Hello,
Kids today will never understand the impact that MTV had on pop culture of the early 80s. It was part of a broader phenomena called cable TV. At the time we were basically expanding from just a few channels to a whole lot more. There were some shows that showed music videos, but no more than a few hours a day. MTV was truly ground breaking, showing music videos 24 hours day. Like a bright light in a dark space MTV brought music into our front rooms.
I spent many a hour, especially during the summer, watching MTV. It was quite easily to while away an afternoon watching MTV. Even though there were dozens of other channels a lot of those didn't have much programming. All MTV needed was videos. Once it broke out and people started becoming famous then people happily provided their own programming (videos).
The stars of the first few days of MTV were Rod Stewart, April Wine, Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, Styx and The Pretenders. As much as possible I posted the original video that played 40 years ago.
The first couple of hours of Day 1 of MTV:
8) April Wine "Just Between You and Me":
9) REO Speedwagon "Keep On Loving You":
10) Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight":
11) Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around":
12) Rod Stewart "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy":
13) Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street":
14) Styx "The Best Of Times":
15) Blotto "I Wanna Be A Lifeguard":
16) Rod Stewart "Passion":
17) REO Speedwagon "Don't Let Him Go":
