Escaping from "Alcatraz", Where is Peyton Going?

Last night I watched two episodes from "Alcatraz" last night. The first episode "The Ames Brothers" was frightfully boring. It was easily the worst hour in the short history of "Alcatraz". It didn't help that I had to watch it on Fox's On Demand. On Demand is usually one of my favorite things about modern day TV. However Fox's On Demand is the worst On Demand from any station. Most On Demand episodes only last about 50 minutes, with 10 minutes of commercials. However greedy Fox shows the program in the usual hour long broadcast TV block. That means all 20 minutes of commercials. They also make it frustrating to fast forward, I quickly realized it's better to endure the commercials. For the purpose of entertainment, especially with this episode, that is horrible. Those 20 minutes of commercials added to the realization of how thin the story was.

The second episode, "Sonny Burnett" was a little better. But the less they focus on the prisoners and the more they focus on the characters the better.

I loved "Lost" as much as the next person, but this show is too "Lostian". That's not helped by having Jorge Garcia in the cast, he's a constant reminder of the superiority of "Lost". There are also so many more great characters in "Lost". There's not one fantastic character in "Alcatraz". Quite simply theres no Kate, Sawyer, Jack or Locke. It's a hard balance to meet the right number of characters. Alcatraz needs a break out character. But having too many main characters can also be a curse. "Lost" started to lose it's mojo when it had so many characters and they tried to find things for all of them to do. I realize that's a tricky balance to have. Too many characters is currently hurting two of my favorite shows. Both "The Walking Dead" and "Blue Bloods" needs to lose a couple of extraneous characters.

In one of tonight's episodes an inmate uses dynamite to blow open a door. That reminded me of Locke blowing the door off the first hatch on "Lost". This show needs to distance itself more from "Lost". Even the end credits with the "Bad Robot" snippet isn't doing "Alcatraz" any favors. I also get that prison life is brutal, but that's not very entertaining. I wish the show would spend more time developing the story and mystery about where the inmates went for 49 years. Like "Lost" we watch for the mystery, more than for the lives of both confined populations.

It seems "Alcatraz" is struggling in ratings, chances don't seem good that this show will be coming back. Even if it did I'm on the verge of giving up on this show anyway. There are just too many dead spots in this show.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, 12 teams have reached out to Peyton Manning's representatives. It will be interesting where he ends up going. Among the places he's rumored to be considering include Miami, the Jets, Seattle and Denver. I'd love to see him end up in Denver, barring injury that's nearly a guaranteed way to end the misery of Tebow hysteria. Manning says he wants to stay in the AFC, Denver would work for that. Also Broncos Coach John Fox changed Denver's offense to take full advantage of Tebow's "skills". By doing that Denver had a surprisingly good season. Imagine what the Broncos could do if they built their offense around the tenacious, pro style abilities of Manning. He plans to announce which team he's going to join in about a week.

Also one week from today the greatest sporting event of the year starts, March Madness. I don't consider  the games that are played on Tuesday to be that interesting. Yes it's time for March Madness! It's my favorite three sport weeks of the year. I especially love the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament, those two days feature exciting and hard fought basketball played all day both days.

I had the video of the most famous song from "Chess" yesterday. This is probably the next most famous song. Not only because it's from the play, but also because Whitney Houston covered it on her second CD. For some reason this song has spawned a lot of parodies on youtube, stay away the one purporting to feature Susan Boyle.

Wow there's a lot of crappy versions of "I Know Him So Well" on the internets, I was hoping to find a version from the play. However there's something to be said for a sexy woman that can sing. This is one of the best versions I could find:



I like this version as well, although I wish both singers would have sung it with more pizzazz. This song should be sung with more passion, but it grew on me after awhile. I've listened to this version of the song several times.

Life Lessons learned from "Smash", Carrie Underwood, Why won't Youtube let me post videos?

Here are some of the life lessons that were learned last night from the excellent show "Smash".

1) Don't smoke marijuana in a public place, let alone Central Park. But if you make sure you have rich friends that can get you out.

2) Don't make out with someone that isn't your spouse, especially in front of your own home. Oh Julia how dumb are you? You were so right when you were resisting Michael's obvious flirtation. I'm usually disappointed when characters make bad choices, especially bad moral choices. Again it's even worse they do it front of their own home. It will be interesting to see how Leo plays his Mom's indiscretion to his own advantage.

3) Don't play with fire metaphorically. Tom warned Julia and she tried to listen and follow. Michael finally wore her down with "A Song For You". Really of all the millions of love songs ever in the world, that's the one he chose. Really he wouldn't sing "I Can't Fight This Feeling" or Air Supply's "Here I Am" or a million others? In reality, that was probably the song that "Smash" could procure the rights too.

4) Katharine McPhee, Karen Cartwright, is a big time hottie. I'm guessing when she first auditioned for "American Idol" all those years ago, she never imagined that she would be stripping on broadcast TV. McPhee is a spectacularly gorgeous woman. Although I thought it was a great scene when Karen Cartwright used her sexuality, but later regretted it. She felt a bit like Marilyn Monroe after doing so.

Last night's episode of "Smash" was okay. Although is anyone caring whether Dev becomes the new press secretary? Is anyone else getting tired of the Jerry-Elaine battle? That's a storyline that needs to get much more interesting or going away.

Speaking of incredibly sexy former "American Idol" contestants, have you seen the hot new cover of the new Carrie Underwood CD? The name of the CD is "Blown Away" and it will be released on May 1st. The picture is so hot that I needed to have it on my blog twice. Enjoy:

"American Idol" has now turned into a self parody and is a shadow of it's former self. However I will always be thankful for all the amazing people this show has brought to my attention. Not only the two mentioned above, but also Kelly Clarkson, Megan Joy, Daughtry, David Cook, Jordin Sparks, Crystal Bowersox, Haley Reinhart and so many others. In a spirit of good feeling I won't mention all the lame-0s that it would have been better if they remained in obscurity.

Today the Colts announced that they will be parting ways with Peyton Manning. That makes today a bittersweet day in the NFL. After 14 years with the Colts Peyton will probably be playing football for another team next year, I'm being positive in hopes he will still play. It seems like Peyton is truly a class individual and has represented his team, the NFL and his family appropriately. As a Cowboys fan I'd love to see him end up in Dallas. I don't know how many chances Jerry Jones is going to give to Tony Romo to be the man. But he has been given more than enough to show that he'll never do it. He hasn't done it yet, so why does anyone think he can do it now? Just a couple of relevant numbers. Peyton has as many Super Bowl rings as Tony Romo has playoff wins: 1. Manning has 4 times as many MVP awards as Romo has playoff wins.

Don't worry Jerry Jones I don't really expect you to make this move, or to attempt to sign pass rusher Mario Williams. As usual you prefer to maintain the status quo in an attempt to show how great your previous moves have been. Sarcasm alert: For instance, the brilliant signing of Wade Phillips. Almost everyone can see how bad your moves are, except for you. How many allies and yes men do you have remaining Jerry? I do realize you are the owner and you can do anything you want, but it seems you would want your team to win. Jerry, I know you are amazing at making money. But people will only remember you for how many Super Bowl titless your team won. Yes, the Cowboys have won 3 Super Bowls with you as owner. But as this team continues to miss the playoffs year after year, those 3 titles show more about the genius of Jimmy Johnson, not Jerry Jones. And after making the playoffs only once in the last 4 years, look for the tarnish to continue to come off of the Cowboys star.

Sorry I didn't mean to turn this into an anti Jerry Jones rant. I'm just so tired of all his terrible moves and yet he still continues to make personnel decisions.

I just want to wish Peyton Manning the best of luck in his future career. I hope he has a few more good years left in the NFL. I also hope that he can return close to the level of play that has made him such a legend. He's a guaranteed Hall of Famer and there would be no shame if he chooses to retire now. Do not retire Peyton and please remain in the AFC. Dallas already has enough challenges without facing Peyton Manning more. Whatever you do Peyton please don't go to the Redskins. That would make two winnable games for the Cowboys, much less winnable.

And after mocking the Pirates for their horrendous trade for the terrible AJ Burnett, I feel I need to give them love for signing Andrew McCutchen to an extension. If the Pirates are going to challenge for the NL Central title, McCutchen is going to need to be the man. He had a solid year last year, but needs to continue to improve even more over the next few seasons. I'm so excited the baseball season is right around the corner.

I listened to a lot of Disturbed on Spotify yesterday, they are a pretty good band. I like many of their original songs, although they have become too reliant on creating "Down With The Sickness" over and over again. That's an amazing song, but I wish they would try to stop creating the sound from that song. But the true revelation with Disturbed's music is the covers they chose to do. I love both their covers of Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight" and Genesis' "Land of Confusion". Here they are finally:

"The Good WIfe" Continues To Be Great, "The Wall Again", Good Bye "Terra Nova" I won't miss you.....much.

Two things I want to add to the information from yesterday's blog about Pink Floyd's "The Wall". First, if you bought the The Deluxe Experience Edition of "The Wall" from iTunes, it comes with all the cool things I mentioned yesterday. It also comes with a 50 minute documentary about the making of "The Wall". I haven't watched the 50 minute documentary yet. I've added it to the list of things I would like to do someday, but probably never will. It would be fascinating to get a peek into the mindset of Pink Floyd as they were making this classic CD.

This wouldn't be a bad purchase, especially you don't already have "The Wall" in your collection. For only $30 dollars you get this classic CD remastered plus a bunch of extra tracks and the documentary. The 8 live songs on the Deluxe Experience Edition have a crisp, fantastic sound. The crispness of these live tracks even sound great on my Mac laptop. Imagine how good it would sound on some high end audio equipment.

Speaking of their mindset during the making of this CD I picked up a very cool book from the library. If you would like to explore Pink Floyd's overall mindset as well as their creative process and their alienation while recording this CD I suggest you pick up the book "echoes: The Complete History of Pink Floyd" by Glenn Povey. It has information about everything Pink Floyd. It's about all their music, concert dates and the details behind making each of their CDs. It's a fairly complete picture of Pink Floyd up to 2006. It's also a relatively big book with a bunch of full color pictures. This includes great full colored pictures of "The Wall" stage set. I'm surprised how thorough this book is. If you are a huge Pink Floyd fan, and haven't bought this book, I suggest you do so soon.

I would also love to see "The Wall" movie and see Roger Waters performing "The Wall" live in concert in 2012. So far the closest date announced to where I live is in Denver. Unfortunately that's a bit out of my price range. Come on Roger Waters, you know you want to bring "The Wall" to Salt Lake, I bet you could sell out the Energy Solutions Arena. Or it would make a cool stadium show at Rice-Eccles Stadium. (You know the home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies.)

There are about six shows that I watch on TV each week. They seem to all be shoved in over the two days of Sunday and Monday. On Sunday there's "The Walking Dead" and "The Good Wife". And on Monday there's "Smash", "Alcatraz" and "Castle". So due to having things to do and a job sometimes it takes me a few days to catch up on all my shows. Sunday I watched "The Walking Dead", last night I watched "The Good Wife" and tonight I'm going to try and watch "Smash".

Last night's episode of "The Good Wife" was hilarious. With Will out on his 6 month suspension, the sharks are circling his empty office. They smell blood in the water and are wanting to become a named partner in Lockhart-Gardner. David Lee's blatant attempt to show how "unselfish" he is in wanting to assume Will's vacant office is hilarious. I love how Diane pointed out to him that he doesn't like people. Speaking of David Lee, I also loved how Alicia promptly dismissed him from her divorce case when she found out he had been talking about her behind her back.

I also loved Will's zany sisters and their attempts to help Will with his life. His being a named partner in a very successful law firm doesn't seem to impress his sisters all that much. He seems to never be able to live up to their expectations. However I especially love their attempt to line him up with Kalinda. There are so many ways that story could go, with so much humor and heartbreak possible. Honestly though I'm waiting for Will and Caitlyn to get together.

But the funniest scenes came from the court case about the documentarian who had filmed a suicide and was being sued for that. Obviously that part wasn't funny though. However I loved what Alicia Florrick did to counteract the judges fascination with her blonde opposing counsel. Once Alicia figured this out, she recruited Caitlyn to be her co-counsel. Caitlyn's attractiveness and her shrewdness were enough of a help to win the case for Lockhart-Gardner.

However the unintended consequences seem to put Caitlyn on a fast track while Alicia has seemed to take a bit of a step back.

I love how clever and funny "The Good Wife". I keep on hoping Season One of "The Good Wife" will show up at my local library soon, so I can catch up on many of the things I'm sure I'm missing out on.

I also continue enjoying "A Gifted Man", although it doesn't seem like it will be around for a second season. In my opinion that's too bad, this show has untapped potential. I continue to really enjoy "Blue Bloods". Tom Selleck continues to be one of the coolest guys on television and he knows how to rock a mustache. I love this show's combination of grit, humanity, emotional story lines and family values. I always have a poignant feeling watching this show. Don't miss with the Reagans for sure.

Although I wonder if this show has one too many Reagans. The producers don't seem to know what to do with Jamie. He's been involved with two undercover investigations now, neither of which have been particularly interesting. The Blue Templar story line was a very boring story line that hurt Season One. Then in the last episode the case about him infiltrating the mob had a sudden conclusion. It's almost like the producers realized they had this story line hanging around, they didn't know what to do with it and just wanted to end it quickly. They need to find something for him to do in the show or have him go somewhere else.

To no one's surprise the mega expensive "Terra Nova" has been cancelled. While the show had some potential and it was cool seeing dinosaurs on broadcast TV, I don't think anyone is going to miss it that much. It seems like the show should have been more exciting, it kind of left me feeling cold. Also the special effects could have been better, although they were nowhere near as cheap as "The Power Rangers". As for the characters they were all over the place. They seemed to be either enjoyable and fun or whiny and obnoxious. The whiny and obnoxious award goes to the two main protagonist's sons. There didn't seem to be any middle ground for the characters.

I also look forward for the almost two year long wait for "Mad Men" to end. I can't wait to see what Don Draper and Betty Francis are now up to. Did Don ever marry his secretary, or was that just a brief Draperish flame? What's going to happen with the firm? And I plan on watching at least the first couple of episodes of "The Killing". Not because I think it's going to be great, but because of the car crash element. I also want to see if they break last year's record for most rain in a season of a show. I don't care how bad "The Killing" will be, and trust me it will, I just hope it's crappy stink stays off the greatness of "Mad Men".

I continue rapidly reading through "The Hunger Games" trilogy. Right now I'm close to 20% through "Mockingjay". I seriously am loving this trilogy. Suzanne Collins should be commended for how clever these novels are. From the arena being shaped as a clock, to how she weaves the characters into the story in multiple ways and to the realness of Katniss. She's a character that I both identify with and root for a lot. I'm anxious to see how Jennifer Lawrence plays her in the upcoming movie. From the previews though it looks like she does a fantastic job though. But what I really want to know who's going to play Buttercup :)

Here's some good music. Since my blog has been around for 3.5 years it has earned some notice from other media sources. I get a few requests to review music for various companies a few times a month. A lot of times I don't even listen to the music and when I do many times it's not that good. However sometimes the music is good enough that I want to write about it. (Note to people who want their music reviewed by me. Again if you want me to review your music, either send me the music via a CD or digital format so that I can listen to it on iTunes. I don't want to have to go to a site to listen to it. And especially if it's good music I would like to keep it so I can enjoy it for the next several years. Who knows it may come to my attention again and I may write about it somewhere down the road. Of course there are no guarantees I will write about or commend this music.)

I also continue to enjoy the comparison and contrasts between "The Wall" tracks from the work in progress tracks to the final version. Here's an example of how much a song can change over time. Meanwhile the final version is rocking a lot more, a more go for the throat song. The finished version is almost exactly one minute less in length. The hard driving butt kicking rock version fits so much better into the paranoid world of "The Wall". Here's "Young Lust" from the movie:

"The Walking Dead" "Judge, Jury and Executioner", Pink Floyd "The Wall"

I'd thought "The Walking Dead" had finally turned the corner and was going to be a consistently good show. After a couple of pretty good episodes we get last night's boring episode. Last night's episode was a complete disaster from almost every point of view. Two things that really hurt this show throughout this season were on prominent display last night. This episode featured too much dialogue and not enough action. Another weakness is this show has too many main characters, but for some reason they will focus on peripheral characters for an episode or two.

"The Walking Dead" should center 90% of their story arcs on the main characters. Why spend time on peripheral characters like Randall and Hershel's crazy daughter? I don't care about the fate of either of these characters! But whatever you do, please don't spend a whole episode on them. Last night's episode was all about Randall and whether he should be killed or not. Unfortunately we had to put up with a lot of unneeded and even worse boring dialogue. When the episode ended, the issue of Randall still hadn't been resolved. The episode ended where it begins! Randall is still very much alive and still a problem. Does that mean we are going to have to deal with this storyline again? This show, which already has grown too comfortable on Hershel's farm, hardly budged.

Randall also is one of the whiniest characters on this show. He makes Dale look like a man. I hope Randall dies when the zombies take over Hershel's farm at the end of the season.

Any episode of this show that features Dale, Lori or Carl has a high chance of suckageness. And last night's terrible episode confirmed that. Those three characters played a prominent part in last night's boredom. It seems the producers forget when this show has too much talking, and not enough action, it becomes a slog. There's nothing wrong with a lot of dialogue, but it has to be good.

Dale is supposed to be positioned as the moral compass of the show, but to me he's just an idiot. He's a wimp, a lot of bluster and has no discernible leadership skills. The dialogue he's given is terrible and Jeffrey DeMunn's over acting doesn't help anything. Dale represents the pre-zombie world, he's not a fit in this new terrifying world of zombies. Every time the character of Lori appears on screen I want to scream. Just how lame is that character? If she's truly pregnant when is she going to start showing? I love how she's always wearing tight clothes. I predict she lost the baby in the accident on the way to town. That was just one of the many dumb scenes in this show. The producers will use her losing the baby in some way as a cliff hanger. I'm not sure that anyone will care though.

Also this show relies too much on the dumb character storyline. Too many times it's one of the Grimes family that's involved. Any story involving Lori and Carl teasing the zombie for instance. Carl goes out in the woods and finds one of the convenient zombies. At first Carl is scared. However when he realizes that the zombie is stuck he becomes a lot more brave. Maybe foolhardy is a better word. He throws rocks at the zombie. However Carl isn't very accurate and throws like a girl. And of course the zombie escapes the mud. Carl runs like a girl and leaves the gun behind. It's no surprise that the zombie came back later in the story. I predict in a future episode one of the characters will be out in the woods and find the gun. They will then realize that Carl was messing around in the woods.

I'm not going to stop my hating of the Grimes family here though. How the hell is Rick still the leader? The impotent leadership of Rick is symbolic of this whole show. Just when you think he's going to do something/ something is going to happen Rick/the show steps back from the brink. Yesterday Rick couldn't pull the trigger on either Randall or Dale. Again Randall survived the episode and Daryl had to do the dirty work to dispatch Dale. What kind of a leader is that? An ineffective and boring leader, that's who. Why do these people still follow wishy washy Rick? I don't think I would want Shane as my leader, but his leadership style fits more into the new world.

But at the end of the day "The Walking Dead" finally got rid of one of it's lamest characters, Dale. Who cares how he died though, just get that lame character off this show. Not only do we no longer have to hear his stupid speeches, we no longer have to see his mano a mano battles with Shane. If T-Dog isn't the most useless character in this series, then Dale was.

Over the final couple of episodes of this season I'll be cheering for the zombies to wipe out a few more of the lesser characters. I also hope zombies over run the farm and drive Rick's crew onward to a place much more interesting. Other than Maggie I hope to never see any members of Hershel's family ever again. Even in any other show! In the graphic novel Glenn stays with Maggie and Hershel's family on the farm.

I have the third and fourth graphic novels on the way from amazon.com. I look forward to reading those. The graphic novels are so much better than the TV show. Dale is a much more likable character in the graphic novels.

Also I love the fact that Season 2 of "The Killing" returns on April Fool's Day. I'm sure the irony is lost on the the idiot and humor challenged producers of the show. It's already been announced they aren't going to announce who killed Rosie Larsen until the end of this season. That means 13 more boring episodes until we find out who the killer is. My hope for "The Killing" is that it gets cancelled quickly, unless it somehow it has improved a lot. My expectation of this show improving is almost nil. It steadily got worse as the first season wore on. The season concluded with one of the dumbest cliff hangers ever.

I have to admit it has taken me several years to realize the greatness of "The Wall". I received the album as a birthday present when I was about 12. When I opened it up and saw some of the art work, including a giant bum on two legs, I didn't quite know what to think. I think I listened to a few of the songs and I'm not sure what happened to the album eventually.

As I was thinking about this CD a few days ago I realize that it makes a lot more sense to me after the disillusionment of a divorce. I understand a lot more the alienation of Roger Waters was going through as he was writing this.

Has anyone else been enjoying Pink Floyd's remastered "The Wall: Deluxe Experience Edition"? It's very good. Not only are there the original 26 tracks from the original CD. There are also 8 "Wall" live tracks performed live in 1980-1981. Then finally the most intriguing songs on the CD are "The Wall Work In Progress" songs. These are a couple of the songs that ended up on "The Wall" in a work in progress form.

Also some songs that didn't make the final cut. Such songs as "Teacher, Teacher":

and "Sexual Revolution". I kind of like this song, but it's clear why many of these work in progress songs didn't end up on "The Wall":

From very rough drafts like those above, it worked into classic songs like this. Whoever was the person that thought to have children sing the chorus of this song was genius. That gives this song a very creepy vibe that works well for this whole CD. This is one of the greatest videos ever:

Utes Men's Basketball Has Hit A New Low, BYU Falls

No one expected this Utes team to be even a mediocre team, so there's no surprise their record is 6-24 now. But did anyone expect the disaster that happened last night. Again not a surprise that they lost by a lot of points, they just aren't a very good team. But what's surprising is that after 13 minutes they trailed in the game by 34-2. How does a men's college basketball team get down by that much? That's them not playing either defense or offense. And can I just point out this is a very bad Pac 12 conference this year. They will be fortunate to get two bids to the NCAA's.

Then the last couple of off seasons, they've had several players transfer out of the program. How many will they lose this year?

Vendetta Red: It's Time For A Comeback

Warning this blog is for mature people only. Vendetta Red is a band that kicks some serious butt. However they talk about many subjects that will scare the prudish. Those topics include sperm, sex and rape- you get the idea.

Vendetta Red is a band I've written about before. They only had a brief time in the sun, before fading back to obscurity. This is their most famous song, which they performed at their one night only concert on March 5th, 2011. (I have no way to confirm or deny this, just taking the word of the person that posted it to youtube.com.)



However they also have a very good CD that came out a couple of years following their 2003 EP "Shatterday".  In 2005, they released the CD "Sisters Of The Red Death". I don't remember this CD making any impact at all. This is a selection of the many good songs from that CD:

First of all this was the song that ignited this blog. When I was exercising this morning, the song "Coital Improv" came on. I thought to myself I really like that song, but I couldn't remember who sung it. I checked my iPod and remembered how great that CD is. I especially like the "shanty town" line. Before I get out today, I want to share a really cool song with you. This is a new Arcade Fire song from "The Hunger Games" Soundtrack. I'm really looking forward to "The Hunger Games" movie. I love the trailer for it, it shows enough to get you to want to see the movie. However it doesn't give away too much of the story. Of course millions of readers already know the story. Anyway I love "Abraham's Daughter" and it's driving rhythm:



A quick sports note: Who in the hell was the idiot that traded for AJ Burnett? It seemed the Pirates were building on their early season success from last year. Then they go and trade for Burnett, a mediocre pitcher that has never lived up to his potential. He doesn't perform well in big games, a lot of times the Yankees didn't even use him in big games. And although he has been in MLB for several years, he still doesn't know how to handle a bat? A simple practice bunt attempt and he injures himself? He'll be out for the Pirates for 8-12 weeks. But it's not like he's that big of a loss. On the positive side, he does look good in the Pirates uniform. Sigh.

I know the Yankees Brian Cashman loved that deal. Pittsburgh here's a hint: don't trade for Jon "Sorely" Lackey of the Red Sox. Not only does he suck, but he'll miss the whole season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

In spite of that Pittsburgh I'll still be cheering for you this season. Got a Pirates hat on the way from amazon.

Also good luck to BYU who starts in the WCC Tournament tonight. Although they probably would get knocked out in the first round of the NCAAs, it would be nice to see them get in.

Bad day, good tunes

Hello,

Do you ever have one of those days when you are just in a funk and you just want to kind of wallow in it for awhile? Well that's the kind of day I'm having. This song is helping to bring me back from my funk.
