(Started January 16th, 2023) Biggest and Hottest Songs From 40 Years Ago- January 15th, 1983

Hello,

What were the biggest songs 40 years ago this week. I like looking at lists like this, it reminds me of a lot of songs that I hadn't heard in years. This list comes from https://top40weekly.com/1983-all-charts/

The Top 40:

1) Men at Work "Down Under":

2) Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney "The Girl Is Mine":

3) Don Henley "Dirty Laundry":

I haven't heard or thought of this song in so many years. 4) Hall and Oates "Maneater":

"Let's Get It On", only not as good and a bit skanky. 5) Marvin Gaye "Sexual Healing":

6) Toni Basil "Mickey":

I think this song will always have a place in pop culture of the world. 7) Toto "Africa":

8) James Ingram and Patti Austin 'Baby, Come To Me":

9) The Clash "Rock The Casbah":

The exquisite and wildly underappreciated Dionne Warwick. 10) Dionne Warwick "Heartbreaker":

11) Laura Branigan "Gloria":

12) Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle "You and I":

13) Joe Jackson "Steppin' Out":

14) Little River Band "The Other Guy":

15) Phil Collins "You Can't Hurry Love":

16) Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band "Shame On The Moon";

17) Kenny Loggins "Heart To Heart":

18) ABC "The Look of Love (Part 1)":

19) Adam Ant "Goody Two Shoes":

20) John Cougar "Hand To Hold On To":

21) Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers "You Got Lucky":

22) Fleetwood Mac "Love In Store":

23) Billy Joel "Allentown":

24) The J. Geils Band "I Do":

25) The Stray Cats "Stray Cat Strut":

26) The Stray Cats "Stray Cat Strut":

27) Sammy Hagar "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy":

28) Lionel Richie :Truly":

29) Juice Newton "Heart of The Night":

30) Kool & The Gang "Let's Go Dancin' (Ooh La, La, La)":

31) Musical Youth "Pass The Dutchie":

This is a truly great song, but I'm surprised that it made the Top 40. 32) Peter Gabriel "Shock The Monkey":

I thought this was a song that I had never heard, but I was wrong. 33) Tavares "A Penny For Your Thoughts":

34) Moving Pictures "What About Me":

It's Culture Club and Boy George's first introduction to America. 35) Culture Club "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me":

This song came out one year after her biggest hit "Bette Davis Eyes". 36) Kim Carnes "Does It Make You Remember":

37) A Flock of Seagulls "Space Age Love Song":

38) Air Supply "Two Less Lonely People In The World":

Oh it's that "Memory". This song was near the end of Barry Manilow being relevant in the pop culture seen. Well Barry we'll always have "Mandy" and "Copacabana". Thank you for those. 39) Barry Manilow "Memory":

He had three Top Ten hits as part of Raydio. Then he had a Top Ten hit on his own with "The Other Woman".  Now this is a song that I have never heard before, but it's a pretty good song. Two years after this Parker would reach his peak with the funk masterpiece "Ghostbusters". 40) Ray Parker Jr. "Bad Boy":

This week's drops:

Down 33 places. Supertramp "It's Raining Again":

Down 27 places. Pat Benatar "Shadows of the Night":
Down 30 places. From "An Officer and a Gentleman" Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes
This song was down 22 places and why do I have a feeling I'll be singing the chorus of this tomorrow? Fogelberg died way too young. The man behind "Longer", "Same Auld Lang Syne" (which is one of my all-time personal favorites), "Hard To Say" and "The Language of Love". Dan Fogelberg "Missing You":

(Finished January 16th, 2023) Part 6 of 90s Earworms: 86 to 102

Hello,

Happy Martin Luther King Day!!

I completed the first five of these blogs in late 2021 and early 2022.

Many of these songs are earworms, but eventually this blog turned into the best songs of the 1990s. I still think the 80s is the best decade for music, but these songs show the 90s was a very good decade as well. On this specific blog entry we have pop, a Santana classic, the Hip-Hop of Cypress Hill and Coolio, a Spice Girls ballad, a lot of great dance music and several classics by Metallica.

86) Alanis Morissette "You Learn":

87) Jewel "Who Will Save Your Soul":

88) Donna Lewis "I Love You Always Forever":

89) Heavy D and the Boyz "Now That We Found Love":

90) The Cardigans "Lovefool":

91) Alanis Morissette "Crazy":

92) Utah Saints featuring Kate Bush "Something Good":

93) KLF "What Time Is Love":

94) Gloria Estefan "Turn The Beat Around":

95) The Cranberries "Linger":

96) R.E.M. "Losing My Religion":

97) Cher "Believe":

98) Arrested Development "Tennessee":

Originally I had Oasis' "Wonderwall" here. But when I was doing a catalog I realized that I also had "Wonderwall" at #3. 99) Enigma "Return To Innocence":

100) Cathy Dennis "Too Many Walls":

101) Everclear "Santa Monica":

102) The Goo Goo Dolls "Iris":

(Finished January 14th, 2023) Part 1 of The Best Songs from 90s Soundtracks (Not The Best 90s Soundtracks)

Hello,

These are the best songs from 90s movie soundtracks. Those include songs released the same time as the movie or any time preceding the movie.

I love Whitney Houston but "I Will Always Love You" is one of my least favorite songs. Thus that won't be on this blog. Neither will the silly "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" or sillier "Animal Crackers" from "Armageddon". Although the "Armageddon" soundtrack is so much better than it's movie. I couldn't wait for that movie to end. It came at the time when many movies were made that focused on a lot of action, which the filmmakers hoped took away attention from the lack of quality story. Maybe the great songs were made to take away from the lack of story as well?

A movie that should have been so much better than it was, "Grosse Pointe Blank":

1) Violent Femmes "Blister In The Sun":

2) The English Beat "Mirror In The Bathroom":

3) Queen and David Bowie "Under Pressure":

4) Guns N' Roses "Live and Let Die":

5) Faith No More "We Care A Lot":

6) Pete Townshend "Let My Love Open The Door" (E Cola Mix):

"The Bodyguard" trailer:

Whitney Houston was so spectacular in so many ways. Long live her music. 7) Whitney Houston "I Have Nothing":

8) Whitney Houston "I'm Every Woman":

9) Whitney Houston "Queen of the Night":

The "Pulp Fiction" trailer:

10) Kool and the Gang "Jungle Boogie":

11) Urge Overkill "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon":

12) Ricky Nelson "Lonesome Town":

13) Dusty Springfield "Son of a Preacher Man":

The SubUrbia trailer:

From "SubUrbia" 14) Gene Pitney "Town Without Pity":

"That Thing You Do" trailer:

The Wonders "That Thing You Do":

The "Magnolia" trailer":

These next two songs are from "Magnolia" 16) Supertramp "The Logical Song":

17) Supertramp "Goodbye Stranger":

(Finished December 24th, 2023) Part 22 of themusicaddict's Actual Greatest Songs Of All-Time: Top 110 Songs

Hello,

Another Greatest Songs of All-Time issued from on high by Rolling Stone magazine. I love that magazine and have been a subscriber since approximately the early 80s. I understand that a lot of people have different tastes in music. That's the way it should be, but like everyone else I have my own opinions. Just as fervently as I agree with some of their choices I also disagree with some of their choices. Currently I'm working on my Top 110 Songs of All-Time and honorable mentions. There are just some songs that I can't not include in the Greatest Songs of All-Time. I started with 100 Greatest Songs of All-Time. That has inched up to several hundred songs and will continue to rise. For this blog I'm going to focus on the actual Greatest Songs Of All Time, not the honorable mentions. These songs are part of my Top 110 GSOAT.

These lists are very fluid. Most of these songs could have also been in my All-Time Top 100 if only I had thought of them earlier. There are probably at least 700 songs that will always be in my GSOAT. Again these are GSOAT, 17 of my Top 110 GSOAT.

I don't think I have published my actual Top 110 greatest songs of all-time, I'm starting that tonight. Why 103 songs? Why not? I was reminded of many of the below songs by perusing Rolling Stone's Top 500 songs of all-time.

There are Top 110 greatest songs of all-time- without a doubt. This is locked in stone and will not change. Now of course I'm lying. This isn't even my Top 110 GSOAT right now. That will be constantly changing as I remember songs, discover new songs, discover old songs, fall out of love with songs, fall in love with songs etc. And the number by the song is no way my personal ranking for that song, it's just a way to help me keep this organized.

18) Guns N' Roses "Paradise City":

19) The Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive":

20) Paige/ Dickson "I Know Him So Well":

21) Madonna "Live To Tell":

22) Poison "Every Rose Has It's Thorn":

23) Fergie featuring Q-Tip and GoonRock "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)":

24) Frank Sinatra "Mack The Knife":

25) Sinead O' Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U":

26) The Smiths "How Soon Is Now":

27) Duran Duran "Come Undone":

28) Donna Summer "Dim All The Lights":

29) Marvin Gaye "Let's Get It On":

30) Emeli Sande and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra  "Crazy In Love":

31) Duran Duran "Ordinary World":

32) Lady Gaga "Bad Romance":

Whoo-hoo 33) Gladys Knight and the Pips "Midnight Train To Georgia":

34) U2 "Pride (In The Name of Love)":
