(Finished October 31st, 2022) Part 4 of The Best of 1982 Pop Culture

Hello,

Music Television (MTV) debuted on August 1st, 1981. Bands such as Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Billy Idol, Men At Work, Queen, Michael Jackson and eventually many other bands used the new format to break into prominence.

From inthe80s.com and mainly mrpopculture.com these are some of the biggest pop culture moments of that year. 1982 (and 1983) was the year of "Thriller", "E.T.", the debut of the Late Show With David Letterman, "Blade Runner", "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan", "First Blood", "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", the hilarious "48 Hours", the heartbreaking "Sophie's Choice", Pink Floyd "The Wall", "Tron" and others. Remember many of these movies might look dated now, but back in 1982 this was cutting edge technology. I actually watched "Wrath of Khan" with my youngest son today. It's a bit dated, but it was still pretty good.

Some of the best/ intriguing books of 1982 included Alice Walker's "The Color Purple", Stephen King's "The Gunslinger" (first of his classic "Dark Tower" series), Thomas Keneally's "Schindler's List", Ken Follet's "The Man From St. Petersburg", Jean Auel's "The Valley of Horses", James Michener's "Space"and  Kurt Vonnegut's "Deadeye Dick".

Best Broadways plays of 1982 included "Cats", "84 Charing Cross Road", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" and "Torch Song Trilogy".

(Finished October 30th, 2022) Part 8 of Great Songs That Didn't Chart In The American Top 40

Hello,

These are mainly 80s songs that are great but never made the Top 40. I was and you'll be shocked by some of these songs. These are some amazing songs. As the foundation for this series of blogs I'm going to start off with a two part huffpost article. From there I'll be finding songs on my own. There are likely dozens, if not more, amazing songs that never made the Top 40. I get the song peak info from wikipedia.org most of those rankings come from Billboard. The didn't chart at all meant the song didn't even make the Top 100. Otherwise the number in parenthesis is the songs peak on the Billboard Hot 100 in America.

Songs 122 to 130 are all by U2.  This is yet another amazing U2 song, 122) "Red Hill Mining Town" that was never released:

123) "Bullet The Blue Sky" was never released as a single:

124) "In God's Country" (#44):

125) "Trip Through Your Wires" also was never released as a single:

126) "The Fly" peaked at #61:

127) "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" peaked at #52:

128) "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" never charted:

One of U2's better latter day songs. 129) "The Blackout", though it deserved too, never charted:

130) Highwaymen "Highwayman" (#1 country song, but didn't chart on Billboard's Hot 100):

131) This is such a haunting song. Mazzy Star "Fade Into You" (#44):

Songs 132 to 136 are all by Swedish duo Roxette 132) "How Do You Do" (peaked at #58):

133) "Sleeping In My Car" (peaked at # 50):

134) "Crash! Boom! Bang!" (it never charted on the Billboard Hot 100):

135) "Wish I Could Fly" (it never charted on the Billboard Hot 100):

136) "Stars" (it never charted on the Billboard Hot 100):

137) The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" (This song peaked at #40):

138) Fountains of Wayne "Mexican Wine" (It didn't ever reach Billboard's Hot 100):

(Finished October 29th, 2022) Part 7 of Great Songs That Didn't Chart In The American Top 40

Hello,

These are mainly 80s songs that are great but never made the Top 40. I was and you'll be shocked by some of these songs. These are some amazing songs. As the foundation for this series of blogs I'm going to start off with a two part huffpost article. From there I'll be finding songs on my own. The didn't chart at all meant the song didn't even make the Top 100. Otherwise the number in parenthesis is the songs peak on the Billboard Hot 100 in America.

Obviously "Purple Rain" is the greatest soundtrack of all-time, but Prince's soundtrack to 1989's "Batman" was also amazing. Some of these songs were released as singles, for instance

Songs 106 to 115 are all by the legendary Prince. 106) "Scandalous", but it never charted:

While the rest of these songs are amazing, none of them were ever released as singles. 107) "Baby I'm A Star":

Why am I including this song. It's because it's amazing, every song on "Purple Rain" is amazing. 108) "Computer Blue":

These next three Prince songs weren't even released as singles 109) "Trust":

110) "Vicki Waiting":

111) "Electric Chair":

112) New Power Generation" went to # 64:

113) "Baltimore" was unranked:

114) "Hardrocklover", one of Prince's all-time best songs, never charted:

115) "Cinnamon Girl" was unranked:

Songs 116 to 121 are all by Irish rockers U2. 116) U2 "I Will Follow" was never ranked:

117a) "New Year's Day" (#53):

117b) Bonus video: U2 "New Year's Eve" (Live)":

118) "Two Hearts Beat As One":

Hard to believe that 119) "Sunday Bloody Sunday" never made the charts:

120) featuring B.B. King "When Love Comes To Town" (#68):

121) "All I Want Is You" (#83):

(Finished October 29th, 2022) Part 6 of Great Songs That Didn't Chart In The American Top 40

The most amazing thing about Skid Row on the charts is that they had two top ten hits at all, that's not something typical for most rock bands. Def Leppard who is still around has only had for Top Ten hits. Skid Row's "18 and Life" went to #4 and "I Will Remember You" went to #6.
86) Skid Row "Youth Gone Wild" (#99):

87) Skid Row "Sweet Little Sister" (Wasn't even released at the single. With the lyrical content that makes sense.):

88) Skid Row "Monkey Business" (Didn't chart at all.):

89) Skid Row "Slave To The Grind" (Didn't chart at all.):

90) Skid Row "Wasted Time" (#88)

91) Skid Row "In A Darkened Room" (Didn't chart at all.):

A complete change of pace here, going from Skid Row to Yello. This song wasn't a big hit, but it is a great offbeat song and has been in a lot of movies. 92) Yello "Oh Yeah" (#51):

The bad girl of 80s pop, 93) Miss Samantha Fox "Do Ya Do Ya (Wanna Please Me)" (#87):

94) Samantha Fox "Hold On Tight" (Didn't chart at all.)

95) Samantha Fox "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now" (#80):

96) Samantha Fox "I Surrender To The Spirit of The Night" (Didn't chart at all)":

97) Samantha Fox "Love House" (Didn't chart at all.):

Only the amazing "Nothing Compares 2 U" went to America's Top 40, but at least that went to #1. "Emperor's New Clothes" went to # 60, but none of her other songs even made the Top 100. She's one of those artists that many would consider a one hit wonder, however she has several amazing songs. Sinead O'Connor from her amazing CDs "The Lion and the Cobra" and "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". Except "Emperor's New Clothes" none of these songs made it on to the Top 100 at all.
Songs 98 to 99 are all by the incomparable vocalist Sinead O'Connor 98) "Mandinka":

99) "Jackie"

100) "Troy":
101) "Just Like You Said It Would B":
102) "I Want Your Hands On Me":
103) "Emperor's New Clothes" (#60)
104) "Black Boys On Mopeds":
105) "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance":

(Finished October 22nd, 2022) Part 5 of The Best Songs of 1968 to 1970

Hello,

I watched another episode of the Apple TV "For All Mankind" series tonight. It's set in the late 60s-early 70s and some of the songs from that era just so good. I wanted to trip the light fantastic on this series of blogs from the best songs of those years.

In some ways those songs seem so innocent, but hiding a darker truth underneath. It feels like there's a big societal change coming. That darker undercurrent was seen with the student protests of Vietnam, the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots and the chaos at the Altamont Rolling Stones concert. But also we had the mostly peaceful Woodstock concert and of course the moon landings, which seemed to bring Americans together. It certainly was an interesting time. What a great time for music!!

(Finished October 22nd, 2022) Part 6 of Best 80sish Obscure Songs

Hello,

Sometimes I start blogs, but don't label what blog series that is. Eventually I go back and try to figure that out. I have no idea what this blog is about, other than probably best songs of the 80s. Other than this being an 80s blog I can't figure out any other unifying theme.

There's a blog elsewhere that this is part 3 of, but I don't know where it is. It's out there somewhere and I'm too lazy to find it so I'm moving on from here. I was starting to think this was obscure songs from the 80s, except that I have one of the most famous 80s songs here in these blogs. Everyone knows Journey's "Don't Stop Believing". And everyone should know Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen". I'm just going to call these the Best 80s Obscure Songs Series of blogs.

If you are looking for the first two parts of this blog series they don't exist.
