(Finished November 30th, 2018) The Best of Sleeper Agent

Hello,

This blog is about the no longer rock band Sleeper Agent. Sometimes when I listen to my iTunes songs come play that I hadn't thought about in a long time. Sometimes one band has several songs that I had forgotten about. One of those bands is Sleeper Agent. The CD I was listening to was their 2014 CD "About Last Night". I don't remember hearing anything about them in awhile, so I went to their Wikipedia page and found out Sleeper Agent has broken up. But that they do have an earlier CD, 2011's"Celebrasion". It also has several great songs on it.

It's sad when a band seems to be on it's way breaks up. The last thing on their wikipedia page is that the lead singer, Alex Kandel, was on "The Voice" in 2015. Here's hoping to a comeback, we can never have too many great rock bands.

(Finished November 27th, 2018) All Aboard: A Look Into "Crazy Train", Part 1: The Background

Hello,

This is a deep dive into one of the greatest songs of all-time, Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Time". This isn't a technical breakdown, because I don't have that kind of knowledge. It's a fan's appreciation of that amazing song. Thanks to wikipedia for most of the biographical details in this blog.

"Crazy Train" is the first song off of Ozzy Osbourne's debut CD "Blizzard of Ozz". It's also included as a live track on 1987's "Tribute". What is "Crazy Train" about?  According to Wikipedia.org "the subject matter of the lyrics is the Cold War and the fear of annihilation that existed during this period. That was a theme he revisited on "The Ultimate Sin" with "Thank God For The Bomb" and "Killer of Giants".

Who wrote "Crazy Train"? It was written by John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne, Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley.

Some notable milestones for "Crazy Train":
- It surprisingly only reached # 49 on UK singles chart.
- It reached US # 9 Billboard Top Tracks
- Rhoads solo was rated 9th best solo by Guitar World.
- "Crazy Train" was ranked the 23rd greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.
- It's the 10th most played song on themusicaddict's iTunes.

"Tribute" was a tribute to Ozzy's guitarist Randy Rhoads, who sadly died in a reckless plane crash while on tour with Ozzy in 1982. Although Ozzy named the CD "Tribute", the relationship between Rhoads and Ozzy was strained when Rhoads died. He had been thinking of leaving of Ozzy's band for a long time. In fact Rhoads had already made the decision to leave Ozzy's band, his main concern with Ozzy was his abuse of drugs. In fact it's said the last thing Rhoads said to Ozzy was "You'll kill yourself, you know? One of these days". It's amazing that Rhoads prediction hasn't come true. Not only is Ozzy still alive, he's due to celebrate his 70th birthday on December 3rd.

While "Blizzard" is a pretty solid debut CD, "Tribute" is a pretty mediocre CD. Of course it has live versions of "Crazy Train", "I Don't Know", "Mr. Crowley", "Flying High Again" and "Iron Man".

Ozzy's band at the time of "Blizzard of Ozz":

The lyrics to "Crazy Train":

Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as fools
Maybe it's not too late
To learn how to love
And forget how to hate

Mental wounds not healing
Life's a bitter shame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

I've listened to preachers
I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts
Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role

Mental wounds still screaming
Driving me insane
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

I know that things are going wrong for me
You gotta listen to my words
Yeah
Heirs of a cold war
That's what we've become
Inheriting troubles I'm mentally numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
I'm living with something that just isn't fair

Mental wounds not healing
Who and what's to blame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

(Finished Finished Dec 25th, 2018) Led Zeppelin's 50 Best Songs To Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary, Part 1

Hello,

Sometime in August of 1968 Led Zeppelin had their first practice and thus this year is their 50th year anniversary. I was going to countdown their 50 best songs in order by quality from 50 to 1. I realized that was just too much to take on. Thus I've modified that, now I'm going to post multiple blogs that feature their 50 best songs. I now have 50 songs but it will not surprise me if I end up with 51 or 52 songs. I just wanted to honor my favorite band's anniversary in some way. Led Zeppelin released 81 songs on officially 9 albums, but "Physical Graffiti" was a double album. Not all their songs are classics, it only seems that way.

Led Zeppelin is:
Robert Plant is on volcanic vocals.
Jimmy Page is their electric, multi-talented guitarist.
John Bonham is the original hammer of the gods, their spectacularly talented drummer.
And according to legend John Paul Jones didn't sell his soul to the devil, which is why he's the least known member. But don't mistake the keyboardist and bassist as not being an incredibly crucial piece of the Led Zeppelin monolith.

I rated all of Led Zeppelin's songs using the same ratings that iTunes uses, from 0 stars through 5 stars. Some songs I only gave a half star to. By my count, Led Zeppelin has 32 5 star songs, 11 4.5 star songs, 26 4 star songs, 1 3.5 star song ("Black Country Woman") and 11 3 star songs. That adds up to 81 total songs. Combining the 5 star songs and the 4.5 star songs equals 43 songs. I selected 7 of the the 26 4 star songs to finish with 50 songs. One song year for each year of existence for the best band ever. These songs are in no particular order other than what I rated them. On this first Zep blog I'm posting the 7 4 star songs that brought the total to 50 songs.

This is an early iteration of "The Lemon Song":

The finished version of "The Lemon Song":

The Golden God himself and Jack White on "The Lemon Song":

Page, Plant, The Egyptian Ensemble and The London Metropolitan Orchestra "Friends":

"The Battle of Evermore":

Just one of the many amazing songs off the greatest CD of all-time, Led Zeppelin 4. The studio version of "The Battle of Evermore":

"Four Sticks":

"The Song Remains The Same":

"Dancing Days":

Page and Plant performing "Dancing Days" before a very adoring Dallas audience:

(Started November 22nd, 2018) Best Music From Season One of "Veronica Mars", Part 1

Hello,

I recently started watching the original "Veronica Mars" series and I've enjoyed the first few episodes. I completely missed it when it was first released and then for the longest time it wasn't available anywhere. On a whim I searched for it and it's on Xfinity's Streampix now, who even knew there was anything worthwhile to watch there? Anyway while this has been a good show, it's also a musical time capsule. It captured many of the songs that were hot at the time and also played songs from many earlier years. I recognized several songs, but thanks to tunefind.com but filling in some of the blanks.

The Dandy Warhols "We Used To Be Friends":

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five "White Lines (Don't Do It)":

Tsar "The Girl Who Wouldn't Die":

Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear The Reaper":

Bonus song: my favorite BOC song "Burning For You":

Although FOW have broken up now, there's a chance that there may be a blog exploring their best songs coming up soon. I'm a a big FOW fan. Fountains of Wayne "Troubled Times":

Carlos Santana featuring Everlast "Put Your Lights On":

Damone "Now Is The Time":

The Postal Service "Such Great Heights":

Bonus song: That song reminds me of this song Death Cab For Cutie's "We Looked Like Giants":

The Stills "Still In Love":

America "Ventura Highway":

Spoon "Don't Let It Get":
Social Distortion "Angels Sing":
The Beatles "Birthday":
Blondie "One Way Or Another":

(Finished November 22nd, 2018) Eisley's "Room Noises": One of the Most Under Appreciated CDs Ever

Happy Thanksgiving,

I went out on my normal morning walk and a song by Eisley played. They probably are a band that relatively few people have heard of, which I think is a shame. If you're a "Star Wars" fan, you probably recognize the name of Eisley. The full name of the city is Mos Eisley and as Obi-Wan Kenobi said of that city it's a "wretched hive of scum and villainy".

But Eisley has no scum or villainy in it's music, their music is full of happiness and joy. Their first CD is the pure sugar rush of sweet melodies and harmonies. That 2005 CD "Room Noises" has some of the most pleasant to the ear songs ever created.

That CD didn't really break them into the national scene, in fact I'm not even sure how I found out about Eisley. Since the amazing "Room Noises", the career of Eisley has meandered. There have been four more CDs and a few personnel changes along the way. Their most recent CD, 2017's "I'm Only Dreaming" seems to be more of a return to the form that made "Room Noises" so great. I was pleasantly surprised with "Dreaming" while listening to it this morning. Although after a thorough lesson I can only give that CD an A grade. It's not a good thing that the CD was released 18 months ago and the first I'm hearing of it was in my research today.

Eisley's website, eisley.com, is barely functioning. The first thing one sees when going to that website is advertising for that CD that was released 18 months ago. They have a mailing list and a store, which I expect doesn't get much business. They do have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. But their Instagram's last post was early September, 2018. They don't even make the effort to post a Happy Thanksgiving wish?

Well if nothing else happens for them we'll always have the sublime joys of "Room Noises" to enjoy.

According to Wikipedia.org:

Current members
Current touring musicians
  • Elle Puckett – guitar (2015-present)
  • Remington DuPree – drums (2015-present)
  • Jedidiah Lachmann – keyboards (2015-present)
Former members
  • Jonathan Wilson – bass (2001-2005)
  • Chauntelle D'Agostino — lead guitar, vocals (1997-2015)
  • Stacy King — vocals, keyboards (1997-2015)
  • Weston DuPree – drums (1997-2015)

"Room Noises":
1) "Memories":

2) "Telescope Eyes":

3) "I Wasn't Prepared":

4) "Golly Sandra":

5) "Marvelous Things":

6) "Brightly Wound":

7) "Lost At Sea":

8) "My Lovely":

9) "Just Like We Do":

10) "Plenty of Paper":

11) "One Day I Slowly Floated Away":

12) "Trolley Wood":

Eisley does have other cool songs besides what's on "Room Noises", these are a few of those songs.

"Always Wrong":

"A Song For The Birds":

Definitely not one of their best songs, just wanted to give a bit of context of what their newer music sounds like. "Defeatist":

I think this is a really cool song. "Smarter":

"The Valley":

(Started November 21, 2018) An Intro To Muse Part 3: Muse Live

Hello,

I'm working through the music of Muse's 4 most recent CDs so that I can blog about the best songs from each CD. That will be the fourth and fifth parts of my Muse blog series. I'm listening to all their songs in prep to see them in Salt Lake City on February 28th, 2018. This is Muse's setlist from Zeppelinfeld, Nuremberg, Germany on June 3rd, 2018. Muse usually only plays between 16 and 18 songs and I thought might be because their songs are longer than most bands. But this show is 18 songs and only 86 minutes, that's very disappointing. (Thanks to setlist.fm for the below setlist.)

Here's the actual entire concert:

I don't know if I'm going to go through and add videos for each song as I usually do.

1) "Thought Contagion":
2) "[Drill Sargent]/ Psycho"
3) Interlude
4) "Hysteria" (AC/DC's "Back In Black" and RATM's "Know Your Enemy" outro riffs)
5) "Plug In Baby":
6) "The 2nd Law: Isolated System":
7) "Dig Down":
8) "Unclosed Desires":
9) "Supermassive Black Hole ("Close Encounters" intro riff):
10) "Stockholm Syndrome" ("Reapers" intro riff & "Reapers" outro riff)
11) "The 2nd Law: Unsustainable":
12) "Madness":
13) "Starlight":
14) "Time Is Running Out":
15) "Mercy":

16) "Take A Bow":

(Finished August 9th, 2020) Songs Rocking My iPod

Hello,

I started working on this blog in November 2018. As I have time I'm trying to finish blogs I only have started, but not finished.

These are the last 17 songs that played on my iPod- yes I still use an iPod. I listen to those songs on  shuffle, thus these songs are in no particular order.

Both of these songs come from Skillet's amazing 2016 CD, "Unleashed". It was one of the best CDs of that year even though it didn't get much attention. Skillet is such an underrated band.
1) Skillet "Undefeated":

A bonus Skillet song, "Resistance":

This, the Knuckle Puck song and the Interrupters songs I discovered because of the 2018 Vans Warped Tour 2018 Compilation. 2) Dead Girls Academy "I'll Find A Way":

3) Them Damn Crows "Blink of an Eye":

4) Rihanna "Good Girl Gone Bad":

A band I didn't know any thing about until this year and now they are one of my favorite newer bands. The Interrupters have so many great songs. 5) The Interrupters "She Got Arrested":

My first real rock concert was these gentlemen on the "For Those About About To Rock" tour.
6) AC/DC "Hells Bells":

A band that I just saw for the first time this past summer and they were my favorite concert of 2018. 7) Night Ranger "Four In The Morning":

8) Ozzy Osbourne "Crazy Train":

I'm so disappointed this play in Salt Lake was postponed, I was really looking forward to seeing it at the end of November. Maybe 2019? Maybe 2020? Maybe 2021. 9) "Good Girls Go To Heaven (Broadway Version)":

Bonus song Pandora's Box "Good Girls Go To Heaven":

10) Stone Broken "Worth Fighting For":

11) Cat Stevens "Peace Train":

12) Al Stewart "Time Passages":

13) Black Stone Cherry "White Trash Millionaire":

14) Knuckle Puck "Double Helix":

15) Catfish and the Bottleman "Outside":

16) Band of Skulls "I Know What I Am":

17) Expose "Come Go With Me":

(Finished November 18th, 2018) Who Is Lauren Daigle? Her Introduction Continued Part 2

Hello,

I hadn't planned to make this a two part blog, but I kept on finding more great Lauren Daigle songs and who wouldn't want to hear more of her amazing voice?

From 2018's "Look Up Child":

"Rescue":

"This Girl":

"You Say":

"Love Like This":

"Losing My Religion":

"Remember":

"Look Up Child":

From 2016's "Behold: A Christmas Celebration":

"What Child Is This":

"Light of the World":

"O Holy Night":

"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas":

"O Come O Come Emmanuel":

"Little Drummer Boy":

And on her tour, along with her previously released songs, she's been singing:

Her new song "Tremble":

I had to check out her version of this song and it's pretty good. Covers of Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke":

Daigle's cover of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" isn't on YouTube yet so I went with the original by the Queen of Soul:

(Finished November 18th, 2018) Who Is Lauren Daigle Introduction and Should Non-Religious People Listen To Her Music? Part 1

Hello,

Lauren Daigle first gained my attention when I heard her amazing song, "Still Rolling Stones". It's a great song. But just who is Lauren Daigle? She's an "American contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter from Lafayette, Louisiana" according to bing.com. She is married and as of now has no children.

She currently is on tour and is taking a Christmas break starting December 17th. That night she has a hometown show in Lafayette at the Heymann Center. She resumes her tour about 5 weeks later at legendary Carnegie Hall. Her current CD is 2018's "Look Up Child" was her first single from that CD. "Look Up Child" was the #3 CD on it's debut week on Billboard's Top 200 album chart. It had 115,000 copies sold, which is a pretty good debut for anyone. But even more spectacular for a Christian singer. Obviously she's reaching fans beyond her Christian music base and with amazing songs like "Still Rolling Stones" I can see why. In what seems to be a natural fit for a Christian artist, she released her first Christmas CD on October 21, 2016. It is "Behold: A Christmas Celebration".

In an interview with Billboard's Jim Asker she was asked a question about singing about Christian themes. She responded with this answer "I don't shy away from singing about my faith. I think it conveys honesty, and people see authenticity. More people are going to relate to my music if it's sincere. I believe that wholeheartedly. That's how you reach people that might not have felt that [the Christian genre] was their home before. I want this to be such a record of joy, such a record of hope, that people experience a childlikeness again. In the time of making this record, I had to remember who I was as a child. I want people to reflect on, 'The innocence of my childhood ... how do I see myself through those eyes again? How do I love myself like that again? Where's that joy? Where's that hope?"

Should non-religious people listen to her music? I would say a very ardent "yes". She's a Christian singer, but she sings about a lot of different things. She doesn't shove her religion down anyone's throat, but isn't shy about expressing how she feels. Both of those things can be possible and are with Miss Daigle. Other reasons why people should listen to her is she has a lot of amazing songs and a very beautiful voice.

Here are several of her songs:

With Needtobreathe "Hard Love":

From 2015's "How Can It Be":

I love her voice on this performance "First":

"Trust In You":

"How Can It Be":

"Here's My Heart":

"O' Lord":

"I Am Yours":

"Come Alive (Dry Bones)":

"Once and For All":

(Started November 17th, 2018) What's Going On With Nine Inch Nails?

Hello,

I was reviewing a setlist of hottest tours currently going on now. Ed Sheeran, who I wrote about recently, and Taylor Swift were both mentioned. I've already seen Miss Swift in concert and she was decent. I would really love to see Ed Sheeran in concert, but I don't know when he'll be making it to Salt Lake again. He has no concerts scheduled, as of now, for North America in 2018 and 2019. Although after August, 2019 he has no more scheduled concerts.

Another name that came up was Nine Inch Nails, although I'm not sure they, he are still relevant. I decided to check out his latest music and tour. His most recent CD is 2018's "The Bad Witch" and it's exactly what you would expect. It's not terrible, it's not amazing, it's just a band that continues to reap diminishing returns. The music hasn't changed a lot, it's a lot of the same angsty music. Someone has even made a mock Nine Inch Nails that sounds a lot like a Nine Inch Nails song "This Is A Trent Reznor Song":

Also Nine Inch Nails are still touring, they're currently on tour until December 15th. They close this leg in Los Angeles. In a bit of an odd tour mate, they are touring with The Jesus and Mary Chain. I'm all for odd pairings though. Although I'm sure a lot of people are like me when they think "I haven't thought of The Jesus and Mary Chain for a long time."

They are remaining active, I'm just not sure how big their cultural footprint is any more. And with sage CDs like "Bad Witch", I just don't know if they'll be able to recover that. And that's okay, it happens to a lot of bands. Even if they never make any more great CDs, we'll always have "Pretty Hate Machine". The following is a recent setlist from their current tour.

1) "Now I'm Nothing"/ 2) "Terrible Lie":

3) "Last":

4) "Letting You":

5) "March of the Pigs":

6) "Sanctified":

7) "1,000,000":

8) "Ahead of Ourselves":

9) "Closer":

The next two songs are David Bowie covers:
10) "I Can't Give Everything Away":

11) "Subterraneans":

12) "The Perfect Drug":

13) "Sin":

14) "Gave Up":

15) "The Big Comedown":
16) "Starf****)":
17) "Wish":
18) "Head Like A Hole":

Encore:
19) "Shit Mirror":
20) "Even Deeper":
21) "Hurt":

(Finished November 15th, 2018) Carrie Underwood Live!!! (featuring Maddie and Tae and Runaway June) Part 1

Hello,

I'm not a huge country music fan, but there are a few artists that I quite like. One of those is the lovely Miss Carrie Underwood. I'm seriously thinking about going and seeing her the next time she's in town on Saturday, September 14th, 2019.

The two opening acts are below:
Runaway June "I Can Buy My Own Drinks":

Even I, who doesn't follow country music that closely, has heard this song, "Girl In A Country Song":

"Friends Don't":

"Fly":

"After The Storm Blows Through":

She'll be on her Cry Pretty tour, which officially starts May 1st, 2019. The CD "Cry Pretty" was released September 14th, 2018 and it's a very good CD. I thought I would go back and look at her setlist from the last time she visited the great state of Utah. That was November 28th, 2017 at the Maverick Center. The following setlist comes from setlist.fm.

1) "Renegrade Runaway":

2) "Last Name/Somethin' Bad":

3) "Undo It":
