Hello,
This choice might surprise some people. I'll admit this isn't someone I've been very impressed with since his "AI" run. However Ace Young sings this song very well and it's just a great song:
Here's one of the Blues masters: Muddy Waters and his classic "Hoochie Coochie Man":
Here's another Muddy Waters song, just because he's the man. This was the video with the best sound, no comment on the pictures.
The latest #1 record on Billboard's chart set a new record. Since SoundScan technology debuted for Billboard's chart data in 1991, we have a new record breaker. Unfortunately it's not the kind of sales record that anyone wants. It's the lowest selling #1 CD since 1991 and the debut of SoundScan. Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" only sold 40,000 copies in it's first week at #1. Compare that to Taylor Swift's last CD, "Speak Now", which sold 1,047,000 copies in it's first week last fall. January is traditionally a slow month for CD sales. But I don't think that's the only thing to blame for week sales.
We also have major record companies that are completely out of touch with the modern day music buyer. Notice I didn't say CD buyer. Now there's just so many ways to buy music. Also there's so many ways to get music free. I would also say the unfamiliarity by most people with Amos Lee and the other chart toppers doesn't help either. The following list is the artist, CD title and copies sold last week.
No. 1 – Amos Lee, Mission Bell: 40,000
No. 2 – Iron and Wine, Kiss Each Other Clean: 39,000
No. 3 – Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday: 38,000
No. 4 – 2011 Grammy Nominees compilation: 38,000
No. 5 – Bruno Mars, Doo-Wops & Hooligans: 33,000
Now I know that Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars have been popular, but hasn't that been mostly for working on other people's CDs? Then you have Amos Lee and Iron and Wine, two journeyman troubadours. Can you name a song either sings? Either can I. Then I'm not sure who buys the Grammy Nominees compilations. I usually have all the songs that I want from that CD already. Don't you?
Also after having the lame Lil Wayne on the cover of the last issue of Rolling Stone, they've now gone the other direction. The new cover subject is Elton John. I have no complaints about Elton John, other than when did he release his last relevant music? Lil Wayne was probably pretty young when that happened. But Elton John is one of the all time greats, there's no denying that. Although he isn't on my Top 50 all time artists. Now Rolling Stone if you can get someone that's both good and currently relevant. For instance, James Blunt has a new CD out. How about Lea Michelle, an attractive woman with that amazing voice?
