Lakers Are Done!, Super Bowl Thoughts and Pick

Hello,

I'd like to dedicate the following song to the Lakers and all their delusional fans. It's so cute you guys think this Lakers team is still going to make the playoffs. Seriously in what universe does it make sense for Ron "The Brick" Arrest to have as many shots as Kobe Bryant? Arrest shot 10 3 pointers? Other than seeing the Lakers lose, Lakers haters are happiest when they see Arrest is about to shoot. Dwight Howard is going to play through his injury, did he mean for that to sound like a threat? Does anyone have more whiny faces than the Big Stiffy (Pau Gasol). Gasol is so slow that tortoises are saying to themselves, "Damn the Big Stiffy is slow". Does it make me a bad person that I love to watch the Lakers lose so much?

Good news California: While the Lakers will continue to struggle this season, the 49ers will be bringing home the Super Bowl to California on Sunday. Here are some random Super Bowl thoughts:

1) Obviously Randy Moss isn't the greatest wide receiver of all-time. That title would probably go to another 49er, Jerry Rice.

2) Two weeks between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl is way too long. The media run out of things to talk about. With such an extended break we have stories like Chris Culliver's idiotic anti gay remarks. Stop putting a microphone in the faces of these unknown players. And to make anti gay comments in San Francisco, how dumb is Culliver? This is Culliver's 15 minutes of fame and he can go away now.

3a) I think it would be hilarious if Alex Smith had to be called upon to rescue the 49ers in the Super Bowl. No I'm not hoping that Colin Kaepernick gets hurt or is ineffective, I'd just love to see fellow Ute  Smith come in and rescue the 49ers.

3b) I'll also be keeping an eye on former BYU stud tight end Dennis Pitta. I hope he has a good game in the Ravens loss.

4) The last I heard the over/under on the Super Bowl is 47.5 points. If it was me, I would take the over. Yes, both teams have tremendous defenses. But I think the 49ers could break out and score a lot of points. There have already been a lot of high scoring playoff games so far. The NFC Championship had more points than 47.5 while the AFC Championship had fewer points.

5) Despite new allegations that Ray Lewis is a P.E.D. user, he denies that he is. A line from "Les Mis" comes to mind, "you'd expect that from a con". Lewis has been a great player in the NFL and he'll be missed. However what won't be missed is his celebration routine that draw attention to himself.

6) I hope that Colin Kaepernick scores a lot of touchdowns, however I hope we don't have to see that stupid Kaepernicking celebration. One of the worst celebration routines, as bad as Tebowing and Aaron Rogers lame championship belt routine. I miss the Ickey Shuffle, that showed some thought and was entertaining.

7) Beyonce as the Super Bowl half-time entertainment? That will be a good time to go to the bathroom and check e-mail.

Finally my Super Bowl pick. I predict the 49ers will go 6-0 in this Super Bowl. I predict the 49ers will score about 30 points and win by about 14 points. To be more specific, San Francisco wins 32-18. After cheering for the Cowboys for so many years and them being a disappointment every damn year I've adopted the 49ers as one of my teams. I got sick of following such a mediocre franchise as the Cowboys and wanted a playoff team to cheer for. I'm so excited for this Super Bowl. Thanks 49ers for giving me a team to care about this Super Bowl.

Meanwhile as the 49ers prosper, the Cowboys continue to flounder.

DeMarcus Ware says the Cowboys championship window is closing. Um DeMarcus when did it open? If you can't even make the playoffs, how are you going to win a Super Bowl? This is the kind of delusional thoughts that pass as thinking in Dallas. I'm also sad to say that it's going to be a long time, and probably the death of Jerry Jones, until the Cowboys reach the Super Bowl again. Jones winning those 3 Super Bowls in the early part of his ownership was the worst thing that could have happened to the Cowboys. Although the success had very little to do with him, he thought he was the mastermind and that his way was right. Cowboys fans have been paying for his delusions ever since.

"The Following" Is Good. It's Also Incredibly Freaky!

Hello,

Due to a busy work schedule I wasn't able to watch the second episode of "The Following" until last night. I have to admit I wasn't very impressed with the pilot. It was so unpromising that I almost didn't watch the second episode. However I decided to give "The Following" another chance and I'm glad that I did. Last night's episode "Chapter Two" was a hour of very compelling television.

James Purefoy plays Dr. Joe Carroll, serial killer and leader of the following, a bit too well. Kevin Bacon plays Ryan Hardy, he was the FBI agent that captured Carroll in 2003. Shortly after the Carroll's capture Hardy went on disability and left the FBI. When Carroll escapes prison in 2013, Hardy is called back in to help track down Carroll. Carroll didn't appreciate being captured by Hardy and has recruited the so-called following in an elaborate scheme to exact revenge on Agent Hardy.

Also playing into this storyline is the lovely Natalie Zea, who plays Joe's ex-wife Claire. Following the Carroll's divorce being finalized, Claire and Hardy had a two month relationship. The Carroll's also had a son together Joey. Through the first two episodes of this show Joey is being used as a pawn in a very dangerous game between Joe and Ryan. This is a game that Joe only wants to play.

The lovely Miss Zea:

Some thoughts after the first two episodes:

Carroll's following, or cult, is very scary. The idea that a complete psychotic can have control over seemingly rational people is scary. Carroll is basing the following's belief system on the works of Edgar Allen Poe. Poe was sort of a freaky looking dude, which only adds to spooky factor of this show.

I predict that someone close to the investigation is part of Carroll's following, but who is it? What did that very knowing glance exchanged between Carroll and Agent Parker mean? She's an expert on cults, just how much inside knowledge does she have about Carroll and his cult? Also what was Hardy doing his about 10 years away from the FBI? He wouldn't be a suspect at all due to his past capture of Carroll. But how was he able to capture Carroll in the first place? Is Hardy part of Carroll's following?

Also the scariest thing about this whole idea is that literally anyone could be part of the following. That means you literally can't trust anyone. That's part of the reason that I jumped about 7 times while watching this episode.

I'm not sure why Agent Hardy told Joe that his patsy, Jordy Raines, was still alive. Joe feeds on information. Now that he knows that Raines is still alive, he can have one of his cult kill Raines. Hardy should have kept that information from Joe, they could have interrogated Raines in peace. Also he would have been safer.

After the show was over it took me about a hour to come down from the freakiness of this show.

One of the things that heightens the freak factor is the music. Here are a few of the creepier selections. These aren't the kind of songs you want to hear when checking under your bed 6 times looking for a serial killer.

Sepultara's "Angel:

The Deftones "Change (In The House of Flies):

Band of Skulls is one of the best bands that have come out the last few years. Their song "Close To Nowhere" served as the background music for Ryan and Claire's first kiss:

Then I'll never forgive Marilyn Manson from perverting this great 80's song, but I have to admit that this does fit in too well in with the ambience of "The Following". I purposefully put the lyric video here, so you don't have to look at the freak himself.

Here's Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart's original, they were known as the Eurythmics:

Do I recommend that you watch this show, most definitely. If all the episodes are as good as "Chapter Two", then this will be a great show. However it may not be the best thing to watch the show by yourself. This would be the kind of show you want to watch with a cuddle partner. Also due to how freaky this show is I would reccommend that you not watch it if you have a similar heart condition to Hardy.

One of my favorite movies growing up was the original "Footloose", I'm glad to see Kevin Bacon back in the public eye once again.

Also at grantland.com Andy Greenwald wrote up a very glowing review of fx's "The Americans".  He called it the best new show since "Homeland", which is the best new show I've seen in the last several years. (Dear Showtime, I'm waiting patiently for Season 2 of "Homeland" to go on sale.) Anyway "The Americans" makes it's debut tonight. Due to Greenwald's recommendation I'll be watching "The Americans" tonight. Or I'll record it and watch Lakers-Suns. Hmm.

Are These The 7 Greatest Novels Ever?

Hello,

I've noticed my blog gets a little more traffic than usual when I write about books. So the following is my list of possibly the best five novels ever, followed by a brief thought. This is in no particular order. If you haven't read all these books, you definitely need too.

1) "Jurassic Park"- Michael Crichton Although the movie was decent, it came nowhere to the greatness of the book.

2) "Horns"- Joe Hill This book has a very sweet love story, but you must read all the way to the end.

3) "The Art of Racing In The Rain"- Garth Stein Words can't describe how great this book is. Literally the story of how one should live their life, no matter the consequences. And the book is narrated by a dog.

4) "A Prayer For Owen Meany"- John Irving Owen Meany is a hero, but not your typical hero.

5) "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao"- Junot Diaz This literally could be the best book ever. I loved this book in so many ways. Diaz's constant talk of sex got old pretty quick though. But this is one of those books that shows great writing is still occurring.

6) "My Antonia"- Willa Cather. A book that I only would have read because I was assigned it in a class for school. It's also a book that took me by complete surprise. Quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. A true delight in every way possible. Thanks to my great teacher at the University of Utah for introducing the class to this amazing book.

7)  "The Garden of Last Days"- Andre Dubus Who knew a novel about a stripper, a 9/11 terrorist and white trash Floridian could be so amazing? This is a book not to be missed!

Honorable mention books:

8) A commenter on this blog shared their love for "Ender's Game". While I did very much enjoy "Ender's Game", I've decided it doesn't belong in the 6 greatest books of all-time. But it definitely is worthy of classic novel honorable mention.

"Ender's Game"- Orson Scott Card This definitely is a great book and the movie adaptation is coming soon to your local theatre. One of the things that push this book into the classic area is the amazing ending. That was a great ending.

9) "Snow Falling On Cedars"- David Guterson

I'm sure this list will be expanding as I remember some of the amazing books I've read in my life.

What are some books that you absolutely loved?

Great TV Now!: I Love Alicia Florrick!

Hello,

I had a TV binge a couple weeks ago watching all of Season 1 of "Homeland". If only they'd had the courage to let Damian Lewis' character blow up the bomb he was carrying. That was a bit of a cop out when he didn't.  However I can't wait until I get my hands on Season Two, "Homeland" is such an amazing show.  I've had a couple of busy work weeks. So just the last couple of days, I've got into the swing of catching up on my shows.

The last couple of nights I spent with a couple of old friends, "Blue Bloods" and "The Good Wife". "Blue Bloods" is such an enjoyable show, as long as they don't focus on Jamie's character. He's truly a weak link. The following episode, where they focused on Danny, was a much better show. Danny is both a much better character and played by a much better actor.

"The Good Wife" is such a great show. I love the show's wit and some of the best actors currently working. Great characters, great cast. I do wonder when are they going to make Michael J. Fox a full-time character? Is that why he has bought Lockhart-Gardner's debt? I love his Louis and Alicia's battles. I also love when Alicia uses that great laugh of hers, which usually is mocking someone's stupidity.

I loved "The Good Wife's" latest episode "The Seven Day Rule". I love Alicia starting to show some backbone now. I think she realized that she was being handled by too many people. She's being handled at work, handled by Eli Gold, handled by Louis Canning. But this week she started showing independence. I loved her honesty in declaring she was an atheist. I loved that she did exactly what Diane Lockhart suggested about going and thanking all the equity partners. But it seems Diane realized Alicia wasn't fully engaged in that activity.

The only person she isn't being handled by is her husband and she wants to be handled by him in a physical way lately. It seems their relationship works best when they aren't living together.

Then the show I want to watch the most this year is coming Sunday, The Super Bowl. Go 49ers!! Not only do I have a rooting interest in this game, but I think these are two evenly matched teams. I love the story line about the Harbaugh brothers. Although I couldn't be bored more by Beyonce as the alleged halftime entertainment.

Then on February 8th, "The Walking Dead" is back. I'm so excited! Although again I hope the rest of the season isn't spent having Rick and The Governor battling it out. I would love for that storyline to finish playing out in the next episode. Nearly every show on TV deals with humans battling humans. I watch "The Walking Dead" to watch humans battling zombies!

Lastly and potentially least is the new Fox show "The Following". In spite of having the great Kevin Bacon, I was less than impressed with the pilot episode. The ratings went up for week 2, hopefully the second episode is better then. If it's not a lot better, and a lot more original, I may pull the plug on watching this show very soon.

themusicaddict's Actual Songs From This Millennium

Hello,

If you've ever read this blog, you know my great affection for 80's music. It was the music I grew up and I have so many memories attached to those great 80's songs. However there is still great some great songs being made now. Here are some of my most recent favorites, many of these I discovered from Music Choice.

This is probably my favorite song from the last several years, Eric Church's "Springsteen":

fun.'s "Some Nights":

This is Paramore's new song "Now":

Ellie Goulding's "Anything Could Happen": (This song could desperately use a few more lyrics.)

Bridgit Mendler's "Ready Or Not":

Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away":

Things I Won't Be Writing About Today 1/25/2013: Go Away Manti and Lance

Hello,

1) The first thing I won't be writing about is about two stories that need to go away. I'm tired of the new and daily information coming out about both Manti Te'o and Lance Armstrong. One got catfished and the other cheated at the Tour De France. We get it already, these stories need to die now. The only thing now remaining that could be interesting is that Armstrong was one of the fake voices for Te'o's "girlfriend".

2) Another story that needs to go away is the alleged relevance of the Lakers and if they can still turn this season around. L.A. is officially done, put a fork in them. The Lakers are 17-25 and have lost 10 of their last 12 games. They've never looked good under D'Antoni, he clearly isn't the right coach for this team. Hiring D'Antoni was the wrong decision from the beginning. The sooner the Lakers fire D'Antoni and blow up this roster the best for them. Right now they are further away from ever being a good team. They aren't even going in the right direction.

The Lakers play the Jazz tonight (Go Jazz!). If the Jazz win tonight they'll own a season sweep over the Lakers. That would be great on so many levels. Then they'll lose to the Thunder on Sunday. They next play New Orleans on Tuesday. Starting on Wednesday they go on a 7 game road trip. They play a mix of good and bad teams, but I doubt they'll finish that trip with a winning record. When they come home from that trip with about a 21-31 record, could we all officially stop talking about the Lakers for this
season?

Now for some wise words from the Black Hole himself, Mr. Dwight Howard: "Negativity just got to stop," Howard said after the team's shootaround Friday. "I'm sick of hearing about it. I'm sick of hearing about all the negative stuff. It's a big problem. Negativity is just not good. We got to bring some positivity to this situation, to everybody."

Did he really say "negativity just got to stop"? First of all his, English usage needs work. Second of all the negativity has been rising since he joined the Lakers. That was after his protracted whinefest about if he was going to stay in Orlando after last season. Remember how once he lost interest in last season, he started playing like he didn't care. Then he became injured. How many games is he going to miss this season due to "injury"? Again he's a bum and the Lakers would be wise to cut out this cancer from their team asap.

3) I definitely won't be talking about the Cougars-Bulldogs game last night in Spokane. I only watched a part of that game, but it was so painful. Gonzaga clearly showed that they were the superior team. Meanwhile BYU showed that they have a lot of work to do if they want to be considered a great team. Tyler Haws, who averages 22 points a game, only scored 1 point last night. That's inexcusable!

4) I won't be writing about the big trade the Atlanta Braves pulled off yesterday. Although as a Braves fan I'm excited for next season. With Upton, Upton and Hayward in the outfield this team has both a great present and future. I'm excited to see what happens for the Braves in 2013.

5) I don't know if I'll do it, but I'm considering also following the Dodgers throughout the season as best as I can. I think that would be fun, at least for me. I would still write other blogs during the season. My Dodgers blogs probably won't be that long.

6) Another thing I'm excited about is the upcoming Super Bowl. It so much better when I have a stake in a team playing in the actual game. Although I'll skip the halftime again. Beyonce is boring, is she going to lip sync like she did at President Obama's inauguration? And is Kaepernicking becoming the next boring celebration following Tebowing and Aaron Rogers championship belt?

7) I also won't be writing about "Ripper Street". Thanks to the miracle of On Demand I was able to watch the pilot last night, it was a decent episode. It could become a great show or it could completely go the other way. It reminds me a bit too much of "Copper". Both have detectives as main characters, prostitutes play a big part in both shows and both shows use advanced investigation techniques for the times. Also both are based in roughly the same time period.  The major difference is that "Copper" is based in the USA and "Ripper Street" is based in England.

Now here are some songs that I'm liking now.

This is one of the least appreciated, and funkiest, songs of the 80's. A great song to exercise too. This is "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock:

And here's another song that's in the same vein as above, this is Yello's "Oh Yeah":

The Damn Yankees "Where You Going Now":

Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness":

Adele's "Rumor Has It" (My favorite part starts at the 2:14 mark):

Pink's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)":

themusicaddict: Songs Rocking My World Right Now!

Hello,

I'd like to dedicate this song to Mike D'antoni, whose Lakers are only 12-20 since he became their head coach. The Lakers have been even worse of late, they've lost 10 of their last 12 games. I've been enjoying this so much. However the Lakers are now looking so bad that I'm almost starting to feel sorry for them.

For Mike D'antoni, I'm dedicating Fountains of Wayne "Hackensack". The lyrics that made me think of D'antoni are:

Sometimes I wonder where you are
Probably in L.A.
That seems to be where everybody else ends up these days

But I will wait for you
As long as I need to
And if you ever get back to Hackensack
I'll be here for you

Dedicated to the highly overrated Dwight Howard, who for some reason NBA columnists are still drooling over. Jim Buss you need to trade this bust asap, to at least dump his contract for no other reason.  Do you really want to play almost $20 million to someone who already is on the downside of his career, a bad free throw shooter, constantly injured and is a me first player? Also you then could avoid all his drama this offseason about where he's going to play next season.

I dedicate this song to all fans of Duke, who's butts were kicked last night by the Miami Hurricanes. (I expect Duke to return the favor when Miami visits Cameron Indoor Stadium.) I hate Duke and all their big pasty white guys, so I'm always glad to see them lose.

Drowning Pool's "Bodies":

I dedicate this song to BYU's Men's Basketball Team as they go into Spokane to play the # 10 ranked Bulldogs. Good luck Cougars!

To know the good, we have to know the bad. I was trying to think of a song that I could dedicate to Jerry Jones, only one of the two or three biggest idiots in all of sports. The man who single handedly is taking all the tarnish off once what the once one of the best sports franchises in the world, the Dallas Cowboys. Dedicated to the Metroplex's own "American Idiot":

Now here's the good. To the next Super Bowl champions, the San Francisco 49ers:

Other songs rocking my world, but most without dedications.

Papa Roach's "Last Resort":

Ministry's "New World Order":

I'm dedicating this song to all of those of you who are going through a break up, especially if that break up is a divorce. In my opinion Pearl Jam is the second best band of all-time, because of songs like this. This is "Rearviewmirror", a song of pure catharsis:

Here's some more catharsis from Daughtry, a song that was very instrumental in helping me survive my divorce:

Just keep on saying to yourself:

"Cause the day I thought I'd never get through
I got over you."

Charlie Parker's amazing version of "Summertime":

Eric Carmen's "Make Me Lose Control":

Cobra Starship's butt kicking "Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We Are Famous":

Liz Phair's "Rock Me":

Samantha Fox "I Wanna Have Some Fun": (Yes, this was the best, only, video I could find.)

Another song from the lovely Miss Fox, "Naughty Girls Need Love Too". (Do you think these dancers ever lived down this video with their cheesy dancing?)

Nothing can rock your world more, or be more devastating than a heartfelt ballad. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's "All Cried Out" is one of my favorites.

I'll close with this song, Chaka Khan's "":

Damn Megan Fox is Gorgeous!

Hello and Good Morning!

The Dallas Cowboys Continue To Move To Their Nadir

Hello,

The Dallas Cowboys continue being the dumbest professional sports organization in America. With the unbelievable DWI arrest of Jay Ratliff, the Cowboys continue to move towards their nadir. It shows you the kind of people the Cowboys have by Ratliff's poor decision making. Just a couple of months ago he had a teammate die and another teammate arrested for a DWI incident. But for some reason Ratliff still drives drunk? What the hell? The Cowboys need to not resign Ratliff and move on with character players.

This is just the latest example of why dictatorships are so bad. Jerry Jones and his minions must go! ASAP!

I'm so hoping for a 2-14 Cowboys season next year and that will clear out most of the clutter in the Cowboys organization, including hopefully Idiot Jones.

Congrats To The San Francisco 49ers!, I Love Watching the Lakers Collapse! (Updated 1/22/13)

Hello,

Congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers for making it to the Super Bowl. I'm so excited to have a team to cheer for this year. The last Super Bowl I truly cared about was played on January 26th, 2003. That was when Tampa Bay destroyed Oakland 48-21. The same Super Bowl that provided the answer to who is the most mediocre quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl? The answer: Trent Dilfer. I had a rooting interest in the following Super Bowl as well, I fell in love with that fantastic Panthers defense that year. I've only watched snippets of the last couple of Super Bowls. I'm not sure there could have been a least interesting match up for me than last season's Patriots-Giants game. The only way I'd have had interest in that game is if there was a way both teams could lose. I love football, but those years I was more interested in the commercials than the actual game. I can always catch the best commercials on youtube.

San Francisco shows how to turn a bad team into a great team in a short period of time. It's a complete opposite of how the Cowboys are doing it. Let's review: San Francisco has a real head coach in Jim Harbaugh, a coach that had also won at Stanford. They also have a clutch quarterback in Colin Kaepernick. In his first season in the playoffs he already is 2-0. He already has twice as many playoffs wins as does Tony Romo in his whole career. Finally the 49ers have a non-meddlesome owner. I don't even know who the 49ers owners is!

Meanwhile the Cowboys have a puppet for a head coach. What were his credentials before coming a head coach? He was a backup NFL quarterback and an ineffective offensive coordinator. So obviously he should be a head coach next. What can go wrong? They also have a quarterback that is 1-6 in win or go home situations. He was mediocre as a quarterback and and as an offensive coordinator, obviously he'll make a great head coach. To no one's surprise Garrett is 16-16 as a head coach. Also there's no reason to expect him to do better in the future. You either have it or you don't and he clearly shows he doesn't have it.

Finally the Cowboys have the most meddlesome owner in all of professional sports, plastic surgery's best friend. That's Jerry Jones, the man who not only has to win, but has to win his way. Which is funny, because his way has only won one playoff game in the last 17 years. Jones way isn't even good enough to be considered mediocre.

Here's another stat that's interesting. In the last 12 years, 11 NFC teams have made it to the Super Bowl. Not one of them was the Cowboys. Jerry Jones do you need any more proof that your way isn't working? The Giants have been to the Super Bowl 3 times since the Cowboys last made the Super Bowl.

On a day one California team is returning to the Super Bowl, another California team continues to be terrible. That team is the terrible Lakers. As a certified 100% Lakers hater, I enjoy watching the Lakers collapse game after game. To make things worse they lost to the horrible Raptors. With this victory the Raptors are now 15-26. The Lakers fell to 17-23!

Against the Raptors, Dwight Howard was ejected for arguing calls. At least that's the official story. But with Howard sometimes he just doesn't want to play, he wanted to get kicked out and have the day off. He got his wish. Seriously I just don't understand all the love is for an injury prone, doesn't play hard, attention grabbing malcontent. And the fact that Dwight Howard nicknamed himself Superman is an affront to the fictional character. Come to think of it Howard is sort of a fictional person. A career built on freak athleticism, smoke and mirrors. DC Comics should definitely sue him for nicknaming himself Superman.

I'm sure the Lakers will be chasing hard after Howard to come back after this season. I'm just not sure that's the smart move. Just off the top of my head my feeling is that Howard will command a 5 year, $100 million contract.

I also loved watching Kobe Bryant shooting 10 for 32. Of course you can't blame him, who else on that highly overrated team is going to carry the scoring load? They are clearly a poorly constructed team. I also loved Mike D'Antoni getting so mad during the game last night. He clearly has no idea what he's doing. Will D'Antoni survive this season? The Lakers should give the team back to Bernie Bickerstaff. Yes, I know it's a limited sample size, but I think that was the only time the Lakers actually put fear into anyone. The Lakers made a horrible mistake when they failed to bring Phil Jackson back. In the offseason this team needs to get blown up and get much younger.

Updated 1/22/2013: The Lakers lost to the Chicago Bulls last night to drop to 17-24 at the halfway point of the season. Currently the Lakers are the 12th place team in the Western Conference. They've lost 3 games in a row and have only won 2 of their last 10 games. That means if the playoffs started today the Lakers wouldn't be going. I loved typing that last sentence. Currently the Lakers are 4 games behind the 8th seeded Rockets. I mean what have the Lakers done this year to make people think they are a legitimate playoff team?

Again Dwight Howard was a virtual no-show. He only took 5 shots from the field and finished with 8 free throw attempts. He exploded for 8 points, yeah I'd really want to build my team around Howard. (There really should be a font for when people use sarcasm with the written world.) Of course he was blaming his teammates for not getting more shots, which has some truth to it. Of all the Lakers he shot the sixth most shots. However in the limited time I watched the game he played uninspired again. At one point he was in the lane, right in front of the basket and he brought the ball down low. Even I know you shouldn't bring the ball down low, then you make yourself as small as the guards. He had a guard strip the ball from him. Just another dumb play by Howard. His career will continue to deteriorate until he starts working on the fundamentals. His freak atleticism can get him so far, but he needs to get a lot more down if he wants to be a champion someday. But again I just don't think Howard cares enough, he's just in the NBA for the paycheck.

I also hated the color guy who was calling that game, Steve Kerr?, he sounded like a big Laker homer. The NBA had rescinded Howard's second technical from the previous game, which means he shouldn't have been ejected. The announcer said that essentially cost the Lakers the game against the Raptors. Um, Howard was available all of last game and the Lakers still lost. He also said it robbed the Raptor fans their only chance of the year to see Howard in person. Howard isn't that exciting to watch. I never go to a game of my team, the Jazz, to see another player. The team the Jazz play is secondary.

Kerr? also called Gasol "one of the best big men in the NBA", really? Is that how average the big men in the NBA are? Earlier in the season there were rumors about Gasol possibly being traded to the Jazz. Hell to the no. The Jazz have no need for the Big Stiffy, no need at all. You know that Gasol is going to be traded. Who wants a slow, expensive, old, past his prime nearly one dimensional player? I wouldn't even trade a loaf of bread for him, at least I can get some use out of a loaf of bread.

I also realize why the Lakers get so much publicity, it doesn't matter how good or bad they are. But still even for the Lakers, their coverage seems to be a bit much. Just by comparison I looked up who the 12th place team in the Eastern Conference is. Ironically it's Howard's former team, the Orlando Magic. There seems to be some kind of analogy there, but I'm not sure what it is.

I'll continue to follow the Lakers this season, only to get see how bad they'll finish.

NFC Championship: 49ers-Falcons

Hello,

Today at 3:00pm EST the 49ers-Falcons will battle in the NFC Championship. Atlanta is the # 1 seed and also playing at home. I love even with those two things in their seeming advantage, an ESPN.com poll says that 74% of people predict the 49ers will win. And I couldn't agree more.

I imagine Colin Kaepernick will have a lot harder time of it today. I expect the Falcons have watched the SF-Green Bay tape mulitple times. Kaepernick's runs up the seam probably won't be allowed today. I'm sure that Atlanta will focus on making the 49ers beat them some other way. I have full confidence in Coach Harbaugh in making the right calls today. He's not like the red headed coach in Dallas, who I always expect to fail. Harbaugh always seems to know what he's doing.

Kaepernick isn't the only 49ers weapon. Of course, San Francisco has Frank Gore. If Atlanta takes away Kaepernick maybe that makes things much easier for Gore and the running game. With all their weapons, its easy to forget they also have LaMicheal James in the backfield. Don't forget all of the 49ers great wide receivers. They have Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree and Ted Ginn Jr. Although Crabtree will probably have some leftover residual effect from a sexual assault investigation, although it looks like he won't be charged. I also wish they still had Mario Manningham, one of the heroes of last season's Giants Super Bowl victory. They also have Vernon Davis as one of the most athletic tight ends in the NFL.

I just think Atlanta has too much baggage to overcome to win today. I'm surprised the Falcons got past the Seahawks last week. And they did their best to give it away.

Then for the AFC Championship game, yawn! Come on we all know that the Patriots are going to win and I predict they'll win big.

Meanwhile the Cowboys continue treading water, doing everything they can to ensure another 8-8 season next year. But what else would you expect with Jerry Jones in charge. I wouldn't put him in charge of a kid's kool aid stand.

themusicaddict's Songs I'll Never Tire Of

Hello,

Just a random list of songs that I'll never tire of. These are songs that you've probably heard hundreds of times. However when you are reminded of the song, you can't wait to hear it again. Or if the song comes on the radio you turn it up loud and sing along with. And you just don't care who may notice. Prince's "When Dove Cry" would be featured here, but his videos are locked down from being played properly. I think that's a shame.

From the sax solo at the start of "Careless Whisper", this song just grabs you immediately and doesn't let go. Just one of many of George Michael's great songs. I also love these lyrics:

"I feel so unsureAs I take your hand and lead you to the dance floorAs the music diesSomething in your eyesCalls to mind a silver screenAnd all it's sad goodbyes" (Thanks to metrolyrics.com)

From the great "Pretty In Pink", this is OMD's "If You Leave":

Rihanna is so damn gorgeous.

Rush's "Tom Sawyer":

In spite of this being by Bon Jovi, it's still a classic song. From Tom Cruise to a random "American Idol" contestant this song is just amazing. No matter who sings it, the song demands to be heard.

Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean":

Here are a couple of songs I never get tired of from Depeche Mode. I just love how this first song builds in intensity, "A Pain That I'm Used To":

Some of the greatest relationship advice ever, "Enjoy The Silence":

U2's "With or Without You":

U2's "Red Hill Mining Town":

Midnight Oil's "Beds Are Burning":

Oasis' "Wonderwall":

The first video ever played on MTV is The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star". I'm still waiting up for the follow up song "Snooki Killed The Video Star".

I love the bluesy sexiness of Joan Osborne's "Right Hand Man":

I'm not sure why Judas Priest pretends like this song doesn't exist. It's not even on their two volume Greatest Hits collection. But "United" is the one Judas Priest song I never get tired of.

From Death Cab For Cutie's excellent "Transatlanticism", this is "We Looked Like Giants":

The Heavy "How You Like Me Now":

A couple from Mumford & Sons, first up "Little Lion Man": (language in this song may offend some)

"Babel":

Songs I've got tired of: Pretty much anything by Aersosmith, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing", Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold, Gotye's "Someone I Used To Know",

Season 12 "American Idol" Is A Train Wreck, Great 80's songs

Hello,

Season 12 of the bloated reality TV series known as "American Idol" debuted last night. Thankfully I didn't have the misfortune to watch it. But just reading the comments on ew.com, the show has clearly turned into a train wreck. I'm actually tempted to watch it now, just to see how bad it is.

Ever sense the show has focused on the judges, "AI" has gone downhill. Jennifer Lopez got people's attention because she's so gorgeous. People give her a chance before eventually tuning out. But Steven Tyler, a person that has turned into a parody of himself, who cares what he thinks? Those two left and Fox muffed it's chance to return the focus to the contestants. They went out and got two divas to juice the show's flagging ratings.  Some idiot at Fox thought it would be a good idea to pay Mariah Carey $18 million to be a judge this season. Great singer, but I could care less what she has to say.

Before I stopped watching "American Idol" I tuned in to watch unknown singers grow as the season goes along. Not only the Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson superstar contestants either. I loved Alexis Grace, Megan Joy, Miranda and still follow them to see what they are doing now.

Instead Fox in their infinite wisdom decided to increase the drama factor in a desperate attempt to get people to watch this season. But again after one night the reviews are withering. The following is from Fox's person in charge of their "reality" TV. If you want to learn how to speak in corporate bs, he's the main to show you the way.

“The needle is not moved by the name of the judge but how they perform on the show,” Darnell concludes. “And these guys are performing incredible. Some years you don’t have anything to talk about it. Sometimes you have a lot of word of mouth and I think that’s what’s going on. You can feel it. There’s a lot of buzz in the air.”

Who exactly is performing incredible? He talks about word of mouth. That's true there's a lot of word of mouth about the arguments between Carey and Nicki Minaj. The show doesn't even pretend to be about the singers any more. The producers are so desperate to keep this show relevant, that they've created this fake drama between the two divas. Don't give into Fox's desperate attempt to keep this show on the air.

I also have to laugh when Darnell says there's a lot of buzz in the year. Um Mike, yes there's a lot of buzz. Too bad all the buzz is bad. The show continues to shed viewers by the millions. And after only one night of season 12, they've alienated many of their few remaining ardent fans. Again I hope the ratings are so bad that they have to cancel this show in the middle of the season.

Sadly reality TV shows seem to be alive and well, but the singing shows are clearly on the way out.

Yesterday I wrote about 3 radio stations in the local Salt Lake area that play a bunch of 80s songs. The stations are Rewind 100.7, KBER 100.1 and Rock 103.5 The Arrow. I have all three radio stations next to each other on my car stereo presets. Obviously they played a lot more songs at night. In the morning the radio stations feature a lot of talk. Jon Carter and Bob and Tom or music? Which would I rather listen to? Please!

Anyway here's some of the songs I heard to and from work the last couple of days. One song I heard is my favorite Eddie Money song, which features fantastic guest Roni Spector. Of course it's "Take Me Home Tonight":

They also played this Eddie Money classic:

They also played two classics from Huey Lewis and The News. From one of the best movies ever "Back To The Future", this is "The Power of Love":

Also played was the song that introduced America to Huey Lewis and the News. "Do You Believe In Love":

Also a song that almost literally I can't get sick of, Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2":

From one of my favorite movies ever, the original "Footloose". Also it has one of the best soundtracks ever. This is Kenny Loggins "Footloose":

An 80's band in my opinion that didn't get enough love is "Lovin' Every Minute Of It":

They also played The Mighty Zep's "Fool In The Rain", STP's "Plush" and BEP's "Let's Get It Started".

"American Idol" Is Back Tonight: Can This Please Be The Last Season?

Hello,

The greedy folks over at Fox are rolling out the 12th edition of this very tired reality show. I would love for the ratings to be so bad that they had to cancel the show during the season. That would be priceless. I'll not be watching this show, unless I happen to pass it by while switching channels.

"American Idol" jumped the shark after the 7th season, David Cook winning should have closed down this show. In a ridiculous attempt to remain relevant the show has changed the judging panel multiple times. From adding Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Ellen DeGeneres and now all the new judges for this season. And they also have kept Randy Jackson for all 12 seasons, which makes absolutely no sense to me. How a man who has done so little can keep his job for 12 years puzzles me.

According to rollingstone.com these are five reasons to watch "American Idol". All bold is cut and pasted from the original rs.com article.

1. The Judges
"Joining the panel of judges this year are Mariah Carey, a/k/a the best-selling female recording artist of all time. rapper Nicki Minaj and four-time Grammy winner Keith Urban. The only holdover is Idol mainstay Randy Jackson – who lingers along with host Ryan Seacrest." (I love the they used the word lingers to refer to Randy Jackson. However no one will ever top it than the Fox executive who referred to Jackson as a "barnacle". Never have more unintentionally truthful words ever been spoken by a corporate America schill.)
"The straight-talking Minaj – who was encouraged to take the job by none other than Lil Wayne, apparently – will be filling the long-vacant Simon Cowell role on Idol, cutting through the BS and telling it like it is to contestants. On the other side of the musical spectrum, Urban will provide much-needed cred to the show when it comes to critiquing the country performers."
Minaj, Carey and Urban: Yawn. And we already know how bad Randy Jackson is. Plus I'm sick of seeing Ryan Seacrest's face all over TV. If I were him I'd be spending as much time with Julianne Hough as I could.
2. The Fireworks
"The battles between Carey and Minaj have already livened up the normally staid Idol audition rounds. Last October, while Idol was in Charlotte, North Carolina, Minaj threatened to "knock out" Carey during a taping."
The only thing worse than drama is fake, manufactured "Idol" drama. Especially when Carey blathers on about hiring additional security. Please. People who want to see a lot of this kind of fake drama can watch anyone of the way too many stupid reality shows on TV.
3. Bigger and Better Auditions
Expect that to change this season when Idol goes where they have never gone before: to small towns in search of talent. "We've actually taken a bus, an American Idol bus, out to little towns this year and with a producer onboard, who has brought kids into the audition – kids that wouldn't necessarily be either close enough to one of the cities we were at or even have the financial means to get to one of the big cities. So that introduced new talent to us, I must say."
This season, people were able to nominate talented friends and family who were too nervous or intimidated to audition. The show then sent a team to stage an audition intervention. "Randy Jackson actually went out, and we did some hidden camera stuff, and shocked them and surprised them and then gave them a number – an audition number – so that they actually skipped the lines and everything and came straight in to see the judges," Lythgoe explained.
These ideas actually seem to be okay.
4. Big Changes During Hollywood Week
" This season, when the Top 10 finalists are chosen, that's it. Come Hollywood Week, the contestants will be divided up by gender. "We split the weeks up and gave a week to the boys, then a week to the girls," Lythgoe said. When the contestants head to Las Vegas, expect a similar split, which Lythgoe felt helped the judges divine the true talent among the contestants."
Seriously Lythgoe is such a tool, I wouldn't let him produce anything. Like Jackson he's a Fox yes man, which is how he can keep his job.
5.  Idol Delivers Results
From Kelly Clarkson to Phillip Phillips, Idol has a proven track record of creating bankable, chart-topping, Grammy-winning stars.
When they say bankable stars who exactly are they talking about? It's true that they bust out Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry. But who else has exploded on to the scene for longer than two years. Absolutely no one! Now "AI" has broken other singers into the mainstream, people like Jennifer Hudson and the gorgeous Katherine McPhee.

How Many Sort of 80's Radio Stations Can Salt Lake City Support?

Hello,

I usually listen to sports radio when driving, but I decided to mix it up a bit last night. I didn't want to listen to a bunch of irrelevant DJ blather or commercials so I flipped from channel to channel. In doing so I realized that there are at least 3 basically 80's stations in the Salt Lake valley. I like having all 3, but I wonder how long all three will survive.

1) The first is Rewind 100.7, it's been using this format for probably about two years. They mostly play 80's songs, but mix in more recent songs occasionally. I actually like that format as that led to this two song combination last night, which I thought was genius. First they played this song:

Then they followed that up with:

As of this morning, these are the last 5 songs Rewind 100.7 played:

Last 5 Songs Played
Artist: ELTON JOHN (70s)
Title: CROCODILE ROCK

Artist: TOTO (70s)
Title: HOLD THE LINE

Artist: Lumineers (10s)
Title: Ho Hey

Artist: B-52'S (80s)
Title: LOVE SHACK

Artist: RICKY MARTIN (90s)
Title: LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCA

Other songs played by Rewind 100.7:
"Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone": Glass Tiger (80s)
"Shine"- Collective Soul (90s)
"Hot or Cold"- Katy Perry (2000s) (I'm so tired of this song.)
"In Your Eyes"- Peter Gabriel (I don't think it's possible to get tired of this song or "Sledgehammer".)

Next up is KBER. They play a lot of 80's song, but those are mostly with a rock edge.

From their own list and from me listening to the radio randomly this morning after 10:00am. (Drive time radio is the worst.) The number in the parenthesis is generally the decade the music was released. If I make a mistake please forgive me. This is some of the songs they played today:

"Dude (Looks Like A Lady)": Aerosmith (80s)
"Paranoid"- Black Sabbath (70s)
"Let's Ride": Kid Rock (2000's) Never heard this song and since it's Kid Rock, I never want to hear it. It's a travesty what he did to the Skynnrd song.
"Too Late For Love"- Def Leppard (80s)
"TNT"- AC/DC (70s)
"Creep"- Stone Temple Pilots (90s)
"(Oh) Pretty Woman"- Van Halen (80s)
