BYU Basketball, Lady Gaga: Is She The Antichrist?

Hello,

Let's start out with the under appreciated songs of the day, before getting to everything else. This song and performance of "The Way We Were" is so amazing. The song is great and fits perfectly the movie it comes from. On youtube.com, this song has over 400 dislikes. Really? This is one of the most emotional songs ever sung by the amazing Barbara Streisand. How can you not like this?

This is also another simply amazing song. One of the many amazing songs written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Another fantastic singer, Sarah Brightman, singing "Tell Me On A Sunday". If I ever meet a lady and she gets sick of me, this is the way I'd want to hear the news. Also I would ask for no drama, as suggested in this song. Also please don't know give me the "let's be friends" speech.

Rolling Stone has announced their new cover and it's Snooki from "Jersey Shore". Has Rolling Stone really stooped this low now? This continues the recent run of terrible cover stories by what use to be an amazing magazine. I know old rockers probably don't sell as many copies as crappy reality TV stars, but seriously Snookie? I proudly don't know how to spell her name and also have never seen a minute of the show. The crap that passes as entertainment now days is unbelievable.

Recent Rolling Stone covers have featured such pop culture lightweights as Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne (twice), Jimmy Fallon, Eminem, Conan O'Brien, John Mayer and Russell Brand. I would just like to add O'Brien's "Heartbreak Warfare" is one of the biggest pieces of crap in several years. I had the misfortune of hearing it on the radio the other day.

Speaking of which, on to Lady Gaga. She's a recent Rolling Stone cover, I think she's well deserving of that. I just wish she didn't have a picture of her with machine guns attached to her boobs. As regular readers of this blog know, I'm a big Lady Gaga fan. She has so many amazing songs and is very theatrical. However I'm concerned about how skanky some of her latest work has been. Her new song, "Born That Way" is another instant classic.

However some of the images are very disturbing and there are things that I don't want my kids to see. That's why I don't have the video on this blog. People should be able to do what they want as long as they don't hurt anyone or have a negative influence on young children. However this could have a very negative affect on children. This video is so disturbing I can't even watch it anymore. What is up with Gaga wearing a bikini the whole video, the self touching, the simulated sex acts, the excessive touching of the dancers?

That video combined with the Mugler Paris Fashion Show that she was at last night has left me quite queasy. I think the fashion show appearance was even worse than the "Born This Way" video. I think sex is one of the greatest things a person can do. However, I really object to how the fashion industry uses sex to sell their clothes. The skimpy dressed, rail thin, gyrating models scream sex. A lot of these clothes aren't appropriate for public consumption. However when it's out in the public eye, like at a fashion show, that spreads the exploitation and the cheapening of sex. This is so prevalent that children can't but help see it and be influenced by it. Some would say it's not a negative influence, but I disagree.

Is Lady Gaga the antichrist? No! But does she need to be so provocative? Also no. Someone as truly creative as her should be able to present her music in a non-sexual way. Cheapening of sexuality is the lowest common denominator way of getting one's music noticed. Lady Gaga do you really want to use the same playbook as Nickelback? The members of Nickelback appear to be some of the dumbest, least talented people going. Their few good songs and lack of talent isn't going to gain many fans. But combining their limited talents with sex has really helped them become more popular. And do you know what, they are still boring! So they sold out and aren't any better.

Now on to BYU's first game following Brandon Davies being kicked off BYU for the rest of the season. I want to say even if Davies had been there last night, UNM still wins that game. BYU was just absolutely terrible last night. It was all the things I don't want to see out of this year's BYU team. First of all BYU only shot 34% from the field and an icy cold 19.2 % from 3 point land. Fredette was especially frosty, he only shot 1 for 9 on three pointers. Now I know that every team is going to have games like this.

What I particularly didn't like was how BYU responded to their frosty shooting. They didn't rally together. They didn't run their offense looking for good shots. Not running their offense resulted in a lot of forced shots and shots too early in the shot clock. Then Jimmer Fredette was working hard all night trying to pull out a miracle and kept on forcing things. I wish he would have been more as he was in the SDSU game. The Aztecs would double him, which means there's an open man. He usually found an open man, who usually had a much better shot than a Fredette force. That's why Fredette had 9 assists in that game. That kind of play then makes Fredette even more dangerous as BYU's opponent have to guard everybody.

Although the loss of Davies hurts the Cougars painfully, in a weird way this is good timing. Now BYU will have 3 to 5 games and several practices to learn how to play without him. After last night's performance it looks like they will need it. It will be interesting to see how they come out Saturday when they play Wyoming.

Strangely enough I think this has also helped the LDS Church, which I'm a devout member of. I know people across America are lambasting and ridiculing BYU for kicking Davies off of the team for premarital sex. I can hear people sneeringly saying "it's only premarital sex" what's the big deal?" Well the big deal is if people only had sex in a marital relationship look how many problems would be eliminated or reduced. The spread of STDs would be eliminated, teenage pregnancy and all the problems inherent in that would be reduced. (Some teenagers get married.) Prostitution, especially forced prostitution would be eliminated and many other issues would be resolved. Also the hyper sexualization of modern pop culture would be greatly reduced as well. Because sex and pop culture feed off each other in a negative way.

I know what you are thinking, that I'm being incredibly simplistic. Maybe so, but there's no denying that many of the societal ills we face now would be greatly minimized in marital only sex.

Back to BYU basketball. Although this will definitely hurt BYU in the NCAA Tournament, and probably shorten their run, I'm glad the Church practices what it preaches. It's refreshing to see a large entity stand by what they say. That's so extremely rare in modern America, especially in corporate America.

Disagree? Let me hear it.
