These blogs are out of order because I have two different blog series. The first is the definitive songs of the 80s and the second is the best songs of each year 1980-1989.
I have nothing to do with this Kickstarter project, I'm not even a backer. Of course I would love to see this movie but it's not important enough to me that I'll contribute to it.
What does it take to have the most and best representative music of the 80s? There are several groups that need to be represented. We need at least one song by Madonna, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, Def Leppard, INXS, U2, Elton John, Billy Joel, Journey, Styx, Billy Idol, REO Speedwagon, The Smiths, The Police, Sheena Easton, The Thompson Twins, Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Guns N' Roses, ZZ Top, David Bowie, Tears For Fears, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston, Foreigner, Heart, Bon Jovi, Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Bangles, The Go-Go's, Bryan Adams, The Pointer Sisters
We need at least one song from from the genres of rock, pop. hair metal, rap, soul, new wave, also needed a quirky or goofy song or two, at least a smattering of one hit wonders
We also have to have a representative sample of the best 80s CDs: the much underappreciated INXS with "Kick", AC/DC's "Back In Black", ZZ Top's "Eliminator" and "Afterburner", Billy Joel's "Glass Houses", Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA", Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms", Def Leppard's "Pyromania" and "Hysteria", Foreigner "4", Peter Gabriel's "So",
We also have to have a representative sample of the best 80s soundtracks "Pretty In Pink", "Purple Rain", "Footloose", "Top Gun", "Flashdance", "Breakin'", "Less Than Zero", "Dirty Dancing", "Fame", "Urban Cowboy", "The Last Boys", Batman the Prince soundtrack, Batman the Danny Elfman score, "Urban Cowboy",
The musicians will be covered while discussing everything else.

I'm just going to turn these blogs into the greatest 80s country songs of all-time. I may or may not post other great 80s songs by each band listed. All of these artists are so much more than some of the greatest songs of the 80s.
This is in conjunction with my Top 102 Best Songs of each decade from the 50s to the 20s. I limited those blogs to the 102 best non-country songs. The first 102 songs are unofficially the best of 80s country music.

I do remember that and I liked a lot of those songs, I've tried to include the best Chant songs here. I don't know enough about Chant to know which are the best songs in that genre. I've filled out this blog with some of the best songs from the 60s and the 70s.

On March 1st, 2024 my rock concert girlfriend and I will be going to see "Les Miserables" here in the Eccles Theatre in Salt Lake City. This will be the seventh or eighth time I've seen this amazing musical. It quite likely is my favorite Broadway play ever.
From "Les Miserables" This is probably the best version of any song from the fairly dreadful "Les Mis" movie. I want them to remake that again, but this time with people that can all sing well. 1) Anne Hathaway "I Dreamed A Dream":

I've taken on the task of naming the 100ish best albums of all-time, wish has evolved into the about 140ish Greatest Albums of All-Time. I use ish as I'm not sure how many albums I will end with. Right now I have about 145 CDs on the Top 100ish Albums of All-Time. These CDs cover nearly every genre, era, style and decades. The CDs represented here range from the 1960s to the 2010s.
I'm starting with songs from CDs that aren't included on the Top 100ish albums of all-time. Thus the anti-preview. There's no guarantee that the bands below will have an album on the Top 100ish albums of all-time. But you will know some of the albums that won't be on that list.
Also for the most part I'll not be including greatest hits or live albums to this list. A certain Jamaican reggae musician may be an exception to that. Feel free to Google the albums each song is from.
After working on this blog for awhile it seems this will work out to be about 140 CDs as my greatest albums of all-time.
I'm not quite sure if she's going to have any CDs on this Top 140ish CDs of all-time list or not. If she does it will be either her first or second CD only.
69) Whitney Houston "My Name is Not Susan":
I will have to listen to "Nevermind" a few times to see if it's on this list. 70) Nirvana "Where Did You Sleep Last Night":
71) Sinead O'Connor "Emperor's New Clothes":
72) Depeche Mode "But Not Tonight":
I don't even know if I'd know who Fiona Apple is without this song. 73) Fiona Apple "Criminal":
I wasn't aware this had been made into a Broadway play. 74) Sufjan Stevens "Jacksonville":
Truly such a sublime song. 75) Eric Church "Springsteen":
76) The Go-Go's "We Got The Beat":
77) Billie Eilish "Bury A Friend":
78) Diana Ross "Upside Down":
79) Aretha Franklin "Respect":
80) The Supremes "Love Child":
81) The Offspring "Come Out and Play (Keep Em Separated)":

The Most Definitive Songs of The 80s:
1) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band "Born In The USA":
2) Dire Straits "Money For Nothing":
3) a-ha "Take On Me":
4) Paula Abdul "Straight Up":
This song isn't from the 80s, but it's included because it was the first video shown on MTV- back when people used to watch MTV. 5) The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star":
I watched the first Beverly Hills Cop with my son tonight. While watching that movie I realized that it came out 40 years ago this season. I told my son that this movie was when Eddie Murphy was the hottest comedian in the whole world. It still holds up pretty well, but as usual each sequel is a bit worse than the previous movie. I've seen the trailer for the fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" movie and it looks like it has some funny moments, but one of the bits was in the original "Beverly Hills Cop". It's amazing how many of these franchises are making appearances in 2024.
1984 likely was the best year for pop music of the 80s. The songs from that year's soundtracks were also pretty amazing. I'm starting with that first "Beverly Hills Cop" movie. These first five songs are from that movie.
These three songs are from "Footloose". 18) Mike Reno and Ann Wilson "Almost Paradise":
19) Sammy Hagar "The Girl Gets Around":
20) Shalamar "Dancing In The Sheets":
From one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, this song is in "Revenge of the Nerds". 21) Gleaming Spires "Are You Ready For The Sex Girls":
These next four songs are from "Stop Making Sense". All songs are by The Talking Heads. 22) "Psycho Killer":
23) "Burning Down The House":
24) "Girlfriend Is Better":
25) "Once In A Lifetime":
This song is from "Streets of Fire", an actual 80s movie I've never seen. 26) Dan Hartman "I Can Dream About You":
These next six songs are all from "Purple Rain" and from the genius of Prince. 27) "Baby, I'm A Star":
28) "Let's Go Crazy":
29) "Take Me With You":
30) "Beautiful Ones":
31) "When Doves Cry":
32) "I Would Die For You":
These next 6 songs are from "Breakin'". Two are on this blog entry and the other four songs are on Part 3 of this blog series. 33) Ollie and Jerry "There's No Stopping Us":
I'm not sure why this blog idea came to me. I was on a early Saturday afternoon walk, perfect weather, great music on my iPod when this blog idea came to me. Despite the amazing conditions in which I was walking in I started thinking of snarly songs. I arrived home and started Googling more songs to fill out the blog. Not only snarling songs lyrics wise, also snarling songs music wise or a combination of both.
