Before I get to this weekend's amazing slate of football games, I have to mock the Pac 12 yet again. This alleged tough football league suffered another embarrassing loss last night. The Arizona Mildcats traveled to Oklahoma to get their butts kicked by #9 Oklahoma State. True OSU is probably the better team, but shouldn't a BCS conference represent itself better than losing by 23 points?
Tonight Arizona State welcomes #21 Missouri. ASU playing at home negates the weak excuse of Missouri being a ranked team. The Pac 12 needs to win a game out of conference against a tough opponent. Oregon, Arizona have already failed. No Duke, Montana State, Minnesota and San Jose State don't count as tough opponents. I'm glad the Pac 12 is playing conference games soon so that they'll get some wins.
Oregon State plays at #8 Wisconsin also on Saturday. Normally I would write let the excuses begin. But no one seriously thinks OSU has a chance against Wisconsin on the road. Especially since they can't beat D2 Sacramento State at home. Let's home UCLA can get past San Jose State at home. If UCLA loses that game, Rick Neuheisel (spell check suggests nauseously as the correct spelling.) shouldn't just get fired immediately. He should also get taken out and shot.
There are some amazing college football games this weekend. To me the three biggest games all kick off about the same time Saturday. All times are MST, hey that's because where I live. BYU travels to Texas to play the Longhorns at 5:00pm. I just hope BYU's defense keeps it close, because BYU's defense could have a long day against the Texas defense.
Then at 5:30pm Utah plays the proud Trojans in the Coliseum. 6 words that should put fright into any Ute fan. (I am an Ute alumni but have been cheering for USC since the Reggie Bush era.) Those words are Matt Barkley, Robert Woods and Marc Tyler. If Tyler's name doesn't ring a bell, that's because he was suspended last week. Tyler might be USC's best running back. Two words that shouldn't put any fear into Utah fans: Lane Kiffin. (Spell check suggests such words as buffing, coffin and muffin as potential correct spellings. That's hilarious and appropriate.) I just don't have a lot of faith in his coaching ability.
Then finally the over rated Notre Dame Fighting Irish travel to play Michigan. This is Michigan's first night game ever at the Big House. While I'm not a big Michigan fan, I hope they destroy Notre Dame. If that happens the Irish would would fall to 0-2 on the season. Then ESPN et al. can we please stop talking about the Irish as a legitimate team. It drives me crazy that they have done so little recently but have such an out size reputation. Since 1997 Notre Dame is a respectable 99-73, but not as amazing as a record as you would expect. In the same period they are 2-7 in bowl games.
