Hello,
On Sunday afternoon the Dodgers completed a 3 game sweep of the Padres by winning 2-1. Ho hum, the Dodgers win again. LA is a steamroller rolling over most obstacles they face.
Zack Greinke had another good outing, he pitched 7 innings, allowed 2 hits and 1 run. He improved to 14-3 and lowered his ERA to 2.78. Kenley Jansen struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in earning his 24th save. Jansen lowered his ERA to 1.86. With Jansen, newly signed Brian Wilson and the steady Paco Rodriguez I hope LA gets away from relying on Brandon League or Carlos Marmol at all.
Yasiel Puig hit his 14th homer, which ended up being the game winner, in the 6th inning. Puig was 2 for 4 and is hitting .351. Two other Dodger batters had multiple hit games as well. Carl Crawford was 2 for 3 and is hitting .289. Mark Ellis continued his recent hot play, was 2 for 4 and is hitting .278. Greinke had the other Dodgers hit, he was 1 for 2 and is hitting .347.
Also the Diamondbacks lost, the Dodgers lead them by 11.5 games. Both teams only have about 25 games to play.
Dodgers.com's Ken Gurnick is reporting that Matt Kemp still isn't comfortably hitting because of his sore ankle. He's likely to be going to the Arizona Instructional League rather than the Dodgers dugout. I agree that the Dodgers should be very cautious with Kemp, shutting him down for the rest of the season if they need to. But I'm more than a little disappointed by his latest setback.
Kemp has been playing for Class A Rancho Cucamonga for 3 games. He was 0 for 11 and struck out 5 times. (Thanks to ESPN LA.) Of course with how few games Kemp has played this season, LA has learned how to play without him. Obviously it would be better if the Dodgers had Kemp available, but I still think they can win the World Series without him.
One of Kemp's most notable statistics this season is that he's only played 62 games, which isn't even half of the season. Other notable stats include him being on the DL 3 times, has a .263 batting average and is being paid $20,250,000.
On Monday the Dodgers start a 3 game series with the Rockies in Colorado. Since today is Labor Day, the game will be played this afternoon. Today's scheduled starting pitching matchup: Clayton Kershaw (13-8 and league leading 1.72 ERA) vs. Chad Bettis (0-3, 4.80 ERA). Will LA's offense show up for Kershaw Monday? The Dodgers haven't scored a whole lot of runs lately, they've scored 36 runs in their last 10 games. LA scored 21 runs in three of those games, they only scored 15 runs in those other 7 games. In those 7 games LA scored 2,2,1,2,4,2, and 2 runs. LA has been able to get away with a low amount of runs thanks to their excellent pitching staff.
