BYU Looks Atrocious, Jake Heaps looks mediocre and The Pac 12 continues to be exposed

Hello,

I just finished watching the very boring, terribly played game between BYU-Ole Miss. BYU won but I'm still not sure how. They didn't deserve to win, but then again Ole Miss didn't either. Jake Heaps looked very average. I really thought he had shown he was going to be a great quarterback at the end of last season. However he didn't show that same moxie and confidence today. Heaps was 23 for 37 for 224 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. If that stat line looks familiar to you it's because it's a very Tony Romoesque stat line. It doesn't tell an accurate tell of how uncertain and out of sorts Jake Heaps looked today.

Things get harder for BYU next weekend as they travel to Texas to play the Longhorns. Texas only finished 5-7 last season and I'm sure they want to show that sort of a season is the exception. I'm sure they'll be playing with a chip on their shoulder all season. How disconcerting is it to see Texas not in the Preseason Top 25. Texas will destroy Rice tonight as they tune up for BYU.

It's only one game, and it was a victory, so I'm not going to go overboard. However for BYU I see this more as a rebuilding season. Other than Utah, BYU doesn't play anyone decent at home this season. They have a much tougher road schedule and I predict that's where the majority of their losses will come from. Even with a so so team, BYU will probably get 8 wins this season. That's more of a sign of their weak schedule than them being a great football team. With so many players coming back next year, I think next year will be a much better year for BYU.

The Pac 12 hasn't had a very good opening weekend. Utah looked meh in beating the D2 Montana State team. USC beat Minnesota at the Coliseum today 19-17. But they didn't look very good as the game wound to the end. Let's hope both Utah and USC play a lot better next week or their game may be as bad as BYU-Ole Miss was today.

Neither one of those wins was especially impressive for USC or Utah, but at least they won. Two other Pac 12 teams didn't represent their league very well. UCLA continues to under achieve as the Rick Neuheisel era winds to it's inevitable close. They lost to Houston tonight 38-34. But in the most embarrassing game for the Pac 12 today, Oregon State lost at home in over time to Sacramento State? Sacramento State? Just where is the state of Sacramento anyway? I'd never heard of Sacramento State before, they are proud members of the Big Sky Conference. That's the home of other football heavyweights like Weber St., Eastern Washington and those powerful Montana State Grizzlies.

Later tonight Arizona plays Northern Arizona. Also Pac 12 afterthought Colorado plays at Hawaii tonight. It shouldn't be a big surprise when Hawaii wins that game.Currently in one of the two big national games of the night LSU is battling Oregon. There's no shame if Oregon loses this game, but a win would add some much needed shine to this conference. Shine that has been taken away by the losses of UCLA and Oregon State. Also playing now is California vs. Fresno State. the Bears have a 5 point lead and possession. And at the start of the third quarter Washington leads Eastern Washington 20-13.

Besides horrific losses by Oregon State and UCLA, other Pac 12 teams also played earlier. On Thursday night ASU knocked off UC Davis 48-14. At least I've heard of UC Davis, but no one will ever confuse them for a football powerhouse. Continuing the Pac 12's tour of the Little Sisters of the Poor conference Washington State beat Idaho State 64-21. And in embarrassing fashion Stanford beat SJSU 57-3. SJSU is one of the many cream puffs BYU will play this year. Again I know these big blowouts are a part of modern college football. It's a way to draw attention to your team for the BCS bull crap that we have so suffer through.

It's time to go to a playoff for college football.
