- The Seahawks or Broncos. I haven't ever been a big fan of either. In fact, I've hated the Broncos for many years, because living in Utah we were forced to watch their game every week. Then last season they had the most obnoxious player in the NFL. Thankfully they got rid of him and brought in one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. How can anyone hate Peyton Manning? But my son adopted the Broncos, so I'll always cheer for them a bit. Also my sister-in-law cheers for the Seahawks. She's been a big fan of them forever, she's not a bandwagon fan. However I will still be cheering for the 49ers when they play Seattle this week.

- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although they are one of my three favorite NFL teams, what is there to say about them after their 41-0 beat down at the hands of the Saints yesterday? That same Saints team is going to Dallas to play the Cowboys this week. It will be an interesting contrast seeing the Saints's explosive offense against Dallas's injury depleted defense.

- Utah State or BYU football. Although congrats to the Aggies for going 11-2 and winning a bowl game. They clearly were the best college football team in Utah this season. BYU plays their bowl game on Thursday. I hope BYU wins. But the thing I'm most excited about is that Riley Nelson's career will finally be over. Other than Bronco Mendenhall, I don't think anyone will miss him.

- How much I'm loving the limited selection on TV. I love the Christmas season, but television is such a wasteland this time of year. It's hard to believe with so many channels and Comcast On Demand, there still isn't anything to watch. I'm not a big TV fan, but it's a good way to relax after a long day. I'm glad we still have new episodes of "Catfish, "Underemployed" and "Vegas". If you want to watch some very bad football, tonight's Monday Night Football is Jets-Titans. If you watch that game you are truly a diehard football fan.

- "Sarah's Key": This is the book I'm currently reading. I've read about the first third and I'm absolutely loving it. The thing I like the most is the juxtaposition of the stories of Sarah and Julia. For those that don't know Sarah's and Julia's stories alternate every other chapter. Sarah's story is about her and some of her family being rounded up by the French police for the Nazi's in 1942. Julia's story is about her writing about the 60th anniversary of this roundup, which started at the Vel' d' Hiv'. At first Julia's story was much more interesting to me, however now I'm liking both stories about the same now.

- The "Les Miserables" movie. I'm so looking forward to this movie and I hope they haven't screwed up. I'll be seeing this movie on opening day, Christmas Day. I just wish that Anne Hathaway was the one that was playing Cosette.

"Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind": An Unheralded Masterpiece

Hello,

Never forget: Prayers to all those who've suffered a loss in the Connecticut school shootings. God bless you.

I've long considered the 1980's the best decade for music ever. Frankly since the 1980's each decade's music has been worse. I always say 80's music was so good, even it's rap music was good. One of the best CDs of the 80's was RUN-D.M.C.'s "Raising Hell". The 90's had a lot of good songs, but not as many as the 80's. But the 2000s was music's nadir with a lot of crap rap and hip hop music taking over. The 2010s so far is off to a good start, highlighted by the amazing Adele.

80's music was incredibly diverse from Def Leppard, MC Hammer, Paula Abdul, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and dozens of others dominating the airwaves. Look at all the genres that had big moments in the 80's: hair metal, new wave, pop, rock. This was also an era before corporate idiots took over radio and radio was so much better.

Coming out the last year of the 80's was 1989's "Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind". This perhaps is Linda Ronstadt's best CD. I've previously published two blogs featuring some of the prettiest songs of all-time. This CD is an album full of pretty songs. This album is perfect for Sunday/ relaxing times listening.

This CD probably feels more like a 70's CD. But it's that dynamic that highlights just how diverse music was in the 80's. (I would so go back to the 80's, as long as I could bring the internet with me :) Here are some of the best songs from that CD, although each of the 12 songs are great. Let's start off with the title track (only 813 views?). "Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind":

"Still Within The Sound of My Voice":

Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt "Don't Know Much":

Another one from Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt, "All My Life":

"Goodbye My Friend":

"I Keep It Hid":

There were a couple of upbeat songs on this CD. This is one of them, "Trouble Again":

Prettiest Songs of All-Time Part 2 (Updated 1/6/13)

Hello,

I apologize in advance if I duplicate songs in my prettiest songs of all-time blogs.

I was never a big fan of Oasis. I always thought the Gallagher brothers are obnoxious and arrogant. Frankly their music never lived up to that arrogance. However "Wonderwall" is truly is one of the best songs of all-time:

Again I'm not sure how Coldplay became such a big band. I was irritated that Chris Martin was even invited to sing at the Superstorm Sandy concert. But again "Yellow" is a pretty good song:

Lifehouse has several songs that could go on this list, this is "You and Me":

Here are a couple of James Bond themed pretty songs. First Shirley Bassey's "Diamond Are Forever":

Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better":

Chris DeBurgh's "Lady In Red":

The above song reminds me of a scene from the movie "Always", in which "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" played:

The Platters version of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". This song is one of the all-time great fake out songs. The music is so sweet and pretty, but the lyrics are so heartbreaking.

James Taylor's "Fire And Rain":

Last night someone on Facebook wrote about this song. Little River Band's "Cool Change":

The Commodores "Sail On":

England Dan and John Ford Coley's "I'd Really Love To See You Again":

Boz Scaggs "Look What You've Done To Me":

Is this the prettiest song of all-time? James Ingram's "Just Once":

Billy Ocean's "Suddenly":

I realize that the Beatles originally sang this song, but I prefer Billy Ocean's version of "The Long and Winding Road":

The Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps":

Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence":
