(Finished October 27th, 2025) Part 1 of The Best Songs From Natalie Merchant and Other 80s and 90s Songbirds

Hello,

I'd like this series of blogs to be about great 80s and 90s songbirds. For this blog series I'm going to focus on lesser known female singers. By "lesser known" I don't mean to disparage anyone. Several of these women and women led bands had a lot of big songs. They're just the not first people you think of when you hear of 80s and 90s songbirds.

Natalie Anne Merchant was born on October 26th, 1963. She went on to have a successful career as the singer and main songwriter for 10,000 Maniacs. Eventually she left on her own to have some success as a solo artist. Here are some of the best songs of her entire career. These first seven songs are from her career with 10,000 Maniacs.

Sit back and enjoy some great tunes.

One of the many great covers of this Bruce Springsteen written song. 1) "Because The Night":

Another cover of a song by a legendary songwriter, Morrissey. 2) "Everyday Is Like Sunday":

3) "These Are Days":

4) "Trouble Me":

5) "What's The Matter Here":

6) "Like The Weather":

7) "Candy Everybody Wants":

These next few songs are from Natalie's solo career:

One of my all-time favorite songs 8) "Wonder":

9) "Carnival":

I love how prominently the bass guitar is featured here. 10) "It's A-Coming":

11) "Kind and Generous":

These next few songs are by Edie Brickell, with and without the New Bohemians

12) "What I Am":

13) "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall":

14) "Walk On The Wild Side":

These next few songs are by Bonnie Tyler:

15) "Total Eclipse of The Heart":

16) "Holding Out For The Hero":

17) "Faster Than The Speed of Night":

This one goes back to the 70s. 18) "It's A Heartache":

19) "Save Up All Your Tears":

(Finished October 4th, 2025) Part 6 of The Most MTVish Videos of The Early MTV Days: 1966ish-1986

Hello,

Let's go back to the early days of MTV and some of the most MTVish videos of the early days of MTV and pre-MTV. These videos came out between 1966ish to 1986. We'll go back a bit further to 1966 before anyone knew what music videos were and couldn't imagine a television station like MTV. some people who saw far into the future were making videos- or whatever word they used- to go with their songs. I loved MTV so much, especially the early days. It was so cool to see what these musicians looked like and learn more about that them. And as the kids would say these are all bangers!!

This will include videos from before MTV's debut. I had so much fun listening to all of these great songs again, it took me back to the hot summers of the 80s. I've updated this blog series to include the years of 1966-1975 and 1986.

As I'm working on this blog series I am also reading the very good "I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of The Music Video Revolution" by Rob Tannenbaum and Craig Marks. Highly recommended!

86) Quiet Riot "Cum On Feel The Noise":

87) Nick Lowe "I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock and Roll":

88) The Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime":

89) Michael Jackson "Thriller":

90) The Police "Every Breath You Take":

91) Simple Minds "Don't You (Forget About Me)":
