Dodgers Daily, October 16th, 2013: Game 5 of NLCS:Dodgers Score 6 Runs, Extend Season

Hello,

In a win or go home game for the Dodgers, they rose up with 4 homers and 6 total runs. LA won and was able to extend the NLCS for at least one more game.

After only scoring 8 runs in the previous 4 games the Dodgers scored 6 runs on Wednesday. Bizarrely enough LA's offense was powered by the long ball. Sticking with their usual home run trend though all the homers were solo shots. Adrian Gonzalez had two homers while Carl Crawford and A.J. Ellis each added a home run. The Dodgers ended up needing nearly all those hits.

Zack Greinke had his second effective outing in the NLCS. He pitched 7 innings, gave up 6 hits and a walk. However he was able to hold the Cardinals to only 2 runs in his 7 innings. If a pitcher can hold an opponent to 2 runs or less, his team should win that game at least 80% of the time. Thankfully the offensively anemic Dodgers offense was able to provide enough runs for LA to win the game.

While Greinke was playing solidly and Brian Wilson had his second hold of the series, Kenley Jansen was another story. In the 9th inning he gave up 4 hits and 2 runs but he did eventually shut down the Cardinals. He struck out 3 Cardinals, but not without some tension. Thank goodness for the insurance runs the Dodgers scored.

The Cardinals lead the series 3-2 with the NLCS returning to St. Louis. Game 6 is Friday night, the scheduled pitching matchup is Clayton Kershaw vs. Michael Wacha. LA usually doesn't score a lot of runs, but for some reason they score even fewer runs when Kershaw is pitching. In order for LA to somehow win the NLCS they need to probably score at least 5 runs each game. Max Scherzer showed why he deserves the Cy Young award in his last start, will Kershaw do the same Friday night?

I'm glad the Dodgers extended the series, but they still face an uphill challenge to get to the World Series.

Meanwhile in Wednesday's ALCS game the Tigers won 7-3, the ALCS is now tied 2-2. The story of this game was that the Tigers jumped all over Jake Peavy. In the worst start of either League Championship Series Peavy only lasted 3 innings. He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks for a total of 7 runs. Other than that Red Sox pitchers didn't give up any more runs. Highlighted by Brandon Workman's 2 solid innings, Boston relief pitchers didn't allow any runs.

Game 5 of the ALCS is Thursday night. The scheduled pitching matchup is Jon Lester vs. Anibal Sanchez. In Sanchez's last start he was one of several Tigers pitchers that almost no hit the Red Sox, Boston didn't get a hit until the 9th inning. In that outing Sanchez pitched 6 innings, gave up no hits and no runs. He did give up an incredible 6 walks, however he was effective enough to keep the Sox from scoring.

For some reason it feels like the two highest scoring teams are going to break out in this game, I'm expecting a lot of runs by both teams. I hope that the Red Sox score the majority of the runs though.
