(Finished October 31st, 2023) The Top 17 Songs 35 Years Ago, October 29th, 1988

Hello,

Most of the following information comes from this website: https://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1988.html

What was 1988 known for? 1988 Summer Olympics were held in Seoul, Korea. The Winter Olympics were held in Calgary, Canada. This was when both Olympic Games were held in the same year. The Soviet army withdraws from Afghanistan, a country known as the graveyard of empires. Hopefully that will serve as a sign for Russia eventually pulling out of Ukraine. The Space Shuttle program resumes 2.5 years after the Challenger disaster.

Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" is published. That's a book that I have told myself that I'm going to read multiple times but have yet to get around to it. Other great books of 1988: Thomas Harris' "The Silence of the Lambs", Anne Rice "Queen of The Damned", H.G. Bissinger's "Friday Night Lights", and Dean Koontz's "Lightning". If I remember correctly that was the first Dean Koontz book I read and I loved it. Other popular books included Robert Fulghum's "All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten", James Michener's "Alaska" and Taylor Branch's "Parting The Waters".

Great movies of 1988: The original "Die Hard", "Rain Man", "Big":"Twins", "Eight Men Out", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Coming to America", "Mystic Pizza" and "A Fish Called Wanda".

17) Breathe "How Can I Fall":

(Finished October 30th, 2023) The Top 17 Songs 30 Years Ago, October 29th, 1993

Hello,

1993 was turbulent, it was the first time terrorists hit the World Trade Center. It was also the year of the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas. Also Pablo Escobar was killed by Colombian special forces. River Phoenix died outside of The Viper Room with drug induced heart failure.

For much more information than below go to the website: https://popculturemadness.com/1993-trivia-fun-facts-and-history/

Bill Clinton started his first term as President. Some of the quotes were The X Files "The Truth Is Out There" and California Milk Processor Board's Got Milk?

Movies include "Schindler's List"- a great and heartbreaking novel and movie. Also the Velociraptors of "Jurassic Park" invaded local movie theatres. The movie was decent, but the book is so much better. Also we enjoyed the cute couple of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in "Sleepless In Seattle".

The above website listed a couple of books, but neither one were interesting to me. I have come up with my own list: Tom Clancy's "Without Remorse", Margaret Atwood's "The Robber Bride" (a great, great book), "Lasher" the second of Anne Rice's "The Mayfair Witches" trilogy, Tony Kushner's "Angels In America" and a whole bunch of books I'm not interested in.

17) 2Pac "I Get Around":

16) Inner Circle "Sweat (A La La La La Long)":

15) Aerosmith "Cryin":

14) Def Leppard "Two Steps Behind":

Hello,

Ah 1983, good times. themusicaddict enters high school and MTV is in full motion. Those two things are connected but only tangentially. Many a hour I spent in front of an old beater TV watching MTV.

The following comes from: https://hobbylark.com/party-games/1983-Fun-Facts-and-Trivia

Other notable events of 1983: Sally Ride became the first woman in space, Thistle, Utah was destroyed by a big landslide, the unemployment rate was 8.0%- about 3 times higher than it is now- the Washington Redskins- yes, Redskins- won the Super Bowl and the Orioles won the World Series. Other items of note: More than 10 million computers were being used and the first version of Microsoft Word was released- how antiquated would that look now?

Also the tv series MASH ended on a very subdued note. Companies such as CostCo, Sam's Club and Verizon Communications all were started. 1983 was the year of two Stephen King books "Christine" and "Pet Semetary". "Christine" was the book that got me to fall in love with the writing of Stephen King, I have read about 80% of his books. "Flashdance" taught the world to dance and "A Christmas Story" made us rethink the word "fragile".

17) Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack "Tonight I Celebrate My Love":

16) David Bowie "Modern Love":

15) Stevie Nicks "If Anyone Falls":

14) Quiet Riot "Cum On Feel The Noize":

(Finished October 28th, 2023) The Top 17 Songs from March 15th, 2003

Hello,

How many of these songs will I be familiar with? This chart is a very interesting mix of hip hop/ soul and country music. Off the top of my head I know five of the seventeen songs. I wasn't a big fan of the music of the 2000s until Lady Gaga broke out at the end of the decade.

I have no regrets that I never heard this "classic" until today. Hopefully this will be the last time I ever hear this "song". 17) 50 Cent "Wanksta":

16) JAY-Z featuring Pharrell "Excuse Me Miss":

Eminem is terrible, this is one of the dumbest songs ever. This is the musical equivalent of lowest common denominator. 15) Eminem featuring Dina Rae "Superman":

14) 3 Doors Down "When I'm Gone":

13) Tyrese "How You Gonna Act Like That":

12) Christina Aguilera "Beautiful":

Will someone one please remind me what P. Diddy is calling himself now days. Wait a minute, never mind I just don't care. 11) B2K and P. Diddy "Bump Bump Bump":

10) Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock "Picture":

9) Avril Lavigne "I'm With You":

I literally have never heard of this song. 8) Missy Elliott "Gossip Folks":

One amazing band covering the classic of another amazing band, Fleetwood Mac. 7) The Chicks "Landslide":

6) R. Kelly "Ignition":

5) Justin Timberlake "Cry Me A River":

4) Aaliyah "Miss You":

I like the parts where Ashanti sang, but the the rest of the song is terrible. This really was a hit in 2003? 3) Ja Rule featuring Ashanti "Mesmerize":

(Finished October 27th, 2023) Part 2 of The Greatness and Greatest Hits of Arcade Fire

Hello,

I have no idea how Arcade Fire isn't one of the biggest bands in the world, they have so many amazing songs. Arcade Fire's first full length CD "Funeral" is easily one of the best CDs from the last several years. Currently they're working on their latest CD, "We". It was released on May 6th, 2022.

It's finally time for part 2 of this series, part 1 was published about seventeen months ago.

My favorite Arcade FIre song. 17) "Sprawl 2 (Mountains Beyond Mountains)":

(Finished October 26th, 2023) Part 12 of Apple's Top 200 Most Streamed 80s Song: 3 to 1

Hello,

Holy hell I'm in an 80s mood. After seeing David Bowie and Depeche Mode tribute bands and the actual Love and Rockets I've heard a lot of great 80s music live this year. Later this year I'll be seeing the Lost 80s tour which feature bands such as Wang Chung, General Public, Naked Eyes and others. And tonight I'll be seeing Duran Duran, Nile Rodgers and Chic and Bastille. With all that going on I'll be doing an 80s blog, but I desperately wanted to do something different than I've done before.  Thus I Googled for the best selling 80s songs of all-time.

I normally would go to Billboard for this kind of thing, however I didn't want to pay for access for that. I continued Googling and came across a list of the most streamed 80s songs on Apple Music. For some reason there are only 199 songs on their Top 200, that gives me the option to provide my own song at #200. There are some very unusual songs on this list, including songs I've never heard of. But that's why I wanted a list like that to force me to include songs that I don't usually share.

Well here's the last of this long going blog series. Not only am I adding a video for each of the Top Ten songs, I'll be also adding videos for other songs by each band. Enjoy the greatest decade of music ever. Again this is Apple Music's Top 200 80s songs, not themusicaddict's Top Ten 80s songs. I think trying to figure out my Top Ten 80s song would be a no win task. Also even if I did figure it out I think it would be constantly changing.

The next seven 80s songs are by Queen. 3) "Another One Bites The Dust":

"Play The Game":

"Flash":

"One Vision":

"Body Language":

Without this song would there have been Vanilla Ice? Under Pressure":

"Radio Gaga":

"Hammer To Fall":

The next nine 80s songs are by the Queen, Whitney Houston. I loved all eras of Whitney Houston, but the 80s was the best. 2)  "I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me":

"You Give Good Love":

"All At Once":

"Saving All Of My Love For You":

"Didn't We Almost Have It All":

"Greatest Love Of All":

"Do You Hear What I Hear":

"How Will I Know":

"So Emotional":

Apple's most streamed 80s song and these other five 80s songs are all by Toto. 1) "Africa":

"Rosanna":

"I Won't Hold You Back":

"Stranger In Town":

"Pamela":

"I'll Be Over You":

10) AC/DC "Back In Black":

Another great song from the classic AC/DC CD "Back In Black". "Hells Bells":

Not to be a snob, but I'm going to be a snob. This is the tenth or eleventh best song on "Appetite For Destruction". That truly is one of the greatest debut, greatest rock and all-time greatest albums of all-time. 9) Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine":

Now here's the best song on the CD "Mr. Brownstone":

The second best song from "Appetite":

Another great song from G N' R's classic debut CD "Nightrain":

8) a-ha "Take On Me":

a-ha were given the opportunity to do a Bond, James Bond song. Their Bond entry isn't well known but it's a pretty good song. Their not so classic "The Living Daylights":

Being a snob again but this is about my tenth favorite Journey song. Journey is one of my favorite 80s bands, but they were never as good after Steve Perry left the band. I was able to see the Journey Escape tour, that was an amazing concert. These next five songs are by Journey. 7) "Don't Stop Believin":

"Anyway You Want It":

featuring a Jonathan Cain piano solo "Who's Crying Now":

"Send Her My Love":

"I'll Be Alright Without You":

Like "Escape" and "Back In Black" "Slippery When Wet" was also a classic CD. Their follow up CD "New Jersey" is also a very good CD. I don't know how I still remember this but it was also the first CD I ever bought. The next six songs are by Bon Jovi. 6) "Livin On A Prayer":

"Wanted Dead or Alive":

"Never Say Goodbye":

"I'll Be There For You":

"On The Edge of A Broken Heart":

"Blood On Blood":

Speaking of classic CDs most people consider Jackson's "Thriller" the best CD of the 80s. It indeed has several amazing songs on it, there is not a dud on the whole CD. 5) Michael Jackson "Billie Jean":

"Smooth Criminal":

Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie "We Are The World":

4) Fleetwood Mac "Everywhere":

These next four songs are all amazing 80s Fleetwood Mac tracks. "Gypsy":

"Little Lies":

"Hold Me":

"Big Love":

(Finished October 22nd, 2023) Part 5 of The Best Country Songs of the 2000s

Hello,

The best decade for country music, in terms of popularity, was probably the 90s. Country music absolutely exploded that decade. However Country music still has maintained a fair level of popularity in the last 23 years. Songs continue to break out. Lady A's "Need You Now" broke out in a big way. As did "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X. Then of course that song that has been driving much talk of late is Jason Aldean's "Try That In A Small Town". That's a song I still haven't listened to and have little desire to.

Other country songs that have broken out since 2000 include Little Big Town's "Girl Crush", Tim McGraw's "Red Ragtop", multiple songs by Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road". More songs that have broken out coming out later.

69) Brad Paisley "The World":

(Finished October 21st, 2023) Part 5 of The Best of 90s Rock: 69-85

Hello,

What is the 90s known for? The 90s is known for the rise of the Internet, "Saved By The Bell"- which of course means Tiffani Amber-Thiessen. The 90s is also known for Grunge, which means Seattle and flannel and darker themed music. Speaking of Grunge that would mean "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Evenflow", "Rusty Cage" and "Rooster".

Other things the 90s are known for one of the best albums of all-time, Metallica's "The Black Album". It's so good they released a 4 disc remake of it performed by other singers. Other great things about the 90s include Blockbusters- so many great memories about getting videos there. I know that seems ridiculous now in the age of on demand.

Also OJ Simpson's White Bronco, slap bracelets (they were a bit addictive), The Macarena, "The Bodyguard" and the power of Whitney Houston's voice, colorful iMacs, Weezer's the so-called blue album, one of the dumbest fads of all-time- beanie babies-

Alanis Morissette, "You Oughta Know" and "swallow it down jagged little pill". I remember when that CD was breaking, what a breath of fresh air that CD was. I know it wasn't her first CD, but for all intents and purposes it was. Also one of the best albums of the 90s.

Other things continued Aqua's "Barbie Girl"- from another one of the best albums of the 90s, "Fava beans and a nice Chianti", so much nervousness about Y2k- which was so incredibly anti-climactic.

Finally No Doubt, "as if", "psyche", yet another great first CD- "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill", "Saving Private Ryan", "Independence Day" (although it has not aged well at all) and "Jurassic Park". If you loved the "Jurassic Park" movie you'll really love Michael Crichton's novel. Other great novels Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes", Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander", Tracy Chevalier's "The Girl With The Pearl Earring", Michael Ondaatje's "The English Patient"- one of the few times the movie is better than the book, Richard Preston's "The Hot Zone", Margaret Atwood's brilliant "The Robber Bride", Zadie Smith's "White Teeth", Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air", Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation" and so many others.

This video has nothing to do with the song, but it's the only Bryan Adams thing I can find. 69) Bryan Adams "Not Guilty":

70) Alice In Chains "Man In The Box":

71) Beastie Boys "So What'cha Want":

(Finished October 17th, 2023) Part 11 of The Best of the First Eleven Years of This Century: 2000-2010

Hello,

Ah the 2000s, a decade known for 9/11, the 2008 financial crash, 2003's Iraq War, a tsunami that killed over 230,000 people. There was a growing awareness of climate change, which continues to escalate.

While there were some bad things those 11 years there were also a lot of great things. Things such as Harry Potter, "The Davinci Code" (opinions may vary),

It was also the time that included Clint Eastwood's masterful "Million Dollar Baby" and that amazing performance by Hillary Swank. Also that was the year of "The Dark Knight" and "King Kong".

Obviously some of the songs of the decade are below. Some of the best CDs of that timeframe are Alicia Keys "Songs In A Minor", Ryan Adams "Gold", The New Pornographers "Electric Version", Sufjan Stevens "Illinois", Franz Ferdinand's self-titled CD, U2's "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb", Death Cab For Cutie's "Transatlanticism", Arctic Monkeys' "Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not", Green Day's masterclass "American Idiot", The White Stripes "White Blood Cells", Bruce Springsteen's best CD "The Rising" (you heard me), U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind", Arcade Fire's "Funeral" and The Strokes "This Is It". Expect to see several songs from the above CDs on here.

And yes I know 2000-2010 is actually 11 years, it's okay and just enjoy the music. For those of you who think my 102 songs for the 2000s is too limiting these blogs have a lot more songs for your enjoyment.

(Finished October 14th, 2023) Part 10 of The Best of the First Eleven Years of This Century: 2000-2010
