(FInished September 26th, 2018) The Blues: An Education, Part 1

Hello,

I'm a white dude that lives in Utah, what the hell do I know about the Blues? I'll be honest I don't know a whole lot about the workings of the Blues. But I've had my heart broken and I've been divorced, I've lost people I've loved, I've had down days and I've had down years. I've battled with my self esteem etc. So although I don't know a lot about the Blues, I do know a lot about the blues. These are some of my favorite Blues classics.

In my not so humble opinion the two kings of the Blues are B.B. King and Muddy Waters. But I'm going to focus on some of the other great Blues artists first.

Led Zeppelin

"I Can't Quit You Babe":

"Whole Lotta Love":

"When The Levee Breaks":

"Dazed and Confused":

"Since I've Been Loving You":

Elmore James

"Dust My Broom":

Howlin' Wolf

"Spoonful":

John Lee Hooker

"Boom Boom":

Little Walter

"My Babe":

Many consider him a legend, but I've always been kinda been meh on him. Robert Johnson

"Crossroad Blues":

"Hellhound On My Trail":

Not really a Blues song per se, but it seems like it would fit in with that kind of music. Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing":

(Finished September 23rd, 2018) The Best of Rick Rubin, The 80s

Hello,

I wanted to break out of what I've been blogging about lately. I did a bit of searching my own blog and I wrote a series of blogs about Robert "Mutt" Lange. He's one of the most famous music producers and I thought I should write about another great music producer. I decided to write about Rick Rubin. And after trying to break out of 80's centric blogs, I fell right back into a 80's centric blog. Rick Rubin seemed had a big hand in the early and best 80's Hip Hop. He pretty much worked with all the best of the best in Hip Hop. All of these songs individually may not have been produced by Rick Rubin, but they were on CDs that he helped produced.

Hello,

(Finished September 22nd, 2018) themusicaddict's Top 16 Greatest 80s Soundtracks #10 "The Lost Boys"

Hello,

I've been working on the Top 16 80's soundtrack countdown since July. I'm now up to the Top Ten with the excellent film "The Lost Boys":

One of the best things about 80's movies is the zany humor, actual stories (not just a bunch of explosions) and the requisite babe. The gorgeous Jami Gertz more than held up her part in this regard:

From Wikipedia.org:
The film is about two brothers who move to California and end up fighting a gang of young vampires. The title is a reference to the Lost Boys in J. M. Barrie's stories about Peter Pan and Neverland, who, like the vampires, never grow up.
The film was followed by two direct-to-video sequels, Lost Boys: The Tribe and Lost Boys: The Thirst and spawned a franchise with the same name.
These are the best songs from this movie:

1) INXS and Jimmy Barnes "Good Times":

2) Lou Gramm "Lost In The Shadows":

3) Roger Daltrey "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me":

Not the best song, but it's good enough. 4) INXS and Jimmy Barnes "Laying Down The Law":

5) Echo and the Bunnymen "People Are Strange":

6) Gerard McMann's "Cry Little Sister (Theme From The Lost Boys)":

7) Eddie and the Tide "Power Play":

8) Tim Cappello "I Still Believe":

9) Mummy Calls "Beauty Has Her Way":

Again a good enough song. 10) Thomas Newman's "To The Shock of Miss Louise":

Up next a movie featuring a California love story based loosely on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet".

(Finished July 14th, 2019) The Ideal Pink Floyd Setlist, Night 1

Hello,

A great light show and intriguing videos, check. A great sound system, check. Great musicianship, check. A great tribute band, check. Finally great songs, check.

My son and I went and saw The Australian Pink Floyd Show 30th Anniversary last night. Overall I would say it's pretty good. The first song they played was the instrumental "Obscured By Clouds". They played an awful lot of music last night and only about 1/3rd of that time was there singing. All these instrumentals to a point is fine as some of their instrumental songs are some of the most iconic soundscapes to ever be recorded. But I prefer something to sing along with. The highlights of the show were "Young Lust", "Us and Them", "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2", "Time", "Wish You Were Here", "Run Like Hell" and the encore song "Comfortably Numb".

I have broke this into 4 different parts, broken into two blogs. Night 1 is the Roger Waters war songs/ Syd Barrett songs. Night 2 is their best songs not in the other 3 parts. Part 3 is the best songs from "Dark Side of the Moon" and Part 4 is the best songs "The Wall".

Part 1 The War Songs/ Syd Barrett songs:

For those wondering where "Nobody Home" is, it's coming later. But it would fit here perfectly.

"When The Tigers Broke Free":

"The Gunner's Dream":

"Southampton Dock/ The Final Cut":

"Postwar Dream":

"Wish You Were Here":

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1 to 5":

Part 2:

"Bike":

"One of These Days":

Just which one is Pink? "Have A Cigar":

"Welcome To The Machine":

"What Do You Want From Me":

"Keep Talking":

"High Hopes":

There has to be one long mostly instrumental song in the set somewhere. "Meddle":

After that long song this first night will close out with the lesser known, but still great "Not Now John":

(Started September 16th, 2018) The Best Songs of 1998: According To Rolling Stone, Part 1

Hello,

What happened in 1998, the Unabomber pleaded guilty, Bill Clinton admitted to inappropriate actions with "that woman" Monica Lewinsky. John Glenn, at the age of 77, returned to space. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa both broke the homer record set by Roger Maris, these were two of the biggest beneficiaries of the steroid scandal. That home run chase made that summer so fun and memorable. Kurt Cobain committed suicide and it was the summer of one of the worst movies ever "Titanic".

These are the best songs of 1998 according to Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield and Billboard magazine. I like Billboard's list more honestly, a lot of songs on Rolling Stone's list I don't even remember hearing. There are about 10 to 15 songs on both lists, but I expected both lists to share more of the same songs.

The Donnas "Rock and Roll Machine":

Semisonic "Closing Time":

The Spice Girls "Stop":

Savage Garden "Truly, Madly, Deeply":

Sarah McLachlan "Sweet Surrender":

Deborah Cox "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here":

Third Eye Blind "Losing A Whole Year":

Silkk The Shocker "It Ain't My Fault":

Sheryl Crow "My Favorite Mistake":

Dixie Chicks "You Were Mine":

"Once You Loved Somebody":
Saint Etienne "Lose That Girl":

Hello,

This will probably be the most graphic blog I ever write and even this won't be that graphic. But one of the best things about a great love story is physically expressing that love. Prince "Kiss":

Prince was known for his sex songs "Cream":

Marvin Gaye was the Prince of his day for sexually provocative lyrics as in this stone cold classic

Mazzy Star "Fade Into You"

Chris Isaak "Wicked Game":

Hello,

The beginnings of new love. The wonder, the feelings, the hopes, expectations and desires. The unknown, what can go wrong and what can go right. Some of the greatest songs of all-time are love songs, here's some of my favorites. I'm going to start with my favorite love song of all-time.

Does it even need an introduction? I doubt it, but I'm still going to introduce the Peter Cetera classic anyway:  1) "The Glory of Love":

2) UB40 "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You":

3) Lord Huron "The Night We Met":
4) Christopher Cross "Arthur's Theme (The Best You Can Do)":
5) REO Speedwagon "I Can't Fight This Feeling":

(Updated October 6th, 2019) Boz Scaggs Concert Review September 5th, 2018

Hello,

I saw Boz Scaggs and his very able band at Layton, Utah's Kenley Ampitheatre on September 5th, 2018. I googled around a bit, but I couldn't find any of the names of his band members. However he was accompanied by a lead guitarist, bass guitarist, a multi instrumental player, keyboards and vocals, bongos and vocals, a regular drummer and a bassist that was smiling the whole night. Also Boz Scaggs played guitar, including some great blues licks. We can't forget the guy who brought Boz his guitar between each song.

The setlist is below, he played a decent 17 song set, which lasted about 100 minutes. His set was missing some obvious gems (see below). They played some of his classics, songs he called his Hollywood songs. They also played some of his songs from his newest CD "Out of the Blues". He played a few songs from that CD, some of which are covers he played on this night.

I'm posting the best songs and live versions of his songs.

1) "Jojo":

2) "It's Over":

3) "Gone Baby Gone":

4) "Rock & Stick":

5) "Harbor Lights":

A cover of Bobby "Blue" Blands 6) "The Feeling Is Gone":

One of his better most recent songs. 7) "Radiator 110":

This song had more pizazz than expected in concert. 8) "Georgia":

This song was one of the most lethargic moments of the evening. Of all the amazing Neil Young songs, why did he cover this one? This is Young's 9) "On The Beach":

A cover of Fats Domino 10) "I'm Sick and Tired (Of Fooling Around With You":

11) I've Got Your Love (Love Love)":

12) "Look What You've Done That To Me":

I expected this song to have a bit more pizazz in concert. 13) "Lowdown":

14) "Lido Shuffle":

Encore:

15) "What Can I Say":

I loved their playing the blues, but a better songs could have been picked for that. 16) "Loan Me A Dime" was a sadly a long snooze:

A cover of Chuck Berry's 17) "You Never Can Tell":

Songs I wish Boz and his great band would have played:

"Breakdown Dead Ahead":
"Miss Sun":
"We're All Alone":
