Another Greatest Songs of All-Time issued from on high by Rolling Stone magazine. I love that magazine and have been a subscriber since the early 80s. I accept that people have different tastes in music and that's the way it should be, but. Just as fervently as I agree with some of their choices I also disagree with some of their choices. Currently I'm working on my Actual Greatest Songs of All-Time and honorable mentions. There are just some songs that I can't not include in the Greatest Songs of All-Time. I started with 100 Greatest Songs of All-Time. That has inched up to several hundred songs and will continue to rise. For this blog I'm going to focus on the actual Greatest Songs Of All Time.

These lists are very fluid. Most of these songs could have also been in my All-Time Top 100 if only I had thought of them earlier. There are probably at least 700 songs that will always be in my GSOAT.

The last blog I did in this series was over two years ago, time to do another one. I still need to read that book mentioned below.

This blog is mostly inspired by a book I saw a couple of years ago at Target. I loved the title of the book, which is "I Heard It In A Love Song". That of course reminded me of the classic Marshall Tucker Band song. I needed to hear that song again, then I took it further and decided to build a series of blogs around it. I'm focusing on 1977, it was an amazing year for music.

I spent more time than I should have to made sure all of these songs were released in 1977. If I am wrong on any it is my fault. I was trying to keep these songs in alphabetical order and I was pretty close, except for songs here.

I just can't get away from doing 80s music blogs, to me that was the greatest decade for music ever. These are songs that you haven't thought about for awhile or maybe never have thought about. My aim here is great songs that aren't completely forgotten but just haven't got the love they so deserve. I'm trying not to include completely obscure songs here. 

I'm trying to post songs, even if they were a big hit back in the day, that seem to have been forgotten. For instance I was watching an episode of "Suits" last night. Harvey Specter and Mike Ross were discussing the great band The Spinners. They were a band that had a lot of great songs, but some people would give you a blank look if you mention their name. In fact Mike Ross was not familiar with the Spinners. I'll be posting one of their songs later. 

What I'm trying to do is to post great songs, but not those songs that most sentient beings should know. In other words I won't have Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", Huey Lewis and The News" The Power of Love", Madonna's "Like A Virgin", George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" or "Faith" etc. In other words I want to post the 80% of songs that fit in between the obscure and the songs that most people should know. Most folks my age will be familiar with many of these songs. Great decade, great times, great music and a great life.

(Finished December 11th, 2023) Part 5 of The Best of New Wave

 Hello,

It's again about time to relive that great time of the early to mid 80s of New Wave music. New Wave is a genre that has quirky people, quairly lyrics and quirky music. It doesn't work all the time, but when it work at it's best the songs are great.

What exactly is/was New Wave music? Two things New Wave typically is energetic and fun. Part of the appeal is that New Wave never took itself too seriously. The lyrics weren't serious and weren't meant to be taken seriously. New Wave is basically just fun upbeat music to dance to. Who were some of the best New Wave musicians? The Thompson Twins, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Howard Jones and many others have to be considered the best New Wave bands.

You may see this and wonder why I didn't include U2 and The Police- both of who many lumped in with the New Wave movement. However both bands, especially The Police, feel like old fashioned rock bands to me. Other bands that were lumped in with New Wave, that I don't really consider New Wave, include The Talking Heads, Men At Work, Elvis Costello, The Go-Go's, The Eurythmics  and David Bowie. Duran Duran was lumped in with the New Wave crowd and I'm not sure they are truly a New Wave band. Of course this is all subjective and I will leave your determinations to yourself.

(Started December 8th, 2023) The Entire Led Zeppelin's Fifteenth To Last Concert

Hello,

On August 11th, 1979 Led Zeppelin played at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, England. Led Zeppelin also played at Knebworth one week before. Little did anyone know that Zeppelin would only play 14 more shows after Knebworth 1979, Part 2. By "Led Zeppelin" I mean all four original members John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. On September 25th, 1980 John Bonham died after drinking himself to death. What many expected happened officially on December 4th, 1980. Thus ending the greatest band of all-time. Led Zeppelin said in a press statement "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend, and the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were." They signed it Led Zeppelin.

If available I will use a song from the August 4th or August 11th Knebworth show. If a song isn't available I will find another live performance of that song.
