(Started August 28th, 2020) A Tribute To Chadwick Boseman

Hello,

A very sad story breaking tonight is the death of Chadwick Boseman. After 4 years of fighting colon cancer Boseman died tonight. I wasn't aware that he was sick even, so his sudden death tonight came as quite a shock tonight. Also 57 years ago this day Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have A Dream". Although very sad it seems fitting that the man that once played Jackie Robinson died on the anniversary of "I Have A Dream" speech.

R.I.P. Chadwick

(Finished August 27th, 2020) The Top 5 Songs + #100 Ranked Song Every Year I've Been Alive Part Eight: 1985: Expanded Edition, Part 8

Hello,

These are the greatest songs of 1985 of all genres. I spent a few hours today finding these songs from all genres. 1985 was a pretty big year for me, it was the year that I graduated from Woods Cross High School. Wildcats!! I also worked at Safeways at that time. Then that Fall I left home for the first time to go to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. I think I might still be on academic probation at what now is Brigham Young-Idaho. That's okay as I eventually graduated from the University of Utah in 1997. My first brush of college honestly was a struggle for me. I somehow survived and it eventually turned out to be a great experience for me. It was a time for firsts for me.

Now here are the greatest songs of 1985. If a song was released as a single I went with that year as the release date. Some of these songs were released on a CD in 1984, but weren't released as a single until 1985. I counted those as a song from 1985. Those songs with a number are where that song ended on the Year End Chart of 1985. These songs are in alphabetical order by artist. If a song from 1984 charts high enough in 1985 that it's ranked in the Top 100 I will include that as a 1985 song.

9) Madonna "Crazy For You":

98) Madonna "Dress You Up":

2) Madonna "Like A Virgin":

58) Madonna "Material Girl":

Barbara Mandrell "Angel In Your Arms":

I somehow missed this song back in the day, which is amazing how much music I've listened to over the years. This song is pretty much my entire knowledge of this band. Marillion "Kayleigh":

63) The Mary Jane Girls "In My House":

Reba McEntire "Somebody Should Leave":

Ronnie McDowell "In A New York Minute":

Mel McDaniels "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On":

Mel McDaniels "Let It Roll (Let It Rock)":

Mel McDaniels "Stand Up":

John Cougar Mellencamp "Lonely Ol' Night":

John Cougar Mellencamp "Rain On The Scarecrow":

John Cougar Mellencamp "R.O.C.K. In The USA":

John Cougar Mellencamp "Small Town":

Although these blogs are focusing on 1981-1985, I will include videos from before if they were also memorable. Now almost 40 years later on this hot summer day imagine this is that long ago hot summer day and enjoy....

Although this song was released in 1979 it also was the first video played on MTV so I'm counting it for purposes of this blog. 1) The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star":

Great musician, great song but not a very memorable video. 2) Pat Benatar "You Better Run":

3) The Who "You Better You Bet":

4) The Pretenders "Brass In Pocket":

5) REO Speedwagon "Take It On The Run":

11) Rod Stewart "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy":

12) Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street":

13) Styx "Best of Times":

This is a video I hadn't seen until working on this blog. This song is a cool song, but it's a bit of a hidden gem. 14) Tom Johnston "Savannah Nights":

15) Blotto "I Wanna Be A Lifeguard":

16) REO Speedwagon "Don't Let Him Go":

17) Juice Newton "Angel of the Morning":

From my research April Wine didn't have any official videos at all. But they had at least three great songs. "I Like To Rock" looks like a official video though.
18) April Wine "Sign of the Gypsy Queen":

19) Saga "On The Loose":

This is such a great song. Since videos were fairly new people were still learning how to make videos. This video isn't a great video. 20) Michael Stanley Band "He Can't Love You":

(Finished August 18th, 2020) Some of the Best Ska Songs Ever

Hello,

I'm pretty sure that I've never done a Ska blog before. I wanted to first write a New Wave blog, but I have written that blog before. In no way would I consider myself an expert on Ska music- or any kind of music for that matter. But I really am not an expert on Ska music, which is why I got most of these songs from various websites.

Other than possibly Reel Big Fish's sell out I don't know that I like a Ska song more than this one.
1) The Mighty Mighty Bosstones "The Impression I Get":

2) Madness "One Step Beyond":

3) Sublime "Wrong Way":

4) No Doubt "Sunday Morning":

5) Reel Big Fish "Sell Out":

6) Save Ferris "Come On Eileen":

7) The Mighty Mighty Bosstones "Where'd You Go":

8) Operation Ivy "Sound System":

9) The Specials"A Message To Rudy":

(Finished August 17th, 2020) The Ten Best Musicians of the 80s, Part 7: Happy Birthday Madonna, Part 2

Happy Birthday to one of my all-time favorite 80s babes,

I was chilling on YouTube when I stumbled across a Prince concert, which reminds me of how great of a musician, singer, performer and songwriter etc he was. (Let's be honest, he wasn't a very good actor.) I was inspired to write a series of blogs about the Top Ten musicians of the 80s. But I wanted to rely on someone else's Top Ten, so I Googled my way around the internet. One list had The Beastie Boys as #1, another list had Kenny Rogers as #1- um, no and no. Don't get me wrong I love both of those artists, but neither are even close to #1. I came across a udiscovermusic.com blog about The Top Ten Superstars of the 80s. I may have a few quibbles with their Top Ten, but overall it's a pretty solid list.

Other musicians that should be considered for any Top Ten 80s musicians include RUN-D.M.C., Def Leppard, U2, George Michael, R.E.M., Duran Duran (or as the kids called them back in the day Duran squared), Journey, Tina Turner, Van Halen, Ozzy, The Boss and a few others.

Here, in no particular order, is udiscovermusic.com's Top 10 80s artists. It should be obvious which musicians are the ones I like the most. Yes, Madonna is one of those musicians. She had a mix of fire, beauty and that overwhelming musicianship. She also picked great songs or had people help pick great songs for her. Great talent with great songs made her one of the Top Ten 80s musicians. And let's not forget how good she was at marketing her brand.

These are Madonna's best songs of the 80s:

17) "Jimmy Jimmy":

Yet another one of my favorite Madonna songs. 18) "Who's That Girl":

19) "Causing A Commotion":

20) "Like A Prayer":

21) "Express Yourself":

22) "Till Death Do Us Part":

23) "Promise To Try":

24) "Oh Father":

25) Keep It Together":

featuring Jellybean Benitez 26) "Sidewalk Talk":

featuring Prince 27) "Love Song":

28) "Burning Up":

29) "Borderline":

30) "Cherish":

31) "Angel":

32) "Dear Jessie":

Here, in no particular order, is udiscovermusic.com's Top 10 80s artists. It should be obvious which musicians are the ones I like the most. Yes, Madonna is one of those musicians. She had a mix of fire, beauty and that overwhelming musicianship. She also picked great songs or had people help pick great songs for her. Great talent with great songs made her one of the Top Ten 80s musicians. And let's not forget how good she was at marketing her brand.
