"Hi Infidelity" is REO Speedwagon's 9th record and also their best and most classic work. There's not a dud on this record, great song after great song. "Hi Infidelity" was released on November 21st, 1980 and went on to be the top selling record of 1981. (I use the term record, as that and radio, was the way most people consumed music in 1980. When I say "record" I refer to actual lp (long play) records, cassettes and maybe even an 8 track or two. Although 8 tracks were kind of the fax machines of their day, a technology that somehow survived, although no one was sure how.) "Hi Infidelity" went on to sell 10 million copies. "Hi Infidelity" isn't listed in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest CDs of the 80s. (For what it's worth Graham Parker's "The Mona Lisa's Sister" is ranked at #97.
On July 19th, 2011 Sony Music released a 30th anniversary edition of this CD with bonus tracks. That's how you can tell you're getting old is when 30th anniversary editions are being released of music you remember when you were a kid. (Thanks to Wikipedia for much of the info used in this blog.)
At the time of the original record REO Speedwagon was comprised of Kevin Cronin: vocals, guitars and keyboards, Gary Richrath: guitars and vocals, Neal Doughty: keyboards, Bruce Hall bass and vocals and Alan Gratzer- drums, percussion and vocals.
