Hello,
Today is iTunes fifth birthday. Happy Birthday iTunes, thanks for all the great music. Songs that knocked me out on my iPod today include Jordin Sparks "I Who Have Nothing" and Carly Smithson's "Blackbird". Why again is she not on the show anymore? She is a better singer than any of the remaining contestants. Five years from now the only one of the remaining contestants I can see having more success than her is David Cook. TCWCNB will be an "AI" footnote like Taylor Hicks.
Tonight's "American Idol" was a mixed bag. Why do the judges love "TCWCBN" so much. The first song he sang was okay but his version of "America" was terrible. He is just not manly enough to sing that song. Jason Castro does not care anymore, he is just going though the motions now. He just wants to get back to Texas and enjoy a bong. Also I think a good strategy at this point is not to win. According to the fine EW writers Adam B. Vary and Michael Slezak the 20 songs competing for finale song are all pretty awful. Who wants to have a song as lame as "Do I Make You Proud?" attached to their resume. Other bad things about winning, look what happened to Jordin Sparks who won last year. She was pushed to do all this promotional work and now she has something wrong with her throat. I am not saying one lead to the other, but all that promotion work did not help her voice either.
Brooke White's first song was okay, I wish she would stop disagreeing with the judges though but the second song she sang "I Am...I Said" was fantastic. I had thought she had completely lost her mojo, but that was pretty darn great. (In other news she is Carly Simon's favorite "AI" contestant, although Carly Smithson was named after her.)
Again David Cook had two solid performances, I actually have to agree with the seemingly wasted Paula Abdul in that he will probably be the next winner of "AI". Seriously was she drunk or stoned because she certainly wasn't lucid. I also thought it was funny that the producers of "AI" thought she could do quick critique's. Why did they not realize that would be a problem?
Last and certainly not least, Syesha Mercado. Her first song, "Hello Again" was good. I just think she has a great voice. I liked her second performance even more "Thank The Lord for the Nighttime". I was a little disappointed in that I thought she could rock it out just a little bit more. But overall a very good performance. I do have to agree with Simon though when he said Syesha "might be in a bit of trouble". I don't think it's for the reasons Simon said, I think it is all about fan bases. The other four contestants have such solid fanbases, they would have to announce they kill babies or some other atrocity to lose a big segment of their fan bases. Then it is not a guarantee that those votes would go to Syesha.
One more note about "AI" I will be working tomorrow when the results show will be on. My wife is recording it for me, so my review will be up soon.
One final note I saw the weirdest thing in my life. Def Leppard was on "Dancing With The Stars" and they sang two songs. They sang "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and their new song "Nine Lives". "Dancing" is one of those shows that my wife watches and I have to watch with her. So if she hadn't been watching this I would have never seen this strange spectacle. Def Leppard rules. I read an article in Blender magazine today, Taylor Swift is a huge Def Leppard fan.
One more Def Leppard note, their new CD is out today. The title is "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge". Oh now I see why the "DWTS" producers thought that Def Leppard might be a good fit. Also Madonna's "Hard Candy" is in stores as well. Unfortunately I am in a bit of a financial pinch now, so there will be reviews of these CD's when I have some money. There are about 10 great CD's out now that I would go buy if I had the money.
Anyway here are some other songs that rocked my iPod today, in no particular order: 1) "No Cars Go"- Arcade Fire 2) "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"- Led Zeppelin 3) "We Looked Like Giants"- Death Cab for Cutie (I know I already have mentioned this song but it is just great.) 4) "License To Kill"- Gladys Knight 5) "The Silence Between Us"- Bob Mould 6) "Breakdown Dead Ahead"- Boz Skaggs 7)"Boom, Boom"- John Lee Hooker 8) "If I Were A Carpenter"- Johnny and June Carter Cash and 9) "Baby Hold On" by The Dixie Chicks.

Amy Winehouse, Coldplay
Not much to report today. Amy Winehouse has been released from prison and has been told to be a good girl. She needs to make some difficult choices and cut off some of the bad influences from her life asap. I could see her becoming one of the tragic deaths at an early age, another casualty of the high life of a rock star.
Also Coldplay has a new CD coming out and in honor of that they are going to be offering the first single from their new CD free for a week. The title of this song is "Violet Hill" and you can get it starting tomorrow morning at www.coldplay.com/song.html It is only going to be available free for one week. Even though I do not like Coldplay I get all the free music I can. I will download it and give you a review within the next couple of days.
I have to be honest with you I am not a big Coldplay fan, in fact I am not even a little Coldplay fan. In one of my previous lives I worked at a job that we were suppose to be playing music and announcements over the pa. However they were not playing, but the pa still worked. So we played a few CD's and we listened to one CD by Coldplay over and over again. It has to be some of the wimpiest music of all-time. I could feel the testosterone draining from my body as I listened to these wimpy songs. However I do realize they are one of the biggest bands in the world, I just don't understand why. I do have to give thumbs up to Chris Martin, he somehow wooed Gwyenth Paltrow, and they named their first child after the greastest computer companies in the world. (That is a stab at humor.)
Also according to multiple media reports, Miley Cyrus is apologizing for some illicit pictures on the internet and in the new issue of Vanity Fair. I have seen some of these pictures and they are harmless. My question is doesn't she have people that are suppose to keep her away from these type of things? Where are they and where were they when these pictures were being taken.
I will be rocking my iPod tonight and will try and find some sweet new or old tunes to bring to your attention. Here's one real quick: The Postal Service's "Clark Gable". This is a side project for some of the people from the excellent band Death Cab for Cutie.

Syesha's last week and great music
Hello fine folks,
For those of you getting sick of the "AI" updates, I apologize. It is one of the few shows I watch week in and week out. (I would also highly suggest "Cold Case" and "Without A Trace".) So from here on out it looks like a battle of the fan bases. Based on the way the fan bases voted last week, I think Syesha Mercado will be going home this week. I don't think she has much of a fan base, which I honestly don't understand. She is attractive and has a great voice. But at this point of the season, it is all about fan bases.
We have five contestants left: the much maligned Syesha Mercado, the queen of pity votes Brooke White, the overpraised and over hyped "TCWNBM", the mellow vibe dude Jason Castro and probably the most entertaining contestant David Cook. It it was up to me "TCWCBN" would be replaced by the much more talented and interesting singer Carly Smithson. Then Brooke White would be the next to go, followed by Jason Castro, followed by Syesha. Then it would be a finals battle between Carly Smithson and David Cook and whoever won would be fine with me.
Also speaking of Jason Castro, I am kind of getting bored with him. However I listened to his "Hallelujah" again yesterday. That is such a great song and his performance was perfect. So what I am trying to say is, "Jason we will always have Hallelujah." If you don't have it yet you need to add it to your collection.
I started a new job yesterday and I am allowed to listen to my iPod for this job. Again last night I remember so much why I love my iPod. I have an iPod mini, which currently hold about 970 songs. I just put it on shuffle and let it go. Since all those songs are songs handpicked by me, it is classic song after classic song. It is excellent. If I get sick of a song I can just delete it. Also usually when a song a has 14 listens I also delete it from my iPod. It's a sickness of mine and I figure it is time to let some other songs to have some love. It also has a clock, games, a backlight and many other cool features. My wife got that as a gift for me and that is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received.
A couple more random notes: A CD that is an amazing piece of work is the Dixie Chicks "Taking the Long Way". For all the crap they took after those comments about Bush, you can't tell by this CD. Overall I give this CD an A, and it has at least four classic songs on it. The four classic songs are: "I Hope", "Not Ready To Make Nice", "Baby Hold On" and "Easy Silence".
Also I was listening to some Whitney Houston today, she had such a great career. I just wonder what happened. She should have never hooked up with Bobby Brown, but she still would have had plenty of problems on her own. Again I think I already mentioned this but she is in the studio supposedly making a CD that is due about Christmas. Also I saw a bit of the MTV series "Rock The Cradle" stay far away from this piece of crap. Anyway her and Bobby Brown's son is on that show. (I never thought I would mention Bobby Brown ever in one of my blogs. Also on that show he called "My Perogrative" a "perfect song". I prefer what Eddie Murphy said and I am paraphrasing here, "It sounds like Bobby Brown learned a new word.")
One final note here is a little loved 80's classic: Paul Hardcastle's "19". Check out this song, musically it's great and it is also history lesson. It is a very sobering history lesson. Also another great song I heard from the past last night is "Punk Rock Girl". This is another 80's classic, this one is by the Dead Milkmen. Those are two of the songs rocking my iPod last night.
Again I just want to put a plug in for download.com, it has over 111,000 free mp3's that just self load on your iTunes. You can search the entire database or do what I do. I just get the mp3 of the day via my facebook.com page. However gorge away if you would like.

Updates, "AI" singers debut CD's
Hello,
According to several websites, Amy Winehouse has been arrested. She has had frequent problems with the law. So has her husband, who has been accused of beating her at least once. Winehouse has been accused of "suspician of assault".Winehouse is best known for her hit song "Rehab" from her second CD "Back To Black". While "Rehab" is a good song, her best song is "You Know I'm No Good". Ironically after saying she wouldn't go to "rehab no, no, no" she did. She appeared at this years Grammys via video hookup from England. That is where she is from and where she is undergoing rehab. (yes, yes, yes)
Also according to website riaa.com, the Eagles "Long Road Out of Eden" has actually sold 7 million copies. That is pretty impressive. One other CD of note, AC/DC's "Back In Black" has sold 22 million copies. That is the first CD they made with Brian Johnson, after the untimely death of original lead singer Bon Scott. The rumors are that AC/DC is in the studio recording their final CD. Also they say their next tour will be their farewell tour. That means they will only go on tour 3 more times after that.
For those of you that haven't been able to find it and desperately need to buy William Hung's "She Bangs", I have good news for you. You now can go to iTunes and download it right now. You can also buy Kristy Lee Cook's debut CD as well. The title of the CD is "Devoted" and you can download it now for $8.99. I was surprised in that it is a lot better than I thought it would be. There are some originals on it as well as she sings covers of "Stand By Your Man", "Blue", and a countryfied version of "Unchained Melody". On amazon.com you can get a 30 second preview of each song. This song is not available on iTunes.
Two other "AI" CD's/downloads of note 1) Brooke White's 2006 CD "Songs from the Attic" is available for only $29.99. You can't preview her songs though and this CD is not available for download on iTunes. 2) Carly Smithson released her first CD way back in 2001 when she was known as Carly Hennessey. The CD is titled "Ultimate High". You can get this download on both iTunes or amazon.com for $6.99. This CD was highlighted by the Wall Street Journal as the difficulties of the music industry. According to that article this CD sold a combined total of 378 CD's in it's first three months of release. It cost her record company $2.2 million dollars to produce and promote the CD. It roughly cost her record company $5820 for each CD it sold. Also the cover of both these CD's both Hennessey and White have been sexed up. I find that ironic in that Brooke White is the "G rated nanny".
Also here is a song you should add to your collection: "Samsonite Man" by Alicia Keys. It is from her CD, "The Diary of Alicia Keys". It is a great song.

Tidbits and Nuggets
Hello friends,
Yes Tidbits and Nuggets, my favorite 70's band.
For all of you waiting to buy CD's from your American Idol favorites, here is some good news. amazon.com has a first to know link you can sign up for, you will receive an e-mail as soon as their new CD's come out. Of course their will also be massive publicity of course and it will probably be timed with the "AI" tour. For "AI" tour dates go to americanidol.com. I hear TCWCBN's CD is going to be called, "I Can Only Sing one Style of Song".
Other "AI" news next week Neil Diamond is going to be the mentor for the final five contestants. For enquiring minds Carly Smithson was going to sing "Sweet Caroline". Also here's hoping David Cook goes back to his adding a rock twist to the song he sings. I am thinking for him "America" would be a good choice. Also although it is a little more obscure, I think "On The Robert E Lee" would be a good choice for him. For TCWCBN I think "Amazed and Confused" from "The Jazz Singer" would be a good song choice for him. Not that it has anything to do with the song but more because I am amazed and confused that he is hasn't been kicked off the show yet. For Jason Castro I can see him singing "I Am...I Said" or "Yesterday's Songs". I can just see TCWCBN and Brooke White fighting over "Heartlight" right now. That is easily one of his best songs. Then I think Syesha should stick with a upbeat song, she rocked that "One Rock 'N' Too Many" song. Perhaps "Thank the Lord for the Nighttime", or maybe "You Baby" would be good choices for her. And for Carly Smithson I think, oh yeah she was unwisely voted off by America.
Also both Syesha Mercado's "One Rock 'N' Too Many" and Carly Smithson's "Superstar" are both well worth the 99 cents.
Now on to some none-"AI" news: As I mentioned previously Jesse L. Martin quit "Law and Order" to star in a movie about Marvin Gaye. I think he will do a great job, he has a pretty good voice. Marvin Gaye was a great singer and had a solid career. But one thing he struggled with was live performance. I am basing that on the worst live CD I ever heard, it is called "Music Legend: Marvin Gaye In Concert". He stretches these songs way past their normal running time. He doesn't do it for the better either. So avoid this CD at all costs unless you are buying it for a white elephant gift.
Here's some music to check out, something old, something new. The old being The Eagles classic 1979 CD "The Long Run". This is a great CD that features such classics as "The Long Run", "Heartache Tonight", "In The City" and "I Can't Tell You Why". The Eagles also released a CD in 2007. It is titled "Long Road Out of Eden". It is an good CD and has some great songs on it. This was the first Eagles CD since "The Long Run". To make up for that 28 years between releases this CD is a double CD. The new CD has sold about 2.8 million CD's the last I heard, even though for the first couple of month's it was only available at Wal Mart and the Eagles website.
The new: Two bands I would like to highlight. The first being "The Pipettes", a band that brings back that old girl group feeling of the 60's. Their best song is titled "ABC" off the "We are the Pipettes" CD.For those of you who like Amy Winehouse. Also the other band is The Gossip. They have two great songs from their first CD, "Listen Up" and "Standing In the Way of Control". For those of who like your bands led by a big powerful female band. One final note, if you have not bought Paramore's "Riot" yet go buy it. It is well worth the few dollars you will spend for it.
Two more notes: 1) Remember today is Free Music Friday over at goombah.com. You can get 15 songs free including Cake's classic song "Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle" plus some other choice songs. Also here is obscure song of the week, a song that should not be obscure. It is from the 80's, the best decade for music, the song is My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) by the band Chiliwack.
Remember the 80's. You had great pop like Madonna. You had great rock like U2, Pat Benatar, Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Loverboy and Foreigner. That was also the peak for rap music, the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC were at their peaks. That was also the time that Public Enemy was "Bringing The Noise" and LL Cool J was "Goin' Back To Cali" and his "Mama Said To Knock You Out". (I took a little liberty with the titles, forgive me.) There was also great one hit wonders like Dexy's Midnight Runners and Big Country. That was also the peak of the great 80's Heavy Metal era personified by Guns 'N' Roses, Motley Crue and Cinderella. Yes I am old and am having a nostalgic moment.

The new CD has sold about 2.8 million CD's the last I heard, even though for the first couple of month's it was only available at Wal Mart and the Eagles website.
The new: Two bands I would like to highlight. The first being "The Pipettes", a band that brings back that old girl group feeling of the 60's. Their best song is titled "ABC" off the "We are the Pipettes" CD.For those of you who like Amy Winehouse. Also the other band is The Gossip. They have two great songs from their first CD, "Listen Up" and "Standing In the Way of Control". For those of who like your bands led by a big powerful female band. One final note, if you have not bought Paramore's "Riot" yet go buy it. It is well worth the few dollars you will spend for it.
Two more notes: 1) Remember today is Free Music Friday over at goombah.com. You can get 15 songs free including Cake's classic song "Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle" plus some other choice songs. Also here is obscure song of the week, a song that should not be obscure. It is from the 80's, the best decade for music, the song is My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) by the band Chiliwack.
Remember the 80's. You had great pop like Madonna. You had great rock like U2, Pat Benatar, Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Loverboy and Foreigner. That was also the peak for rap music, the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC were at their peaks. That was also the time that Public Enemy was "Bringing The Noise" and LL Cool J was "Goin' Back To Cali" and his "Mama Said To Knock You Out". (I took a little liberty with the titles, forgive me.) There was also great one hit wonders like Dexy's Midnight Runners and Big Country. That was also the peak of the great 80's Heavy Metal era personified by Guns 'N' Roses, Motley Crue and Cinderella. Yes I am old and am having a nostalgic moment.

She is extremely gracious and just grateful for her chance. Now when her CD comes out I am going to go buy it. I hope she keeps the rocker edge, I really liked that when she did that.
Also I have seen other people with Top 12 lists of their all-time favorite idols, I decided to compose my own. Now obviously this will be changing over time. Here goes:
1) Kelly Clarkson: The original Idol and the best singer of the bunch. She also has two great CD's although her third one is not quite as good. She is currently in the studio making her 4th CD. I am looking forward to it. 2) Carrie Underwood: The most gorgeous of all American Idol contestants. Also other than "Jesus Take The Wheel", most of her songs are fantastic. I particularly like, "Before He Cheats", "Inside Your Heaven", "Lessons Learned" and "Crazy Dreams". 3) Jennifer Hudson: She sings great and she won an Oscar for her work in "Dreamgirls". Also she has been working on her CD for the last few months, it will be interesting to see what it sounds like. 4) Melinda Doolittle: Other than the music one can buy from last season's "AI" she does not have any other music out that I know of. But like Hudson she has that big old voice. I don't know why she doesn't have a CD out, when Blake Lewis does. Last I heard she doesn't even have a recording contract. 5) Kimberly Locke: I wrote about her in an earlier blog. 6) Tamrya Gray: Her debut CD, "The Dreamer" is fantastic. Also she is starring in the Broadway production of "Rent". How cool is that. We are also still waiting on her second CD. 7) Daughtry: a fourth place finish on "AI" but he had the #1 selling CD for 2007. It is a very good CD and it is good to see a rocker have the #1 CD for the year. I think David Cook can have a career much like Daughtry. 8) Jordin Sparks: she has had a pretty successful career after winning the show last year. Although I guess now she is having some serious throat issues. My prayers go out to her. She was all set to go on tour with Alicia Keys, Sparks could have learned a lot from her. 9) Carly Smithson: Even though she was only the sixth place finisher this year, she had one of the best voices. Also I give her extra points because she has the rocker vibe. Check out her blistering take on Heart's "Crazy On You". 10) David Cook: With Carly gone I think he is going to win this season. He is the most creative, and I am disappointed he didn't rock out "Music of the Night". It will be interesting to see what he does next week when Neil Diamond is the mentor. 11) Syesha Mercado: I love her voice and I am glad she sang an uptempo song. Hers was a fantastic take on "One Rock 'N' Roll Too Many". 12) Lakisha Jones: Last season fourth place finisher I believe. She is also currently acting on Broadway. No word yet on a CD.
People left off the list on purpose, no I did not forget these. Blake Lewis: boring, Taylor Hicks: A preview of TCWCBN non-existent career., Clay Aiken: lame, Ruben Stoddard: Not as many CD sales as he should have with the AI machine behind him. Although he does seem like a very nice guy with some talent. I liked how "AI" tossed him a bone by having him sing "Celebrate Me Home". Katherine McPhee: Hopefully she will join the Top 12 someday. Her first CD is serviceable. Josh Gracin also has an outside chance of making the Top 12. Bo Bice and Ace Young: Please! To Quote "Evita" Hello and Goodbye. Sanjaya: Do I have to say anymore?
So obviously with Brooke faltering on Tuesday and not even being in the bottom 2, it is now a battle of the fan bases. Brooke must have a pretty big fan base. Although for her mental health she needs to be voted off soon. She seems like she is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Also it is ridiculous that they made her skip her sister's wedding, "AI" is just not that important. I have an idea, let's replace Brooke now with Carly for Brooke's mental health. So the winner will probably be between the Davids, probably based on who has the biggest fan base. I think David Cook's fanbase is pretty stable, but I think TCWCBN's fan base is declining rapidly.
Also I have a couple of questions about Leona Lewis last night, "Bleeding Love" is a great song, not that you could tell it last night though. Where was the live band and where was the thumping bass behind it?
So what do you think about "AI" this season? Also what do you think about a 16 year old girl, Miley Cyrus, writing a memoir. As always leave comments and suggestions.

Obviously I did not know what was going to happen tonight, I was in shock when I found out that Brooke was safe. After giving one of her worst performances of her run and one of the two worst performances of the night how was she safe? Also you darn 13 year olds why do keep on subjecting us to "TCWCBN" week after boring week? Honestly how many of you rushed out and bought "TCWCBN" weeakened arrangement of "Think of Me"? If you don't understand my anger listen to the original version as sung by Michael Crawford or the brilliant Sarah Brightman.
So let me see if I have this right the two lamest performances of the night are safe and the two best performances of the night are the bottom 2. Not only that but both Mercado's and Smithson's performances were even better Wednesday night. One thing that helped me feel better was sometimes the non-winner goes on to have the better career than the winner. I can see that happening if "TCWCBN" wins. Now if David Cook wins I can see him going on to have a tremendous career. Epecially since his 2006 CD "Analog Heart" was briefly #1 on amazon.com's music chart for a week before it was pulled.
It didn't help that "Law and Order" followed "American Idol" and on show Carly Smithon was voted off and on the other show it was Jesse L. Martin's last night. He was the detective who played Detective Ed Green. The difference is that Martin is leaving on his own volition. He is going to go work on a Marvin Gaye movie. Martin was one of my all-time favorite characters in the "Law and Order" universe. Also he was one of the original cast members of the classic Broadway musical "Rent".
One more quick note from the you have got to be kidding me file: Miley Cyrus is preparing her memoir to come out in 2009. She will be 16 then.
