Will the Dallas Cowboys ever be relevant again?

Hello,

Yesterday I wrote a blog about Tony Romo's complete and utter choke against the Jets Sunday night. My solution, as it has been for the last few years, is to get rid of him asap. After 6 years as a mediocre starting quarterback it's not like he's going to figure out how to be a great quarterback all of a sudden. As I was writing that blog I noticed that one year, to the day, I wrote a blog begging Jerry Jones to get rid of Wade Phillips. Since Jerry Jones desperately wants to be seen as a football genius, he likes to hold on to some people for too long in hopes they turn it around. If they turn it around then Jones looks like a genius. However Jones usually tends to hang on to those players or coaches too long. The once proud Cowboys limped to a 1-7 record before Phillips finally got fired. I'm afraid we are seeing the exact same thing with Tony Romo. He's signed through the 2013 season, signing his current contract in 2007. Romo signed a 6 year, 67.5 million contract, $30 million of that money is guaranteed. He signed the contract right before Halloween, how appropriate for Cowboys fans.

That means if Romo continues to falter, which he will, the Cowboys can cut him without paying him all that money. Jones is very stubborn so he'll probably stick with Tony Romo throughout the rest of this season. Please Jerry if Romo doesn't at least win 1 playoff game this season, it's time to let him go. Even if the Cowboys keep him next season it's still time to start building for the future. After watching the slow Drew Bledsoe for too long, many of us Cowboys fans fell in love with Romo. However he's like a bad girlfriend now that keeps on coming back. Every time we think she's going to stay, she breaks our hearts again. Tony Romo was destined to be a very solid backup quarterback, until by the comparison to Bledsoe he was prematurely anointed as a great starting quarterback. It seems the same hype might be working against the extremely fragile Dez Bryant now.

Cowboys chief apologist, Jerry Jones called Romo's game on Sunday "one of the best games I've ever seen him play". I would agree with Jerry on that. He actually had me fooled through the first three quarters that he was a legitimate starting NFL quarterback. Too bad he reverted to form in the 4th quarter. Romo did play a great game, but it's those menial errors in the 4th quarter that continues to haunt him and Cowboys fans. It's time to end the Romo era, no later than the end of this season.

In Utah we are gearing up for the big BYU-U. of U. rivalry game this Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. You are probably wondering if it's a rivalry game why is it being played so early in the season. It's because for the first time in many years they aren't in the same conference. Last year the Utes and Cougars were in the MWC, which is now known as the Titantic league. Why, because the rats are fleeing the rapidly sinking ship. I had to laugh at some of the pathetic games the MWC was trying to scam people into watching this last weekend. Raise your hand if any of you watched the exciting Washington State 59-7 beat down of UNLV. How about Wyoming's thrilling 45-10 victory over Texas State? (OSU, they aren't to be confused with the other powerhouse State team, Sacramento State.) Well I'm sure if you didn't catch either one of those games of course you watched Arkansas blitz New Mexico 52-3. New Mexico is probably the worst D1 team in the nation.

The MWC does have two pretty good teams this year. Boise State and TCU, although it looks like it might be a down year for TCU. After this years athletic schedule TCU joins the other rats leaving the MWC. They'll be in the Big East then, not exactly known as a power conference either. At that point if the MWC is still in existence, it should be known as Boise State and the dwarves.

The Utes have joined the PAC 12 and BYU has gone independent.

A local sports station was asking the question yesterday what about your team makes you confident that they will win this week? And honestly my answer was nothing. I think both the Utes and Cougars are fairly equal at this point. Both teams seem to have the exact same strength, defense. Both quarterbacks came into the season with a lot of hype, however neither quarterback has come close to playing to their potential. Jake Heaps is looking Tony Romoesque right about now. However since he's only a sophomore I'm still giving him a bit of time. This past Saturday was the first time that I watched a lot of Ute quarterback Jordan Wynn play. I was surprised by how ugly his passes are, he throws a lot of ducks. Neither quarterback should be brimming with a lot of confidence at this point. Neither quarterback is stepping up with his actions to say how good they are.

To further answer the radio stations question, I would give the Cougars the slight edge. That's simply because they are playing at home.

Also I hated having the Utah-USC, BYU-Texas and Michigan-Notre Dame games at about the same time Saturday. Again USC did just enough to win, thanks to their bruising defense and special teams. During the Lane Kiffin era the Trojans haven't been known for their fourth quarter success. I would have a lot more hope for USC if they had a real coach on their sideline. Seeing him on the sidelines, it seems the lights are on but no one is home.

Then for the Cougars the Texas game was one of those woulda, shoulda, coulda games. They were just a couple of plays away from being 2-0 on the season. But give Texas credit they made the plays that won the game.

The Michigan game ended up being the most exciting of the 3 games with Denard Robinson leading Michigan to a comeback victory. Notre Dame starts out this season at 0-2. As I posted at espn.com watching the Irish lose is almost as good as watching my teams win. I love that the over rated Irish again fail to live up to their pre season hype again. Of course the hype wasn't deserved, which is why it's called hype. The Irish simply aren't good enough, don't have a good enough coach and play too brutal a schedule to be playing for National Championships.

Notre Dame could slip to 0-3 as #15 Michigan State travel to North Bend this Saturday. It will be a long season for Notre Dame this year. Is it too much to ask that they lose all their games this year? Probably so, but I would enjoy a below .500 season. With them playing Purdue, Navy and Air Force this season they should get 3 wins this season.
