Motley Crue and The Holding Pen of Pee! July 29th, 2015 Motley Crue Concert Review (Updated August 2nd, 2015)

Hello,

This is my review of the amazing Motley Crue concert at the Energy Solutions Arena in SLC on July 29th, 2015.

First of all my night was saved by an angel that came to my rescue at the last minute, she helped to make an already incredible night so much better. Thanks Heidi!

The show was suppose to start at either 7:00 or 7:30, it wasn't quite clear. We got to the ESA about 8:00 and we thought it was weird that people were still waiting outside. We got our tix and no rush because no one was moving. We eventually (all times are rough estimates) were able to get up to the main concourse about 9:00, but that was only to wait more. Fortunately I was with one of the most amazing people I've ever met. And although we were in the holding pen of pee, the time was well spent. Why do I call it the holding pen of pee? Heidi said it felt like we were cows in a holding pen. Well it was Heidi and I and 10,000 of our craziest and rowdiest friends all in an enclosed place. The smell of beer and pee- is there a difference in smell?- was all around us. Thus the holding pen of pee.

About 9:50 we were eventually allowed to go into the auditorium, expecting to see The Cringe play first. Thankfully The Cringe was bypassed in favor of Mr. Alice Cooper. Still at a spry 67 years young Mr. Cooper took the stage. He was backed by a solid band featuring 4 guitarists and one amazing drummer. One of those guitarists was from Salt Lake City.

The highlights of his show a blistering, sultry "Poison" as he pointed to various folks in the audience. Other highlights were "Welcome To My Nightmare" featuring a snake and "No More Mr. Nice Guy". Also "Feed My Frankenstein", featuring Frankenstein's monster running around the stage. Alice Mr. Cooper  was forced to lay under a guillotine's blade and got his "head" chopped off. Although he lived to another day. They closed out with a blistering "School's Out". "Schools Out" had a tag of "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2".

Cooper and his band put on a fine performance.

They left the stage and about 20 minutes later the band we were all waiting for, the reason so many of us waited for almost 4 hours, roared on to the stage. They played only a 16 song set, with a lot of solos mixed in. I would've liked to see a few more songs, but that's a minor criticism. The band was tight, acting as a band close to celebrating their 35th anniversary. Vince Neil was in fine voice. If he was singing to a backing track, as some have suggested, I couldn't tell.

Here's the setlist:

1) "Girls, Girls, Girls": How great is a band that can start their set with this song and the show not suffer, by far one of my favorite of the Crue's songs.

2) "Wild Side":
3) "Primal Scream":

After 3 blistering songs, with "Primal Scream" featuring a Mick Mars solo, Vince took a few moments to talk to us. That wasn't very illuminating as the Crue aren't the deepest of thinkers.

4) "Same Old Situation" (S.O.S.):
5) "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)"

6) "Smokin In The Boys Room":
7) " Looks That Kill"
8) "Mother of The Year"

Nikki Sixx took a moment to tell us about how stabbing one self in the arm is like the effect your favorite band has on you. And as the concert progressed I couldn't quite help think how great this band is due to the great songs written by Nikki Sixx. I wondered where they would be without his songwriting acumen.

9) "Anarchy In The UK"
10) "In The Beginning/Shout At The Devil":

11) "Louder Than Hell"

"O Fortuna" played while the band took a brief break to prepare for the upcoming solos.

And then it was time for Tommy Lee and the Cruecifly.

Tommy played along to snippets from various song including Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" (I think), the Beastie Boys "Sabotage" and Cypress Hill's "How I Could Just Kill A Man".

After that it was time for another Mick Mars solo, an extended solo this time. Pushing into his late 50s, Mars is still amazing on the guitar. He never has been mentioned as one of the best guitarists, but he definitely is a great guitarist.

12) "The Saints of Los Angeles"
13) "Livewire"
14) "Dr. Feelgood":

15) "Kickstart My Heart" I paid $50 dollars so I could be a member of the Motley Crue fan club, that gave me the chance to buy tix before they went on sale to the public. Our seats were great, in the lower bowl. During "Kickstart My Heart" Vince and Nikki got on cranes that rotated out into the audience. The crane rotated just about 20 feet about our heads. I couldn't find any videos that showed the cranes. I went home with some streamers from the concert, which weren't a fought over concert souvenir.

16) "Home Sweet Home":

The Last 15 Songs Played On My iPod- Motley Crue Concert Night

Hello,

These are the last 15 songs played on my iPod:

1) Lou Gramm's "Midnight Blue":

2) Irene Cara's "Flashdance...... What A Feeling":

3) Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" Oh I hope so much that the Crue is amazing tonight, I've had too many disappointments in my life of late. I'm dying for some rock and roll catharsis. I've read that Vince Neil uses backing tracks for concerts and I'm perfectly okay with that. I don't know that he was ever that good of a singer. Concert review coming later this week.

4) The Cars "Let's Go":

5) Goo Goo Dolls "Broadway":

6) King's "Love and Pride":

7) Michael Jackson "They Don't Care About Us":

9) Daughtry's "Every Time You Turn Around":

10) Walk The Moon's "I Can Lift A Car":

11) King's "Won't You Hold My Hand":

12) Oingo Boingo's "Flesh n' Blood":

13) The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again":

14) Brandi Carlile's "The Story":

15) Ugly Kid Joe's "I Hate Everything About You":

Concert Review of The Band Perry In Wendover, Nevada July 25th, 2015 (Finished July 28th)

Hello,

The Band Perry are great in concert- in my opinion they are the best country band currently working. I know I sound like an old fart when I say this, but they were too loud. I love loud music, but louder doesn't always mean better. Also Kimberly Perry's mic was set too high. I thought they were going to fix it as the show went on, but they never did.

Again loud music is great, but louder doesn't necessarily mean better.

They said their new single is coming out on August 14th and their third CD is done. Their second CD "Pioneer" is amazing, I'm going to listen to it as I drive to work today. I can't wait to hear their third CD and add it to my collection.

Perhaps as their song library grows they'll continue to add songs to their live set. Hopefully they can get up to a full two hour set. I don't think they should take any covers out of their sets, I love their cover songs. I can The Band Perry are as much of music lovers as I am!

Here's the setlist:

1) "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight": This song is much slower on the CD, but they rock it out in person.
2) "Gone" Such a great song, see it live in the first song of the video below.
3) "Night Gone Wasted"
4) "You Lie"
5) "I'm A Keeper"
6) "Uptown Funk" (Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars cover) When I got home I bought the original version of this song from iTunes. What a great song and The Band Perry does it justice live.
7) "Hip To My Heart" (short version)
8) "Postcards From Paris"
corny segue way, talking about listening to fans "stories"
9) "All Your Life"
10) "Gentle On My Mind"- a more rocking cover of the Glen Campbell classic
11) "Chainsaw"

The band were allowed to do solos. The influence of the 80's is very strong. A guitarist played "Back In Black", another guitarist soloed on "Beat It", another solo was "Paint It Black" and finally a solo from a who song.

12) "Double Hearts"
13) "Fat Bottomed Girls" (Queen cover)

Encore, I thought it was bizarre the last two songs of their set were about death.

14) "If I Die Young"
15) "Better Dig Two"

Here's a Band Perry concert for your viewing pleasure:

The setlist for the above concert (I hope to finish it tonight):

1) "Done"
2) "Night Gone Wasted"
3) "You Lie"
4) "All Your Life"
5) "I'm A Keeper"
6) "You Better Dance" (not sure)
7) "Chainsaw"
8) "Fat Bottomed Girls"

Encore

9) "If I Die Young"
10) "Better Dig Two"

Thank You Lady Gaga For Rescuing the 2000's From Musical Mediocrity

Hello,

This blog was inspired by hearing Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" on my iPod on my morning walk. I was reminded of how great her music is and how revelatory it/she was in a not very interesting time for music.

The first eight years of the 2000's featured some great music. Among the amazing artists of that time included Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Green Day, Shinedown, Linkin Park, Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Nelly Furtado, Mariah Carey's comeback, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Fergie and Lifehouse.

Thanks to bobborst.com for the following year end chart information.

Before Lady Gaga exploded on the scene, these were some of the biggest "hits": (which features such dumb lyrics as "my boo"- really?) "Dilemma"- the #4 song on the 2002 year end chart

Usher's "Burn"- the #2 song on the 2004 year end chart. This is better than some of the crap coming out at this time, but quickly wears out it's welcome.:

The above song also says "my boo" and "what am I gonna do with my shawty gone". Really?

And what the hell is this steaming pile of crap? Sean Paul's "Get Busy"- how did a song this bad end up being the #3 song on the 2003 year end chart At least it didn't include the words "my boo".

Perhaps the worst of them all, Flo Rida. His way to fame was raping a 80's hit, add some lame raping and create his terrible songs. "Low"- the #1 song of 2008:

I don't hate all hip hop music, but a lot of it's terrible. Here are a couple of good songs from before Lady Gaga saved us all.

Nelly's moment of brilliance "Hot In Herre":- #3 song on 2002 year end charts.

Outkast's "Hey Ya" (still rocking on my iPod all these years later)- #8 song on 2004 year end charts:

Lady Gaga's "The Fame" CD was released on August 19th, 2008. It started out selling slowly, but she quickly pushed her way on to the world's consciousness. And again thank goodness she did. As an artist she's amazing, she brought us some of the most danceable and innovative music in several years. Her music was like a rose crawling up through so much dung. Seven years later she's still growing strong, although she has stayed out of the spotlight recently. Whereas some of these other artists have completely fallen off the musical map. And with the music they borrowed, stole "created", does that surprise you? Thank you Lady Gaga for great songs such as these:

"Poker Face": (the #2 song on 2009's year end chart)

"Just Dance": (the #3 song on 2009's year end chart)

"Lovegame" (the #35 song on 2009's year end chart)

"Paparazzi" (the #53 song on 2009's year end chart, also the #64 song on 2010's year end chart)

This could be the best song of this century so far, it's great on so many levels. "Bad Romance": (the #8 song on 2010's year end chart)

"Telephone" (the #16 song on 2010's year end chart)

"Alejandro" (the #33 song on 2010's year end chart)

2010 megamix:

And of course Lady Gaga knows how to write a ballad, one of my favorites of her most recent songs "You and I":

My only frustration with Lady Gaga is her blatant use of sex to sell her music. Stefani you don't need sex to sell your music. You're being played by the music industry. There's a distinct line between sexy and skanky, you're clearly on the skanky side of that line. Continue to make great music and stop trying to sell a skanky image that may or may not represent you. The skankiness is mainly why I don't post most of your actual videos Stefani.

The Dominating D's 4: Depeche Mode, Daughtry, Dead or Alive and Devo (Finished July 13th, 2015)

Hello,

It didn't seem right to only give one song to each of these 4 bands. These bands have created some of the most danceable and rocking music ever. Yes, I know it's mainly because of "American Idol" that we know of Daughtry. But along with Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson their beginnings didn't define who they are as artists. They were able to escape and become truly awesome and original artists. Enjoy! These bands are in no particular order.

Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence":

"All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm"

"A Pain That I'm Used To":

"People Are People":

"Strangelove":

"Little 15":

"A Question of Lust":

"Master and Servant":

"It's No Good":

"Barrel Of A Gun":

"Everything Counts":

"Just Can't Get Enough":

Daughtry's "Outta My Head":

"Over You":
"You took a hammer to these walls
Dragged the memories down the hall
Packed your bags and walked away
There was nothing I could say
And when you slammed the front door shut
A lot of others opened up
So did my eyes so I could see
That you never were the best for me"

"Every Time You Turn Around":

"Crawling Back To You":

"Start of Something Good":

"Crazy":

"What I Meant To Say":

"Feels Like Tonight":

"What I Want" (featuring Slash):

"Home":

Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me 'Round (Like A Record)":

"Brand New Lover":

"Lover Come Back To Me":

"Something In My House":

"It's Been A Long Time":

"Even Better Than The Real Thing":
