(Finished February 29th, 2024) Part 1 of The Best Songs of 1974

Hello,

Now that we have survived to 2024, I want to go back 60 years and review the best songs for every 10 years up to today. I started with 1954, I only have one blog for that year as I know so few songs. I took a brief look at 1944 and I only knew a few songs. However not enough songs to post a blog about that year. To me the best thing that happened in 1944 was D-Day.

Each decade moving forward I know more songs from that decade. I know a lot more songs from 1964 than 1954 for instance. It will probably peak with 1984, one of the greatest years of music ever. Then 1994 I know a lot of songs, but 2004, 2014 and 2024 I know less songs each year.

The biggest musical stars of 1974 were Bad Company, Queen, John Lennon, Wings, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Olivia Newton-John and Elton John.

1) Chicago "(I've Been) Searchin' For So Long":

2) Bad Company "Ready For Love":

3) Gordon Lightfoot "Sundown":

4) Billy Preston "Nothing From Nothing":

5) Rufus and Chaka Kahn "Tell Me Something Good":

6) Abba "Waterloo":

7) Kiss "Strutter":

1974 had two of the sappiest songs of any era, although both are classics. This one is sad, but there are a lot of memories that come with regrets. 8) Happy Chapin "Cat's In The Cradle":

Appearing with Elton John in concert. 9) John Lennon "Whatever Gets You Through The Night":

I'm reading Marlon James "A Brief History of Seven Killings". It's a fictional Jamaican reggae singer simply called The Singer. However the author isn't trying to hide that the fictional singer is none other than the great Bob Marley. I've only read about the first 60 pages but so far I would suggest it to my fellow music lovers. 10) Bob Marley and the Wailers "No Woman No Cry":

11) Bachman-Turner Overdrive "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet":

12) Queen "Killer Queen":

13) Linda Ronstadt "You're No Good":

14) Steely Dan "Rikki Don't Lose That Number":

This song is sad, but it's not as sappy as "Seasons In The Sun" and "Cat's In The Cradle". It's one of the greatest songs of all-time. What a master course in how to sing a song near perfectly. 15) Barbra Streisand "The Way We Were":

1974 had two of the sappiest songs of any era, although both are classics. This one is sad, but there are a lot of good memories. 16) Terry Jacks "Seasons In The Sun":

17) Paperlate "The Night Chicago Died":

(Updated February 28th, 2024) Part 3 for The Top 100ish Pop Punk Songs

Hello,

I'm going to try and rank these into my Top 100ish Pop Punk songs of all-time. We'll see how that goes. I realize I don't have the time to do that but I'll try to have at least 100 of the best Pop Punk songs. What is Pop Punk, it's a genre of music that provides both the best of pop and punk in the same song. In other words its poppy songs that rock. At least that's my definition. Now people are going to disagree with my definition of Pop Punk and that's perfectly fine. Either enjoy this blog, make your own blog or do both.

35) Jimmy Eat World "The Middle":

36) The Interrupters "Got Each Other":

37) All American Rejects "Swing Swing":

38) Metro Station "Where's My Angel":

(Updated February 26th, 2024) The Coolest Band Names of Up and Coming Rock Bands: Their Names Are Cool, But Are They Any Good?

Hello,

My two favorite bands below are Phantom Party and The Wrecks. All of these bands have some good songs but I suggest you really check out the two above bands. When I refer to song plays, those are the plays on YouTube Music.

The Accidentals are aight, but they aren't a rock band at all. I'm looking for great up and coming rock bands. 1a) "What A Waste":

1b) "Wildfire":

1c) "Night Train":

This is my favorite of all of The Accidental songs that I have played. "I'm a switchblade renegade.....". Their plays range from 641 plays ("Nightlife") to "Michigan and Again" (630k plays). 1d) "Earthbound":

2a) Air Traffic Controller "Hurry Hurry":

2b) "The House":

2c) "Ferocious":

With a name like that they have to be a rock band. Their decent but don't quite live up to that magnificent name. Their number of song plays range from 71 (a live version of "The Saint") to 1.5k plays ("The Friend"). 3a) Boom Said Thunder "Honey":

3b) "The Friend":

3c) "The Uncalm":

These guys seem like they haven't released any music in a few years. On YouTube music their songs range anywhere from one play ("Charlie") to 1.8k plays ("Tunnel of Love"). My first impression I'm quite liking their jangly and upbeat rock music. I could see me really liking this band- but they are really far away from breaking out in America. 4a) Phantom Party "Catholic School":

4b) "Sunflower Eyes" (Beach Cult Version)":

4c) "Tunnel of Love":

"Let's find out where the real monsters are." 4d) "Selma":

Ringo Deathstarr is definitely one of the coolest names for an up and coming band. They're another band that I don't know that I would call rock, but they have some good songs. Their songs range from 560 listens (a live version of "Never") to 429,000 plays ("Kaleidoscope") 5) Ringo Deathstarr

5a) "Kaleidoscope":

5b) "Stare At The Sun":

5c) "Guilt":

Surf Rock Is Dead- yes, that's their name, not a commentary on surf rock. At least I don't think it is. Their song plays range from 765 plays ("Fitting The Mold") to 199,000 plays (for "As If)".

6a) "Miss You":
6b) "As If":
6c) "Anymore":
6d) "In Between":

The Wrecks song plays range from to "Favorite Liar" (6.5 million plays) to a live version of "Four" (242 plays). 7a) "Favorite Liar":
7b) "This Life I Have":
7c) "Lifestyle":
7d) "Sonder":
7e) "I Love This Part":
7f) "Psycho Killer":

Hello,

Another Greatest Songs of All-Time issued from on high by Rolling Stone magazine. I love that magazine and have been a subscriber since the early 80s. I accept that people have different tastes in music and that's the way it should be, but. Just as fervently as I agree with some of their choices I also disagree with some of their choices. Currently I'm working on my Actual Greatest Songs of All-Time and honorable mentions. There are just some songs that I can't not include in the Greatest Songs of All-Time. I started with 100 Greatest Songs of All-Time. That has inched up to several hundred songs and will continue to rise. For this blog I'm going to focus on the actual Greatest Songs Of All Time.

These lists are very fluid. Most of these songs could have also been in my All-Time Top 100 if only I had thought of them earlier. There are probably at least 700 songs that will always be in my GSOAT.

There are the greatest songs of all-time- as determined by themusicaddict. This is locked in stone and will not change, of course I'm lying. These blogs will be constantly changing as I remember songs, discover new songs, discover old songs, fall out of love with songs, fall in love with songs etc. And the number by the song is no way my personal ranking for that song, it's just a way to help me keep this organized.

154) Alanis Morissette "You Oughta Know":

155) Mary Chapin Carpenter  with some special guests "He Thinks He'll Keep Her":

(Finished February 11th, 2024) Part 7 of The Best Songs of 1977

Hello,

The last blog I did in this series was several months ago, it's time to do another one. I still need to read that book mentioned below.

This blog is mostly inspired by a book I saw a couple of years ago at Target. I loved the title of the book, which is "I Heard It In A Love Song". That of course reminded me of the classic Marshall Tucker Band song. I needed to hear that song again, then I took it further and decided to build a series of blogs around it. I'm focusing on 1977, it was an amazing year for music.

I spent more time than I should have to made sure all of these songs were released in 1977. If I am wrong on any it is my fault. I was trying to keep these songs in alphabetical order and I was pretty close.

103) Marshall Tucker Band "I Heard It In A Love Song":

104) Dave Mason "We Just Disagree":

105) Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. "You Don't Have To Be A Star":

106) Ronnie McDowell "The King Is Gone":

It seems Meco saw the original "Star Wars" several times over its opening weekend. He was so inspired by it that he made a disco version of the theme. He took two of the most popular things of 1977 and joined them together for a pretty cool song. 107) Meco "Star Wars Theme":

108) The Steve Miller Band "Fly Like An Eagle":

109) Ronnie Milsap "It Was Almost Like A Song":

110) Ronnie Milsap "What A Difference You Made In My Life":

111) Walter Murphy "A Fifth of Beethoven":

112) Kenny Nolan "I Like Dreaming":

113) Alan O'Day "Undercover Angel":

114) Ronnie McDowell "I Love You, I Love You, I Love You":

115) Pablo Cruise "Whatcha Gonna Do":

116) Dolly Parton "Here You Come Again":

117) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "American Girl":

Originally released in 1976, this song was re-released in 1977. 118) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Breakdown":

Although 1977 was a great year for music, sadly the world lost one of it's most popular singers. He was known by many names, but most people usually only use one name for him. They either call him Elvis or (The) King. His death was so momentous that even a dumb 10 year old kid like myself heard and paid attention to his way too early death.  119) Elvis Presley "Pledging My Love":

A song that I've always loved about a sport I've always loved. Go Dodgers!! Please sign Shohei Ohtani. And the Dodgers did. And Spring Training starts this weekend. I'm so excited for the 2024 MLB season. Also my 49ers play in the Super Bowl on Sunday!! 120) John Fogerty "Centerfield":

Socially conscious and message songs that are amazing:
"This song is not a rebel song, this song is 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'"121) U2 "Sunday Bloody Sunday":

122) U2 "Bullet The Blue Sky":

123) John Mellencamp "Rain On The Scarecrow":

(Finished February 3rd, 2024) The Best Songs of 1983-1986, Part 11: Songs 182-198

Hello,

This blog is inspired by Season 3 of "Cobra Kai", it takes me back to "The Karate Kid". That was an extremely fertile time in music, the years of 1983-1986. These are the best of the best songs for those four years. So many of these songs are from 80s movies. The first two blogs in this series have a lot of songs from movies. The other blogs also have movie related songs. I can't remember how many music videos were just basically clips of the movie that song was from. With such great 80s music and movies it was a great time to grow up.

What CDs, songs, soundtrack etc. were being released these 4 years? These were the years of "Thriller", "Purple Rain" (best soundtrack ever), "Footloose", "Pretty In Pink" (not only a great movie, but a great soundtrack that really captures the music of it's time). Also this was the era of New Wave, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Def Leppard from getting their foot into the door to when they became the biggest band in the world, "We Are The World", Live Aid, "Karate Kid" and it's great music, Also only of the funkiest CDs ever produced, David Bowie's "Let's Dance", CDs started replacing albums and cassettes as the most popular way to listen to music

Number one overall songs of 1983) The Police "Every Breath You Take", 1984) Prince "When Doves Cry", 1985) Wham! "Careless Whisper" and 1986) "That's What Friends Are For":

Number one overall albums of 1983 and 1984) Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Yes it was a monster. 1985) Bruce Springsteen "Born In The U.S.A.", 1986) Whitney Houston self-titled.

Top overall country songs of each year according to playback.fm. 1983) Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers "Island In the Stream" 1984) Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson "To All The Girls I've Loved Before" 1985) Kenny Rogers "Morning Desire"- since I barely heard this song back in the day, I doubt this really was the 1985 #1 country song and from playlistresearch.com 1986) The Judds "Grandpa (Tell Me About The Good Old Days".

Top overall soul songs of 1983, I'm getting these songs from: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/goldwax317/1983__the_top_100_randb_singles/

1983) Michael Jackson "Billie Jean" 1984) Prince "When Doves Cry" 1985) Freddie Jackson "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Time's Sake) 1986) Gregory Abbott "Shake You Down".

There are currently documentaries out there about one of the biggest moments of this four year era. It's called "The Greatest Night In Pop", it's about the recording of "We Are The World". Also a documentary about the preeminent 80s rap band RUN-D.M.C. "Kings From Queens: The RUN-D.M.C.". Not only that but Jam Master Jay is also in the news, two people are finally being held accountable for his death. I've yet to watch either of these documentaries.

Many times I just want to go back and listen to the amazing music of the 80s, thanks for coming along.

182) The Talking Heads "Burning Down The House":

183) Bryan Adams "Somebody":

184) The Talking Heads "Stay Up Late":

185) Anita Baker "Caught Up In The Rapture":

186) The Violent Femmes "Kiss Off":

187) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band "Dancing In The Dark":

Hello,

Now that we have survived to 2024, I want to go back 60 years and review the best songs for every 10 years up to today. I started with 1954, I only have one blog for that year as I know so few songs. I took a brief look at 1944 and I only knew a few songs. To me the best thing that happened in 1944 was D-Day.

Each decade moving forward I know more songs from that decade. I know a lot more songs from 1964 than 1954 for instance. It will probably peak with 1984, one of the greatest years of music ever.

The biggest musical stars of 1964 were the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and The Dave Clark Five.

1) The Beach Boys "Fun Fun Fun":

2) Terry Stafford "Suspicion":

3) The Beatles "All My Loving":

4) Barbra Streisand and Louis Armstrong "Hello Dolly":

5) Mary Wells "My Guy":

6) Al Hirt "Java":

7) The Drifters "Under The Boardwalk":

8) Jan and Dean "Dead Man's Curve":

9) Dionne Warwick "Walk On By":

Absolutely 100% one of the best songs of the time. The whole song is amazing and Eric Burdon's delivery is so good. 10) The Animals "House of the Rising Sun":

11) Chad and Jeremy "A Summer Song":

12) Rip Chords "Hey Little Cobra":

What a fun song. 13) Roger Miller "Chug-A-Lug":

14) The Shangri-las "Leader of The Pack":

15) The Temptations "The Way You Do The Things You Do":

16) "The Trashmen Surfin' Bird":

17) The Searchers "Love Potion #9":
