(Finished September 13th, 2017) The Best Songs From The Movies of 1977

Hello,

Coming this weekend to theatres near you is the 40th anniversary of "Close Encounters of The Third Kind". I also read about the 40th anniversary of the "Bat Out of Hell" soundtrack and recently picked up the book Phillip Caputo's "A Rumor of War". Which I'm sure you guessed is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year. Also 1977 is the year of my favorite movie ever, "Star Wars", the discorific "Saturday Night Fever" and the hilarious hockey movie "Slap Shot".

Some of the best albums of 1977 include Styx's "The Grand Illusion", Billy Joel's "The Stranger", ELO's "Out of the Blue", Boston's self-titled debut, the "Star Wars Soundtrack" and one of the all-time best CDs ever Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors".

The songs, well there are just too many. Keep your eye open for a few blogs highlighting that year's great music.

As for books there's Stephen King's "The Shining", a book that hasn't been bettered by a movie based on the book. The fantastic heartbreaking kids book "Bridge To Terabithia" by Katherine Paterson. Other great books include Robin Cook's "Coma", Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon" and Michael Herr's "Dispatches".

Anyway all these amazing things and so many other things released in 1977 inspired me to eventually write a series of blogs highlighting so many of the great pop culture moments of this amazing year. First though I'd like to start with great songs from movie soundtracks and the broadway soundtrack for "Annie".

Obviously this blog will be dominated by "Saturday Night Fever", which means this blog will be dominated by The Bee Gees.

(Finished August 29th, 2017) The Absolute Best Songs of Ed Sheeran: The Decent and The Good

Hello,

80's music will never be topped, in my humble opinion. But I just don't love 80's music, I like some music from every decade ever since the 1950s. One of the most popular and current hot musicians is Ed Sheeran. I love "The Shape of You" still, even though I've probably heard it approximately 18 million times- and I don't listen to a whole lot of radio. The absolute best of Sheeran will be on my next blog, expect sheer delight.

The decent:

"Lego House":

"All of The Stars";

"Hearts Don't Break Around Here":

The good:

"Perfect":

"Grade 8":

"New Man":

"Dive":

"Castle On A Hill":

(Finished September 18th, 2017) themusicaddict's review of "All The Missing Girls" and Philip Roth's "American Pastoral"

Hello,

I'm in the minority for reviewers of this book, but I thought this book was highly overrated. Since only two girls were missing, it should have been titled "Both The Missing Girls". The title indicates there may be some type of serial killer or some other interesting premise. However when you find out what happened to the missing girls, I went what? Just how dumb is that? I mean it's original story. But just because it has never been done, doesn't mean it should be done now.

As with a lot of other commenters I didn't like how the book went in reverse in the middle section. The book would have been better if it had went forward.

For me one of the best indicators for the quality of a book is if I want to read more books by the same author. For Megan Miranda, the answer is a big "no".  I also judge a book a lot by the quality of the ending. Honestly this book's ending sucks. A tangled mess of an ending for a tangled mess of a book. Miss Miranda is young so let's hope she figures it out.

"American Pastoral":

For the second book I'm going to review Phillip Roth's "American Pastoral", which won the 1998 Pulitzer for fiction. Unfortunately I found this book a complete bore, with virtually no redeeming values. It's just a slog, a meandering and pointless slog.

I've read Phillip Roth novels before, I loved, loved, loved "The Human Stain". What a great book, what great writing. The story is amazing, I love and feel for the characters. Probably in the Top 100 books I've ever read. Then I heard they were making "American Pastoral" into a movie. That meant that I needed to read it. This is one of the most disappointing books I've ever read.

Some quick questions: Why? What is the point? Why does the story feel so incomplete? There really wasn't any better books in 1997? Anita Diamant's "The Red Tent" and Stephen King's "Wizard and Glass" are substantially better than "Pastoral". Although different genres, in my opinion the best book of 1997 was Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air". A work of non-fiction that's so good that it reads like fiction.

Do yourself a favor and skip "American Pastoral" and read "Into Thin Air".

(Finished August 20th, 2017) An Eclipse Playlist

Hello,

Honestly I couldn't care less about Monday's eclipse, but a lot of people do. However I thought it would be fun to create an eclipse playlist. I looked at a few other eclipse playlists, and they were suggesting songs that didn't really make sense in the context of an eclipse. I tried to include only songs that actually made sense within an eclipse theme.

So that we're all on the same page, just what is an eclipse? From Google it's "an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer or between it and its source of illumination."

It seems that she'll be singing this song at an eclipse activity this weekend. Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart":

Pink Floyd "Eclipse":

No I don't think it will be the end of the world, but some people have suggested such nonsense. R.E.M. "It's The End of the World As I Know It (And I Feel Fine)":

Violent Femmes "Blister On The Sun":

I got these two songs from "Ultimate Classic Rock":
Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun":

Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine":

Van Morrison "Moondance":

Hello,

I'm trying to get a bunch of blogs started and then I'll go back and finish them in the next few days. This blog will eventually turn into Part 1 of the Greatest 80's Era Bands for my # 31 band Violent Femmes. I haven't even started listening to the five CDs that I'll be considering for their countdown blogs. This is yet another band that their first CD is their best CD. "Violent Femmes", with the little girl looking through the window, is one of the first great so-called "new wave" CDs. Although the Femmes had several great songs, I don't think they ever received the credit they've deserved. For now this blog will serve as a Violent Femmes sampler blog. As I usually do I'll highlight the lesser known songs before getting to the big songs. Enjoy.

(Finished September 7th, 2017) themusicaddict's Top 106 Greatest 80's Bands #32 The Knack: Their Best 80's Era Songs Part 1 # 42 to #31

Hello,

The Knack, powered by "My Sharona", is one of the least known rock bands of the 80s. However they've always been one of my favorite bands from that era. The Knack was lead by singer Doug Fieger, he cowrote "My Sharona". Unfortunately Fieger died at the too young age of 57. Other members over the years include Berton Averre, Bruce Gary, Prescott Niles, Pat Torpey, Billy Ward, Terry Bozzio, David Henderson, Duane Leinan and Ken Knaack.

The Knack is one of those bands who's biggest impact was with one CD. After exploding on the scene in 1979 with the amazing "Get The Knack", they were forced to do a couple of quick follow up CDs. The first was 1980's "... But The Little Girls Understand" and 1981's "Round Trip". That CD was actually decent, but it seemed to sink The Knack. They didn't make another CD until 1991's "Serious Fun". All the songs from "Get The Knack" and the under appreciated "Round Trip" are on this countdown. However six of the highest rated eight songs are from their debut CD.

Although I consider myself a big fan of The Knack I only have 17 of their songs on my iTunes.

42) "We Are Waiting":

41) "Pay The Devil":

40) "(Havin' A) Rave Up":

39) "It's You":

    (Finished September 13th, 2017) themusicaddict's Top 106 Greatest 80's Bands #30 George Michael and Wham Their Best 80's Era Songs Part 1 # 34 to #25

    Hello,

This is the first of The Greatest 80's Era blogs I've written since July 23rd. I've been doing a lot of work in being able to post a whole bunch of these countdown blogs over the next little while. Remember I consider the 80's era from 1977 to 1993.

This blog is the countdown blog for my # 30 Greatest 80s Bands for George Michael and Wham. I decided to combine both together as by themselves they wouldn't be as high as #30. George Michael was a great solo artist and he was also the heart of Wham! (Yeah, yeah I see you Andrew Ridgeley.) Michael and Ridgeley met in 1981, created Wham!, became big stars and then broke up in the Spring of 1986.

While Ridgeley went on to a mostly middling post-Wham! career. He did release 1990's "Son of Albert", which has the minor radio "Shake" on it (wow those vocals are painful, but the song is a lot better once the music becomes more prominent):

George Michael, born as Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, was born on June 25th, 1963. He sold over 115 million CDs in his magnificent career. Sadly on Christmas Day, 2016 George Michael died a way too early death. I have 8 Wham! and 58 George Michael songs on my iTunes.

    34) Wham! "Credit Card Baby":

    33) Wham! "Where Did Your Heart Go":

    32) Wham! "Come On":

    31) George Michael "Cowboys and Angels":

    30) George Michael "Waiting For That Day":

    29) George Michael "Heal The Pain":

    28) Wham! "Edge of Heaven":

    27) "Blue (Armed With Love)":

    26) George Michael "Hard Day":

    Hello,

This blog is inspired by Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen". That's one of the best one hit wonders and also one of the best 80s songs ever. It made me start thinking of what are the greatest one hit wonders of all-time. Which ones are the best sellers, the most popular or any other metric that can be used.

According to Ranker.com, these are the Top 26 one hit wonders:

Why Top 26? Because this song is so cool, it's definitely an all-time Top 100 song. 26) Lipps Inc. "Funky Town":

Perhaps the worst facial hair ever? 25) Mungo Jerry "In The Summertime":

    24) Gary Numan "Cars":

They have a lot of great songs, I doubt they are a one hit wonder. 23) Dead or Alive "You Spin Me 'Round (Like A Record)":

(Started August 11th, 2017/ Finished March 14th, 2023) Part 1 of Utah's KJQ SLC Radio Station 80's Playlist

    Hello,

KJQ was a Salt Lake radio station that played "new wave" music back in the early to mid 80's. I did some research, but couldn't find the exact years it was operating. Anyway they played so-called new wave music. Some of the most famous artists of that genre include U2, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, The Fixx, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, The Human League, The Smiths and probably my favorite new wave band, R.E.M. Some of these bands are still performing today.

So why am I writing about this now in 2017. Reason #1 is I love 80's music. But more importantly reason #2, within the last few months there's been a new station in the Salt Lake radio market that plays those same songs (right now playing Men Without Hats "Safety Dance"). It's a flashback to the greatest music decade and some of the more obscure, but great, new wave hits from then.

Again this blog isn't about those famous artists, this blog is about the obscure artists and the obscure songs of this amazing era of music. Some bigger bands had some songs that were a bit obscure, so I will include some of those. I've also included some well known songs, just because I like them.

One small request for The Wave 103.1, I wish they would keep a running list of the songs they're playing. But other than that, good job. I also love Rewind 100.7, it also plays 80's music. However it leans towards the rock and pop of that decade.

I can't guarantee all these songs were played on KJQ or The Wave 103.1.

Most people remember the more timely than ever "Beds Are Burning", but who remembers 1) Midnight Oil's "The Dead Heart":

    2) The Cult "Wildflower":

    3) Martini Ranch "Reach":

    4) OMD "(Forever) Live and Die":

    5) Peter Murphy "Cuts You Up":

    6) After The Fire "Der Kommissar":

    7) Bow Wow Wow "I Want Candy":

    8) The Call "I Still Believe (The Great Design)":

    9) Echo and the Bunnymen "Bring On The Dancing Horses":

    10) Jo Boxers "Just Got Lucky":

    11) OXO "Whirly Girl":

    12) The Smithereens "A Girl Like You":

    13) China Crisis "Working With Fire and Steel":

    14) Felony "The Fanatic":

    15) Haysi Fantayzee "Shiny Shiny":

(Finished August 10th, 2017) themusicaddict's Review of Judah and the Lion and Jimmy Eat World (Part 1 of 2 Parts)

    Hello,

This is part 1 of a 2 part blog series. I'm reviewing the three pronged attack of Judah and the Lion, Jimmy Eat World and Incubus at West Valley City's USANA Amphitheater. Overall it was a very good concert and I was glad we were able to see all three bands. They all had multiple highlights and USANA Amphitheater has a great sound system. All three bands know how to rock, but also have softer moments. This first part of the blog will be about the two opening bands. I'll be posting the videos for my personal highlights. First up Judah and the Lion.

Judah and the Lion said they've  been around for about three years, although it seems they've been around since 2011. While the two main bands changed up their setlists a bit Judah and the Lion played the same setlist they've played previously. They played six of their own songs, but mixed in a couple of covers to add a bit of spice. Both covers were entertaining in their own way.

    Judah and the Lions are:

    • Judah Akers – guitar, lead vocals
    • Brian Macdonald – mandolin, backing vocals
    • Nate Zuercher – banjo, backing vocals
    • Spencer Cross – drums
    • Dylan Oglesby – rhythm guitar, accordion, backing vocals
    • Daniel Weatherby – piano

As in this video the concert started out in the sunlight. We were able to sit close, but not this close. Judah is an able front man, other than the white man dancing. He's got a great voice and the whole band has great energy and musicianship as in this song. 1) "Suit and Jacket":

    2) "Conversations":
For some reason this worked, they had their tongue very much in cheek. If you didn't know, and who would, this is a T Pain song. 3) "Booty Wurk (One Cheek At A Time):

    4) "Reputation":

As in person last night and in this video the vocals were muddied up a bit. They weren't as clear as the other songs on the night. I'm not sure why there was a difference. 5) "Mr. Brightside":

    6) "Going To Mars":
    7) "Rich Kids":

Judah took off and ran out into the crowd during the "dance party" part of this song. 8) "Take It All Back":

    Jimmy Eat World is:

    Current members
    • Jim Adkins – lead guitar, lead and backing vocals (1993–present)[56][57]
    • Zach Lind – drums, percussion, programming (1993–present)
    • Tom Linton – rhythm guitar, backing and lead vocals (1993–present)
    • Rick Burch – bass guitar, backing vocals (1995–present)
    Current touring musicians
    • Robin Vining – keyboards, percussion, additional guitar, backing vocals (2011–present)

Jimmy Eat World almost played a hour, for some reason their set was two songs shorter than their previous concert. The songs they didn't play were "Lucky Denver Mint" and "Always Be". Those aren't two of my favorite songs of theirs so I was good with those songs not being played. Jimmy Eat World has been around since 1993. Adkins seemed to be shocked as I was that they've released nine CDs in that time. After "The Middle" they had completely fallen off my radar until I found out they would be coming in concert with Incubus. Jimmy Eat World put on a great performance, although they are led by a singer who looks like a rock star not at all. But again their 13 song setlist was good and very tight.

    1) "Sure and Certain":

One of my top 5 favorite Jimmy Eat World songs. For those who are wondering the chorus starts out "Salt Sweat Sugar On The Asphalt". I was curious and looked it up. 2) "Bleed American":

    3)"Big Casino":
    4) "I Will Steal You Back":
    5) "Futures":
    6) "Pass The Baby":
    7) "Pain":

    8) "Work":

A rock band shouldn't have the ability to write this beautiful of a song, but I'm glad they do. 9) "Hear You Me":

    10) "Get Right":

    11) "A Praise Chorus":

    12) "Sweetness":
This song needs no more publicity. 13) "The Middle":

    Hello,

Glen Campbell died yesterday after a brutal battle with Alzheimers, which he acknowledged his battle with in 2011. He released over 70 CDs and sold over 45 million CDs. Although he continued to tour and record until the very end of his life, his biggest success was in the 60s and 70s. Looking at the list below I'm not familiar with the #2, #3, and #7 to # 9 songs. I find that a bit odd as I've been listening to country music, off and on, for the last 40 + years. After a 6 + year battle with Alzheimers, and fighting family members, Campbell died yesterday in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 81. (Thanks to Wikipedia.org)

Glen Campbell's Top 40 Biggest Billboard Hits chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Hot Country Songs chart, through the Aug. 19, 2017, ranking. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, certain eras are weighted to account for different chart turnover rates over various periods. (Thanks to Billboard for the above rankings and thanks to Glen Campbell for all the years of great music.)
