Hello,
To absolutely no one's surprise, Jason Garrett was named to be the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Does this surprise anyone and if it does, why? Jones, complying with the so-called Rooney Rule, interviewed two minority candidates. Does those two candidates really have a shot at the head coach position. NO! Although both had solid interviews.
Jones has given Jason Garrett final approval on all assistant coaches and players. However that isn't in the contract. Does anyone really believe the meddling, egomaniac Jones won't step in at some point? I do wish he will stay out of the way. He needs to disappear from the public eye for awhile. He might be one of the few people that desire the limelight as much as Brett Favre.
The Dallas Cowboys felt a bit rushed, Jones says he had a few requests to interview Garrett for other teams head coaching positions. While that may be true, did Dallas really need to rush? I would say no, if Garrett went somewhere else that would have been fine. Although I believe that ultimately Jones made the right choice.
My other question: why did Jones sign Garrett to such a long contract? Garrett had one more year on his current contract, but Jones signed him to 3 years beyond that. Why? It's the usual policy to sign a proven head coach to a long term contract, that's something the head coach usually demands. However Garrett isn't proven at all, sure he looks good compared to Wade Phillips. I say Jones should have given Garrett two years and then reevaluate at that time.
I'm just afraid we are going to have the same contract situation that was with Wade Phillips. Phillips was the head coach when Dallas won its first playoff game in 11 years. Although the Cowboys got destroyed the week after, Jones signed Phillips to a 2 year extension. The stupidity of that contract was quickly shown when the Cowboys started off this season 1-7. I just wish Jones would have signed Garrett to a shorter contract.

Garrett is the 8th head coach, hopefully he will be the first good head coach in several years. The last good head coach Dallas had was Jimmy Johnson, responsible for 3 Super Bowl victories. Yes, I know that officially Barry Switzer was the the head on one of those Super Bowls, but it was Johnson's player. Switzer was smart enough to stay out of the way.
