(FInished July 11th, 2025) Part 1 of The Best Rock, Soul and Pop Anthems of the Last 70 Years

Hello,

What is an anthem? I like this definition of an anthem, an anthem is "a song that speaks for someone". How does an anthem come about? Is it a song that is written to be an anthem, that seems like a heavy burden to pull off. I think an anthem is a song that develops into an anthem over time.

"Tramps like us, baby we are born to run". 1) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band "Born To Run":

"Who's gonna work for the working man? Who's going to hurt for the working man." 2) Bon Jovi "Work For The Working Man":

"One likes to believe in the freedom of music/ but glittering prizes and endless compromises/ Shatters the illusion of integrity." 3) Rush "The Spirit of Radio":

"Something touched me deep inside the day the music died." 4) Don McLean "American Pie":

"I do love you.... still." 5) The Commodores "Still":

"Everybody's talking about the new sound funny, but it's still rock and roll to me.". 6) Billy Joel "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me":

"Because your mine I walk the line." 7) Johnny Cash "I Walk The Line":

"Our love is timeless." 8) Rob Thomas "Timeless":

9) The Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter":

"Papa was a rolling stone/ wherever he laid his hat was his home." 9) The Temptations "Papa Was A Rolling Stone":

One of the most iconic lyrics in all of rock music and still true today. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." 10) The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again":

11) Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It":

"But on my tombstone when I go just put death by rock and roll." 12) The Pretty Reckless "Death By Rock and Roll":

"That's 'Retha Franklin/ She don't remember the Queen of Soul". 13) Steely Dan "Hey 19":

"Conform or be cast out." 14) Rush "Subdivisions":

15) Sinead O' Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U":

"Now I've heard there was a secret chord that David played/ And it pleased the Lord/ But you don't really care for music, do you?"16) Alexandra Burke "Hallelujah":

17) Lauren Daigle "Still Rolling Stones":
