(Finished October 31st, 2019) The Music of History, Part 3: 33-49

Hello,

These are songs about the music of history, songs about historical figures, history or things that are history related. Some of these songs may or may not be about fictional people, although I really wished that Liberty Valance was a real person. If you want to find out more go to this website:  https://genius.com/Genius-lists-songs-based-on-historical-events-annotated

33) The Specials "Free Nelson Mandela":

This song is just as relevant today, if not more sure, than it was back in the 80s.
36) John Mellencamp "Rain On The Scarecrow":

37) Neil Young "Let's Roll":

38) Ronnie McDowell "The King Is Dead":

39) "At The End of The Day":

This might be one of the more obscure, but also most powerful, songs on this list. Afterglow were a couple of singers of the Mormon faith. This song has always been a favorite of mine. And if you didn't know this song is about Jesus. 47) Afterglow "I Heard Him Come":

48) They Might Be Giants "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)":

(Finished (maybe) October 30th, 2019) Damn Guns N' Roses Rocks Salt Lake City, They Were So Great Last Night!!!

Hello,

I was so lucky to be able to go see Guns N' Roses last night and they kicked ass. They played for 2.5 hours and played 25 songs. They played many classic songs and some deeper cuts. My only two minor quibbles was that it was a bit too loud (sorry I'm old) and I could've done without some of the jamming. But overall I would give it a solid A!

Guns N' Roses current incarnation:

Axl Rose, lead singer, piano and in general bad ass. After nearly every song he gave a very dainty bow at the center of the stage, which so doesn't fit in with his old reputation. The bad old Axl was nowhere to be found last night. He also gave the guy picking up his microphone stand quite a work out last night as Axl tossed it several times. I've watched a lot of videos leading up to the concert and I was concerned how Axl's voice was sounding now that he's 57. His voice sounded good, but it sounded suspiciously good. Is he singing over a backing track?

Duff McKagan, bassist, vocals and a long lanky presence on the stage. He's also the best backing vocalist they have.

Slash, lead guitarist, vocoder virtuoso and heart of the band. I loved so much he's wearing that Led Zeppelin shirt and even pulled out the double barrel guitar a couple of times.

Dizzy Reed, keyboards, piano and percussion.

Richard Fortus, guitars and a whirlwind of energy on the stage.

Frank Ferrer, drummer and a solid backbeat all night long. Based on appearance alone he may be the coolest of them all.

Melissa Reese, synthesizers, keyboards, backing vocals and you would know she's there unless you're looking for her.

Guns N' Roses closed their Salt Lake set last night with this all-time classic song, "Paradise City":

One of their older and lesser know songs "Shadow of Your Love":

"Welcome To The Jungle/ Double Talkin' Jive" (although "DTJ" was mostly a Slash solo):

"Dead Horse" and "Coma":

They ended their main set with this barn burner "Nightrain":

This song nearly always is put way too early in the setlist, second song here in Salt Lake City:

Slash showing off his vocoder skills on "Rocket Queen":

"Godfather Theme" and "Sweet Child O' Mine":

"Better":

(Finished October 28th, 2019) Best Songs About The Wistful Passage of Time, Part 1

Hello,

I didn't realize the rich vein that there was in songs about the passage of time. These songs are more about the passage of time rather than time itself. I might have cheated a couple of times however.

Choices made now will always have consequences, so be careful what you choose. 1) Michael Jackson "Billie Jean":

This is one of about 100 songs that I'll find any excuse to post. 2) Green Day "Whatsername":

3) The Counting Crows "A Long December":

4) Boston "Foreplay/Long Time":

5) The Ben Folds Five "Brick":

6) Sufjan Stevens "Casimir Pulaski Day":

I love everything about this song. 7) The Doobie Brothers "I Keep Forgettin'":

8) Bryan Adams "Summer of '69":

Yet another song that I post on my blog as much as I can. This is the song I thought of when I was thinking of the title to this blog. 9) The Kinks "Come Dancing":

10) Kelly Clarkson "Since U Been Gone":

Don't let time get away without spending time with those you love.
11) Harry Chapin "Cat's In The Cradle":

I relate to this song way too well now. 12) Neil Young "Old Man":

13) Bob Seger The Silver Bullet Band "Night Moves":

14) The Beatles "In My Life":

(Updated November 19th, 2019) Songs That Are Sad and That Rock, Part 1

Hello,

This is the song that inspired this blog, this is one of my favorite Hair Metal songs.
I think this video does a good job of capturing the essence of this song. I love the final scene and no definite answer about if father and son reconciled or not. 1) Faster Pussycat "House of Pain":

I'm not trying to fake it
And I ain't the one to blame
There's on one home
In my house of pain
I didn't write these pages
And my scripts been rearranged
No, there's no one home
In my house of pain

(Finished October 22nd, 2019) Covers of Classic 70s Songs, Part 2

Hello,

17) Boston, Rascal Flatts "Foreplay"/"Long Time" (with "Free Ride" attached):

18a) The Doobie Brothers, Traks,  "Long Time Running":

18b) Bananarama (Alma De Noche Mix):

19) Jethro Tull, Styx "Locomotive Breath":

Unlike other songs on this list this cover builds on Still's original. It takes a nice song and puts a funky spin on it without soiling the original. Both versions of this song are fantastic. 20) Stephen Stills, The Isley Brothers "Love The One You're With":

It doesn't surprise me I'm only the 80th view for this video, I couldn't think of a way this would work out for the song. In comparison I picked a random version of ZZ Top singing their own classic and it had 136 million views. This actually makes me think of another blog topic "When Covers Don't Make Sense". 21) ZZ Top, Tracy Byrd "La Grange":

The Beatles, Flaming Lips (featuring Miley Cyrus and Moby 22) "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds":

23a) Joe Cocker, Amii Stewart "The Letter":

23b) Sammi Smith:

24) Linda Ronstadt, Terri Clark "Love Is A Rose":

25) Wings, Guns N' Roses "Live and Let Die":

26) Olivia Newton-John, Tanya Tucker "Let Me Be There":

27) Grand Funk Railroad, Kylie Minogue "Locomotion":

28) The Doors, Long Beach Dub All-Stars "Love Her Madly":

29) Nazareth, Cher "Love Hurts":

30) Diana Ross, Jody Watley "Love Hangover":

Of all the 31 covers this is the worst and the Dinosaur Jr aren't even trying. 31) Nicolette  Dinosaur Jr. "Lotta Love":

To get that horrendous cover of a great song outta your head I'm posting the original by Nicolette Larson:

(Finished June 27th, 2020) Covers of Classic 70s Songs, Part 1

Hello,

I started working on the blog "What the L?: The Best 70's Songs That Start With The Letter L, Part 1". As I was working on it I realized how many of these songs were covered several years later and a lot of times those covers were as good, if not better, than the original. I've picked 31 of those songs and here I will post their covers. The band that sang in the 70s, who sang the cover and the title of the song. I can't guarantee all of these cover versions are good, some of them I'm hearing them for the first time.

1) Peter, Paul and Mary, Chantal Kreviazuk "Leaving On A Jet Plane":

2) Captain and Tennille, Lazlo Bone "Love Will Keep Us Together":

3) The Beatles, Billy Ocean "Long and Winding Road":

4) The Kinks "Lola" was covered by "Weird Al" Yankovic "Yoda":

5) Chic, The Millionaires "Le Freak":

6) Al Green, Tina Turner "Let's Stay Together":

Reel Big Fish stripped this song of all those things that made it good.
7) The Eagles, Reel Big Fish "The Long Run":

8) Kool and the Gang, Atomic Kitten "Ladies Night":

9) Derek and the Dominoes, Eric Clapton "Layla":

I think I might like Aretha's version better. 10a) The Beatles, Aretha "Let It Be":

10b) Ferry Aid "Let It Be":

11) "Lean On Me", Bill Withers, Club Nouveau:

12) "Lady Marmalade": Labelle and Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink:

15) "Love Is The Drug", Roxy Music, Grace Jones:

16a) "Life In The Fast Lane", The Eagles
16b) Jill Johnson:

This terrible version is the only version I could find of this song.
16c) Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood:

16d) Metal Allegiance

Hello,

This is the most recent setlist for Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown that I could find. They're opening for Guns N' Roses here in Salt Lake City on October 29th, 2019. Obviously they won't be playing as long as they did on the night of this setlist, but I thought this would give a flavor of them as a band, the songs and whatever else. Their most recent CD, "Truth and Lies" was released June 28th, 2019.

This is their setlist for their September 16th, 2019 show at the Capital Ale House in Richmond, Va. (Thanks to setlist.fm)

1) "Drive Me Mad":

2) "On To The Next":

3) "Ride":

4) "Shape I'm In":

5) "Trouble":

6) "That's All Right"/ Blues Jam:

7) "Downtown Tonight":

(Finished October 17th, 2019) How Is Axl Sounding in 2019?

Hello,

I'm going to the Not In This Lifetime Tour in a little less than two weeks. I've heard some pretty terrible instances of Axl Rose's voice lately, I'm hoping he sounds good on October 29th. Since I paid full price I expect a full performance.

He doesn't sound as good as he did back in the day, which I didn't expect him to. However I'm relieved he sounds so much better than he was last year. I'm looking forward to this concert.

The first time they've played this song since February 20th, 1992.  He sounds pretty good here although the sound quality isn't great. And will that lady please stop screaming? 1) "Locomotive":

2) "Coma":

3) "You Could Be Mine":

4) A cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun":

5) "Double Talkin' Jive":

6) "Mr. Brownstone":

Great audio and video. If they sound this good in Salt Lake I would be very happy.
7) "Paradise City":

8) "Welcome To The Jungle":

9) "Sweet Child O' Mine":

10) "November Rain":

11) "Nightrain":

(Finished October 16th, 2019) Best Songs By Those That Died In Aircraft, Part 1

Hello,

James Horner died June 22nd, 2015. He wrote music for over 100 soundtracks. His most famous work is for "Titanic", which sadly is one of the worst movies ever. I still want the 3 hours back of my life I used to watch that movie. Horner was the only person aboard the plane that crashed into the Los Padres National Forest. Three days later the crash was ruled an accident. (Thanks to Wikipedia.org)

I didn't plan on one blog to only have one musician, this blog just took on a life of it's own. The plan is only to have one to a few songs per musician, which is what I'll try to stick to with future blogs.

1) "Lighting The Fuse" from "The Magnificent Seven":

2) "Futile Escape" from "Aliens":

3) "Following KGB/ Releasing Sables/ End Credits" from "Gorky Park":

4) "Main Title" From "Clear and Present Danger":

5) "Combat Drop" from "Aliens":

I spent a lot of time researching this. When I wasn't satisfied with the songs I found I Googled and found a Buzzfeed article that gave me the following songs.

6) "Main Title from The Wrath of Kahn":

7) "Main Title" from "Aliens":

8) Linda Ronstadt, James Ingram and James Horner "Somewhere Out There" from "An American Tail":

9) "A Call To Arms" from "Glory":

10) "The Chase" from "Cocoon":

A song I found from my own research. 11) "Achilles Leads The Myrmidons":
