I was watching the first episode newly reprised "Freaks and Geeks" on Hulu the other day. The show is based in 1980 and has many of the great songs of that time played in the show. The song that really stood out was Styx's "Come Sail Away". It's a song I didn't like much for the longest time but have grown to like over the last few years. But last night it really hit me how great of a song it is. For 1979 we know that was a terrible year for rock music as that year was the peak of disco. But there were still dozens of great rock classics in this five year window.
1) Boston "More Than A Feeling":
2) ELO "Telephone Line":
3) Toto "Hold The Line":
4) Pink Floyd "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2":
These are the more of songs that start out slow and then explode. Some people call them eargasms. The first two songs are basically the patron saints of musical eargassms.
1) Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight":
2) Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody":
3) The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again":
Led Zeppelin's best song, this entire song is an eargasm. 4) Led Zeppelin "Whole Lotta Love":
5) The New Pornographers "The Bleeding Heart Show":
6) Ike and Tina Turner "Proud Mary":
7) Led Zeppelin "Over The Hills and Far Away":
8) Radiohead "Creep":
9) Alabama Shakes "Hold On":
10) The Foo Fighters "The Pretender":
11) Heart "Crazy On You":
12) Aztec Camera's "Jump":
13) Brandi Carlile "The Story":
14) Jethro Tull "Aqualung":
15) Pearl Jam singing the Mother Love Bone classic. "Chloe Dancer/ Crown of Thorns":
16) My Chemical Romance "Welcome To The Black Parade":
The newly revamped Fleetwood Mac 17) Fleetwood Mac "The Chain":
I couldn't decide to focus on Greatest Duets of all-time or exploring new wave music. I've decided to go with New Wave music that I'm not familiar with (and maybe a few favorites), at least from the title. Let's see how this works out. For the foundation of these blogs I'm using songs from the "Just Can't Get Enough" 15 CD compilation of new wave classics.
Is this not the absolute definition of an obscurity, I had never heard of this song before. To be fair I don't know what radio station this would have been played on in the late 70s. In 2010 Roger Francois Jouret, aka Plastic Bertrand" was revealed to be having Milli Vanilli issues with his first 4 CDs.
1) Plastic Bertrand "Ca plane pour moi":
2) The Normal "Warm Leatherette":
3) Flash and the Pan "Hey St. Peter":
4) D-Day "Too Young To Date":
5) Graham Parker "Local Girls":
6) Dave Edmunds "Girls Talk":
7) Tim Curry "I Do The Rock":
8) The Inmates "Dirty Water":
I was wondering if this was a cover of the classic Monkees/ Neil Diamond song. It is indeed!!
9) Tin Huey "I'm A Believer":
11) Suburban Lawns "Gidget Goes To Hell":
12) Ian Dury & The Blockheads "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick":
13) Human Sexual Response "What Does Sex Mean To Me?":
14) The Kingbees "My Mistake":
A very weird title for an offbeat song, but I like it. 15) Tonio K "The Funky Western Civilization":
16) The Beat "You Won't Be Happy":
I was fairly sure I knew this song, but I couldn't quite place the song. Then I heard the first few notes and instantly remembered it. 17) Split Enz "I Got You":
I updated this blog and replaced a couple of expired links on September 4th, 2022.
"Cobra Kai" Season 3, episode 10 when Ali (the still beautiful Elisabeth Shue), Daniel and Johnny all get together and I had a complete surge of 80s nostalgia. Then Journey's classic "Faithfully" started playing and the feels took over. Here are a few of the likely hundreds of great 80s ballad. Long live the pop culture of the 80s.

32) Chris Deburgh "Lady In Red":
33) Cinderella "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)":

I was scrolling through my blogs looking for good blog ideas. A couple of years ago I wrote about the best Synth Pop songs and I was thinking about writing another synth music blog. Then I remembered that I've been wanting to do a bass blog for awhile. Here it is, thanks to Bassplayer, MusicRadar and ultimate-guitar.com. Many of these songs are on all three lists, not just the list I post them under.
I discovered both of these songs on the MusicRadar website. 19) Metallica "For Whom The Bells Toll":
20) Rush "Freewill":
Thanks to ultimate-guitar.com for the excellent selections below.
21) Wild Cherry "Play That Funky Music":
22) Parliament "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)":
23) Electric Light Orchestra "Last Train To London":
Best songs about the black experience. I'm a white guy and I have no idea what the black experience is like. So this isn't coming from knowledge, but from trying to understand the black experience.

What is obscure? I guess that would be any thing that you might not be familiar with. For instance I've heard The Knack's "My Sharona" many times, and it has been in movies etc, but it might be obscure to you. Even some songs on here by big named artists are obscure to me. To paraphrase I guess obscurity is in the ear of the beholder.
1) Ocean "Put Your Hand In The Hand":
Uh, some of the lyrics have been changed from the original. It hurts. 2) The Knack "Good Girls Don't":
3) Melanie "Brand New Key":
4) King Harvest "Dancing In The Moonlight":
5) Jessi Colter "I'm Not Lisa":
6) Sanford Townsend Band "Smoke Of A Distant Fire":

9) Ides of March "Vehicle":
10) Climax Blues Band "Couldn't Get It Right":
11) Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight":
I'm sure this song is obscure for most people, that's a shame. This is one of the greatest songs ever!! 12) C.W. McCall "Convoy":
13) Albert Hammond "It Never Rains In Southern California":
Linda Marie Ronstadt was born July 15th, 1946. She's a great singer that had hits from 1967 all the way through the early 90s. She sang in multiple genres from rock, pop and country. Ms. Ronstadt has recorded and worked with Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash and many others
As always these are a collection of her best songs, not necessarily her biggest hits. Although obviously there's a lot of overlap.
