(Finished January 30th, 2022) Part 2 of The Best Songs of 1968 to 1970

Hello,

I watched another episode of "For All Mankind" tonight. It's set in the late 60s-early 70s and some of those songs are just so good. I wanted to trip the light fantastic on this series of blogs from the songs of those years.

In some ways those songs seem so innocent, but hiding a darker truth underneath. It feels like there's a big societal change coming. That darker undercurrent was seen with the student protests of Vietnam, the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots and the chaos at the Altamont Rolling Stones concert. But also we had the mostly peaceful Woodstock concert and of course the moon landings, which seemed to bring Americans together. It certainly was an interesting time.

18) Manfred Mann "The Mighty Quinn":

19) Frank Sinatra "My Way":

20) Neil Diamond "Sweet Caroline":

21) Steppenwolf "Born To Be Wild":

What a pretty song. 22) Henry Mancini "Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet":

23) Gary Puckett and Union Gap "Young Girl":

24) Zager and Evans "In The Year 2525":

25) Neil Young "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere":

26) B.B. King "The Thrill Is Gone":

Bonus video: B.B. King featuring Tracy Chapman "The Thrill Is Gone":

27) Ventures "Hawaii Five-O Theme":

28) Simon and Garfunkel "Mrs. Robinson":

29) The Beatles "Revolution":

30) Simon and Garfunkel "The Boxer":

31) Dionne Warwick "Do You Know The Way To San Jose":

32) Stevie Wonder "For Once In My Life":

33) The Rolling Stones "Street Fighting Man":

34) B.J. Thomas "Raindrops Falling On My Head":

(Finished January 27th, 2022) Part 4 of Oh What Memories: Quirky and Fun Songs of the 80s

Hello,

What is obscure? I guess that would be any song that you might not be familiar with. For instance I've heard Madonna's "Like A Prayer" hundreds of times. It has been in commercial etc, but it still might be obscure to you. Even some songs on here by big named artists are obscure to me. To paraphrase I guess obscurity is in the ear of the beholder.

So here they are the fun, the quirky and a few heartfelt songs as well.

59) Tracy Chapman "Baby Can I Hold You":

60) The Jo Boxers "Just Got Lucky":

61) Camouflage "The Great Commandment":

"A humiliating kick in the crotch". 62) The Police "Synchronicity 2":

63) Gap Band "You Dropped A Bomb On Me":

64) Kenny Loggins featuring Steve Perry "Don't Fight It":

65) Dead Milkmen "Punk Rock Girl":

For some reason one of the most hated songs of the 80s, but I love this song. Almost 100 million You Tube views can't be wrong, can they? 66) Starship "We Built This City":

67) Modern English "I Melt With You":

68) New Order "Bizarre Love Triangle" (Extended):

69) Real Life "Send Me An Angel":

70) Warrant "Cherry Pie":

(Finished January 26th, 2022) My Tool Dream Setlist

Hello,

Last night I went with my friend to see Tool at the Maverick Center in West Valley, Utah. Their setlist was highlighted by "Opiate", "Right In Two", "The Pot" and "Pneuma".  They put on a very good show, the musicianship was amazing and Maynard was in great voice. Maynard was even making jokes- who knew he had a sense-of-humor? But this Tool show to me was not about the songs they played, but it's more about the songs that they didn't play. This is my Tool dream setlist.

"Pneuma":

1) "Forty-Six and 2":

2) "H.":

3) "Ticks and Leeches":

4) "Hush":

5) "The Pot":

6) "Chocolate Chip Trip":

Intermission

I was disappointed that Tool didn't play one song from their best CD, "Undertow" last night. In my dream setlist they would play the entire disc straight through minus all the weird stuff that comes after the main part of "Disgustipated". Of course this being Tool and Maynard they would play the songs in backward order. That's fine as that might be better. 7) "Intolerance":

8) Prison Sex":

9) "Sober":

10) "Bottom":

11) "Crawl Away":

12) "Swamp Song":

13) "Undertow":

14) "4 Degrees":

15) "Flood":

16) ) Disgustipated":

Encore:

17) "Stinkfist":

18) "Opiate":

(Finished January 24th 2022) Part 1 of Sleazy and/or Crunchy Rock

Hello,

Inspired by the first episode of "Peacemaker" and it's mid-level hair metal soundtrack I wanted to post a blog about crunchy and sleazy rock songs. I found quite a few songs from Leighton and Tracey Stead's 80's and 90's Glam Sleaze and Rock 'N Roll YouTube collection of videos.

As for the "Peacemaker" show there's a lot of language and sexual storylines. I was less than impressed by the first episode.

In honor of the big man's passing a couple of days ago I'm going to start off with two of Meat Loaf's crunchier rock songs. 1) "Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are":

2) "Life Is A Lemon and I Want My Money Back":

3) Silverchair "Tomorrow":

4) Midnight Oil "Beds Are Burning":

I had completely forgotten this song. 5) Green Jelly "Three Little Pigs":

6) Poison "Flesh and Blood (Sacrifice)":

(Finished October 5th, 2022) Part 3 of "1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything", The Best of 1971

Hello,

I have no connection to the Apple series "1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything". However I started watching the 8 episode season tonight and reliving all that history and great music. I'll use this series as an inspiration for this blog. 1971 was a weird year in many away. One of the biggest artists of that year was The Osmonds. I was only 4 that year so I didn't have an opinion, but my opinion I'm sure would not have been that high. Looking back now I'm still shocked. How did a bunch of white Utah Mormon boys be in the same league as Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin and many others?

18) "Wasted Youth":

19) "Out of the Frying Pan

20) "All Revved Up and Nowhere To Go":

21) "Not A Dry Eye In The House":

Hello,

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

What is obscure? I guess that would be any thing that you might not be familiar with. For instance I've heard The Knack's "My Sharona" many times, and it has been in movies etc, but it might be obscure to you. Even some songs on here by big named artists are obscure to me. (Finished January 17th, 2022) Tool Setlist October 18th, 2019 in Salt Lake City

Hello,

With it being 8 days away from me seeing Tool, I wanted to go back and review a previous Salt Lake tour stop. This is their setlist for their concert at The Vivint Smart Home Arena, aka The Viv. This concert was on October 18th, 2019. At that point no one had any idea what was coming right around the corner, Covid-19. One of the most disruptive things for the music industry, and just about everything else, we've faced.

1) "Fear Innocolum":

2) "Ænema":

Same song with a lot better sound:

3) "The Pot":

The Guitar Historian's look at the best albums of 1971:

Songs That Shaped 1971 (Part 1):

23) Cat Stevens "Moonshadow":

24) Cat Stevens "Morning Has Broken":

25) Cat Stevens "Wild World":

26) Bread "Baby I'm A Want You":

27) Bread "If":

28) Bread "Let Your Love Go":

The most shocking music superstars of 1971: The Osmonds. 29) Donny Osmond "Go Away Little Girl":

One of the many amazing albums of 1971 was Carole King's career defining "Tapestry". It has several amazing songs on it. Here are a few of them. 30) Carole King "It's Too Late":

31) Carole King "I Feel The Earth Move":

32) Carole King "So Far Away":

Carole King wrote this classic with Gerry Goffin, then the Shirelles took it and made it into a # 1 hit in 1960. Then Miss King took the classic, slowed it down and released it on her "Tapestry". 33) "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow":

34) Carole King "Tapestry":

Obviously a very good version but not as good as Aretha's version, but I like Miss King's cover or her own co-written song. 35) Carole King "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman":

36) Carole King "Smackwater Jack":

37) James Taylor "You've Got A Friend":

Amazing enough this song isn't written by Carole King, but no it was written by Mr. Paul Anka.
38) Tom Jones "She's A Lady":

39) Lynn Anderson "Rose Garden":
