(Finished October 3rd, 2022) Part 3 of The Best of 1982 Pop Culture

Hello,

Music Television (MTV) debuted on August 1st, 1981. Bands such as Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Billy Idol, Men At Work, Queen, Michael Jackson and eventually many other bands used the new format to break into prominence.

From inthe80s.com and mainly mrpopculture.com these are some of the biggest pop culture moments of that year. 1982 (and 1983) was the year of "Thriller", "E.T.", the debut of the Late Show With David Letterman, "Blade Runner", "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan", "First Blood", "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", the hilarious "48 Hours", the heartbreaking "Sophie's Choice", Pink Floyd "The Wall", "Tron" and others. Remember many of these movies might look dated now, but back in 1982 this was cutting edge technology. I actually watched "Wrath of Khan" with my youngest son today. It's a bit dated, but it was still pretty good.

Some of the best/ intriguing books of 1982 included Alice Walker's "The Color Purple", Stephen King's "The Gunslinger" (first of his classic "Dark Tower" series), Thomas Keneally's "Schindler's List", Ken Follet's "The Man From St. Petersburg", Jean Auel's "The Valley of Horses", James Michener's "Space"and  Kurt Vonnegut's "Deadeye Dick".

Best Broadways plays of 1982 included "Cats", "84 Charing Cross Road", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" and "Torch Song Trilogy".

The 12ish best movies of 1982 and when appropriate music from those movies.

1) "E.T.":

Neil Diamond "Heartlight":

The Clubber Lang "Rocky",  2) "Rocky 3":

Rocky had to get the eye of the tiger to defeat Clubber Lang. Survivor "The Eye of the Tiger":

I didn't like this movie when I first saw it and it hadn't aged well by the second time I watched it. But what a ballad!! 3)"An Officer and A Gentleman":

In my opinion the song is better than the movie, Joe Cocker and Maureen McGovern "Up Where We Belong":

This was in in the incredibly bizarre "Breakfast at Tiffanys", but also in "An Officer and a Gentleman":

The 80s were the decade of movies for horny teenage boys, "Porky's" was the creme de la creme of that genre. And by best of the best I mean best of the worst.  4) "Porky's":

Watched this movie with my son the other day. It's very dated, but still a very solid film.
5) "Star Trek 2: "The Wrath of Khan":

6) "Firefox":

7) "The World According To Garp":

Oh I loathe this movie so much. The trailer makes it look like such a good movie, but it's a bore. No desire to see the sequel. 8) "Blade Runner":

I don't know if I like Spicoli or Mr. Hand better. Along with Porky's two of the horniest movies of the 80s. 9) "Fast Times At Ridgemont High":

Jackson Browne "Somebody's Baby":

This was when Eddie Murphy was at or near his peak. This is a great and hilarious movie, but they shouldn't have made the sequel. 10) "48 Hours":

11) Night Shift

Marshall Crenshaw "Someday, Someway":

12) "Missing":

"Missing" Main Theme:

13) "Pink Floyd: The Wall":

"Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2":

"When The Tigers Broke Free":

"Young Lust":

"Comfortably Numb":

"In The Flesh/ Run Like Hell"/Waiting For The Worms":

14) "The Last American Virgin":

This video may have one of the saddest endings ever, ah the unpredictability of young love- or any love. But what a great song, an incredibly beautiful song!! James Ingram "Just Once":

The Police "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da":

Gleaming Spires "Are You Ready For The Sex Girls":

The Cars "Since You're Gone":

The Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like":
