This is my review of the amazing Motley Crue concert at the Energy Solutions Arena in SLC on July 29th, 2015.
First of all my night was saved by an angel that came to my rescue at the last minute, she helped to make an already incredible night so much better. Thanks Heidi!
The show was suppose to start at either 7:00 or 7:30, it wasn't quite clear. We got to the ESA about 8:00 and we thought it was weird that people were still waiting outside. We got our tix and no rush because no one was moving. We eventually (all times are rough estimates) were able to get up to the main concourse about 9:00, but that was only to wait more. Fortunately I was with one of the most amazing people I've ever met. And although we were in the holding pen of pee, the time was well spent. Why do I call it the holding pen of pee? Heidi said it felt like we were cows in a holding pen. Well it was Heidi and I and 10,000 of our craziest and rowdiest friends all in an enclosed place. The smell of beer and pee- is there a difference in smell?- was all around us. Thus the holding pen of pee.
About 9:50 we were eventually allowed to go into the auditorium, expecting to see The Cringe play first. Thankfully The Cringe was bypassed in favor of Mr. Alice Cooper. Still at a spry 67 years young Mr. Cooper took the stage. He was backed by a solid band featuring 4 guitarists and one amazing drummer. One of those guitarists was from Salt Lake City.
The highlights of his show a blistering, sultry "Poison" as he pointed to various folks in the audience. Other highlights were "Welcome To My Nightmare" featuring a snake and "No More Mr. Nice Guy". Also "Feed My Frankenstein", featuring Frankenstein's monster running around the stage. Alice Mr. Cooper was forced to lay under a guillotine's blade and got his "head" chopped off. Although he lived to another day. They closed out with a blistering "School's Out". "Schools Out" had a tag of "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2".
Cooper and his band put on a fine performance.
They left the stage and about 20 minutes later the band we were all waiting for, the reason so many of us waited for almost 4 hours, roared on to the stage. They played only a 16 song set, with a lot of solos mixed in. I would've liked to see a few more songs, but that's a minor criticism. The band was tight, acting as a band close to celebrating their 35th anniversary. Vince Neil was in fine voice. If he was singing to a backing track, as some have suggested, I couldn't tell.

1) "Girls, Girls, Girls": How great is a band that can start their set with this song and the show not suffer, by far one of my favorite of the Crue's songs.

After 3 blistering songs, with "Primal Scream" featuring a Mick Mars solo, Vince took a few moments to talk to us. That wasn't very illuminating as the Crue aren't the deepest of thinkers.

Nikki Sixx took a moment to tell us about how stabbing one self in the arm is like the effect your favorite band has on you. And as the concert progressed I couldn't quite help think how great this band is due to the great songs written by Nikki Sixx. I wondered where they would be without his songwriting acumen.

"O Fortuna" played while the band took a brief break to prepare for the upcoming solos.
And then it was time for Tommy Lee and the Cruecifly.
Tommy played along to snippets from various song including Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" (I think), the Beastie Boys "Sabotage" and Cypress Hill's "How I Could Just Kill A Man".
After that it was time for another Mick Mars solo, an extended solo this time. Pushing into his late 50s, Mars is still amazing on the guitar. He never has been mentioned as one of the best guitarists, but he definitely is a great guitarist.
