(Finished December 31st, 2023) Part 26 of themusicaddict's Actual Greatest Songs Of All-Time

Hello,

Happy New Year!!

Another Greatest Songs of All-Time issued from on high by Rolling Stone magazine. I love that magazine and have been a subscriber since the early 80s. I accept that people have different tastes in music and that's the way it should be, but. Just as fervently as I agree with some of their choices I also disagree with some of their choices. Currently I'm working on my Actual Greatest Songs of All-Time and honorable mentions. There are just some songs that I can't not include in the Greatest Songs of All-Time. I started with 100 Greatest Songs of All-Time. That has inched up to several hundred songs and will continue to rise. For this blog I'm going to focus on the actual Greatest Songs Of All Time.

These lists are very fluid. Most of these songs could have also been in my All-Time Top 100 if only I had thought of them earlier. There are probably at least 700 songs that will always be in my GSOAT.

There are the greatest songs of all-time- as determined by themusicaddict. This is locked in stone and will not change, of course I'm lying. These blogs will be constantly changing as I remember songs, discover new songs, discover old songs, fall out of love with songs, fall in love with songs etc. And the number by the song is no way my personal ranking for that song, it's just a way to help me keep this organized.

(Finished December 26th, 2023) Part 2 of themusicaddict's Best Christmas Songs

Hello,

I was originally going to try and rank these songs in order of awesomeness and limit the number of songs I would have on these blogs. I quickly realized that neither option was realistic. There are just so many great Christmas songs. I'll try and split these songs equally between two blogs. These songs are in no particular order.

And no The Counting Crows "A Long December" is not a Christmas song! That's the equivalent of saying Guns N' Roses "November Rain" is a Veteran's Day song.

15) Chris Tomlin featuring All Sons and Daughters "What Child Is This":

16) John Mellencamp "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus":

17) TSO "The Lost Christmas Eve":

18) Band Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas":

19) Thurl Ravenscroft "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch":

20) Michael Crawford "Mary Did You Know":

21) Royal Choral Society "The Hallelujah Chorus":

So many great Christmas songs, but this is probably my favorite. 22) The original version of "Carol of the Bells":

23) TSO "Wizards In Winter":

25) "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy":

(Finished December 17th, 2023) Part 5 of The Best Songs of 1977

Hello,

The last blog I did in this series was over two years ago, time to do another one. I still need to read that book mentioned below.

This blog is mostly inspired by a book I saw a couple of years ago at Target. I loved the title of the book, which is "I Heard It In A Love Song". That of course reminded me of the classic Marshall Tucker Band song. I needed to hear that song again, then I took it further and decided to build a series of blogs around it. I'm focusing on 1977, it was an amazing year for music.

I spent more time than I should have to made sure all of these songs were released in 1977. If I am wrong on any it is my fault. I was trying to keep these songs in alphabetical order and I was pretty close, except for songs here.

Fleetwood Mac made listening to music fun. 69) Fleetwood Mac "You Make Loving Fun":

Foreigner released their self-titled debut CD in 1977. It featured such classics "Cold As Ice", "Long Long Way From Home" and 70) "Feels Like The First Time":

71) Foreigner "Cold As Ice":

72) Foreigner "Long Long Way From Home":

73) David Gates "Goodbye Girl":

74) Crystal Gayle "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue":

75) Crystal Gayle "I'll Do It All Over Again":

Andy Gibb's two best years were likely 1977 and 1978. Sadly 10 years after this amazing two year run he died at way two young of age. He had just barely turned 30. 76) Andy Gibb "I Just Want To Be Your Everything":

77) Andy Gibb (Love Is) Thicker Than Water":

78) Hall and Oates "Rich Girl":

79) Merle Haggard "From Graceland To The Promiseland":

80) Merle Haggard "If We're Not Back In Love By Monday":

81) Merle Haggard "Ramblin' Fever":

82) Hot "Angels In Your Arms":

83) Thelma Houston "Don't Leave Me This Way":

84) Waylon Jennings an Willie Nelson "Luckenbach, Texas":

(Started December 13th, 2023) Part 3 of Great 80s Songs You Haven't Thought About In Awhile, If Ever

Hello,

I just can't get away from doing 80s music blogs, to me that was the greatest decade for music ever. These are songs that you haven't thought about for awhile or maybe never have thought about. My aim here is great songs that aren't completely forgotten but just haven't got the love they so deserve. I'm trying not to include completely obscure songs here.

I'm trying to post songs, even if they were a big hit back in the day, that seem to have been forgotten. For instance I was watching an episode of "Suits" last night. Harvey Specter and Mike Ross were discussing the great band The Spinners. They were a band that had a lot of great songs, but some people would give you a blank look if you mention their name. In fact Mike Ross was not familiar with the Spinners. I'll be posting one of their songs later.

What I'm trying to do is to post great songs, but not those songs that most sentient beings should know. In other words I won't have Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", Huey Lewis and The News" The Power of Love", Madonna's "Like A Virgin", George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" or "Faith" etc. In other words I want to post the 80% of songs that fit in between the obscure and the songs that most people should know. Most folks my age will be familiar with many of these songs. Great decade, great times, great music and a great life.

35) Olivia Newton-John "Twist of Fate":

36) Peter Gabriel "Big Time":

37) The Fixx "Red Skies":

38) AC/DC "Who Made Who":

39) Dead or Alive "Brand New Lover":

40) Fiction Factory "(Feels Like) Heaven":

Three old school bangers for you. 41) MARRS "Pump Up The Volume":

42) Technotronic "Pump Up The Jam":

It was released on January 3rd, 1990. That means everything about this song is an 80s song but the release date. 43) Snap! "The Power":

44) Huey Lewis and the News "Hip To Be Square":

45) ELO "Twilight":

46) AC/DC "You Shook Me All Night Long":

47) Soft Cell "Tainted Love":

48) John Lennon "(Just Like) Starting Over":

49) Joe Jackson "Steppin Out":

50) Madonna "Vogue":

51) Suzanne Vega featuring Joe Jackson "Left of Center":

19) The Alan Parsons Project "Time":

20) Billy Idol "White Wedding":

21) George Michael "Monkey":

22) The Spinners "Cupid/"I've Loved You For A Long Time":

This may tend towards being obscure. 23) The Deele "Two Occasions":

24) Manfred Mann Earth Band "Runner":

25) Pretty Poison "Catch Me I'm Falling":

26) Stacey Q "We Connect":

Obscure probably not for the former Beatle, but also not as well known as he should be. 27) George Harrison "When We Were Fab":

28) After The Fire "Der Kommissar":

29) Skyy "Call Me":

30) Bang Tango "Someone Like You":

If you were the singer for the greatest rock band of all-time, Led Zeppelin, can your solo music be obscure. I'm not sure and Plant had a lot of great songs as a solo artist. 31) Robert Plant "In The Mood":

The original slightly more lively version:

32) Oingo Boingo "Weird Science":

Even when she recently died I don't know that this early career single received any more attention. That's too bad as it's a great song. 33) Sinead O'Connor featuring MC Lyte "I Want Your Hands On Me":

34) Rush "The Spirit of Radio":

(Finished December 11th, 2023) Part 5 of The Best of New Wave

 Hello,

It's again about time to relive that great time of the early to mid 80s of New Wave music. New Wave is a genre that has quirky people, quairly lyrics and quirky music. It doesn't work all the time, but when it work at it's best the songs are great.

What exactly is/was New Wave music? Two things New Wave typically is energetic and fun. Part of the appeal is that New Wave never took itself too seriously. The lyrics weren't serious and weren't meant to be taken seriously. New Wave is basically just fun upbeat music to dance to. Who were some of the best New Wave musicians? The Thompson Twins, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Howard Jones and many others have to be considered the best New Wave bands.

You may see this and wonder why I didn't include U2 and The Police- both of who many lumped in with the New Wave movement. However both bands, especially The Police, feel like old fashioned rock bands to me. Other bands that were lumped in with New Wave, that I don't really consider New Wave, include The Talking Heads, Men At Work, Elvis Costello, The Go-Go's, The Eurythmics  and David Bowie. Duran Duran was lumped in with the New Wave crowd and I'm not sure they are truly a New Wave band. Of course this is all subjective and I will leave your determinations to yourself.

69) The Thompson Twins "King For A Day":

70) Tin Tin "Kiss Me":

71) The Thompson Twins "Lay Your Hands On Me":

72) Suzanne Vega "Left of Center":

73) Heaven 17 "Let Me Go":

74) The Thompson Twins "Lies":

74) Dream Academy "Life In A Northern Town":

75) Echo and the Bunnymen "Lips Like Sugar":

76) The Human League "Love Action (I Believe In Love)":

77) The Psychedelic Furs "Love My Way":

78) The Thompson Twins "Love On Your Side":

79) Haircut 100 "Love Plus One":

80) Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart":

81) Fun Boy Three "Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum":

(Started December 8th, 2023) The Entire Led Zeppelin's Fifteenth To Last Concert

Hello,

On August 11th, 1979 Led Zeppelin played at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, England. Led Zeppelin also played at Knebworth one week before. Little did anyone know that Zeppelin would only play 14 more shows after Knebworth 1979, Part 2. By "Led Zeppelin" I mean all four original members John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. On September 25th, 1980 John Bonham died after drinking himself to death. What many expected happened officially on December 4th, 1980. Thus ending the greatest band of all-time. Led Zeppelin said in a press statement "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend, and the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were." They signed it Led Zeppelin.

If available I will use a song from the August 4th or August 11th Knebworth show. If a song isn't available I will find another live performance of that song.

Here's the entire concert:

1) "The Song Remains The Same":

2) "Celebration Day":

3) "Black Dog":

4) "Nobody's Fault But Mine":

5) "Over The Hills and Far Away":

6) "Misty Mountain Hop":

7) "Since I've Been Loving You":

8) "No Quarter":

9) "Hot Dog":
10) "The Rain Song":

This song peaked at #4 and finished the end of year charts at #65. I was afraid the song hadn't done that well. This song is a banger before that term was created. 1) James Brown "Living In America":
