NCAA or NFL!

Hello,

What is more interesting right now, the NCAA Tournament or the NFL? As the NFLPA is arguing about whether they will let the college players go to the NFL Draft or not, the NCAA Tourney kicked off last night. In the first game of the tourney, UNC-Asheville beat AR-Little Rock 81-77 last night in overtime. I'm hoping that's an omen that this will be a great tournament. I was able to listen to the end of UNC-Asheville's win last night. Matt Dickey and J.P. Primm scored 22 points each to lead the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs to victory. Now the Bulldogs travel to Washington D.C. to play #1 seed Pittsburgh.

Does UNC-Asheville have a chance to win this game, no! Will they play as hard as they can and give a valiant effort, yes! Although if I had to pick a #1 seed to play, I'd pick Pittsburgh. They've been wildly inconsistent this season to say the least. The Panthers have only won 3 of their last six games. I think Pittsburgh is ripe for an upset, but it probably won't be this game. I'd feel more confident in UNC-Asheville if Dave Wannstedt was coaching this Panthers team. This is why I love the NCAA Tournament, these two players I've never heard of, I now find myself cheering for them. I have a rooting interest when UNC-Asheville plays Pittsburgh. Go Bulldogs!

Now on to the NFL Draft fiasco: ESPN pro football expert Adam Schefter interviewed NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, yesterday on ESPN. From ESPN: "Multiple league sources told Schefter on Monday that the NFLPA is putting into place a plan that would prevent each top college prospect from attending the draft. According to the sources, the 17 top prospects who ordinarily would have received an invitation to attend the draft have been contacted and it was recommended that they not attend.

One source told Schefter on Monday that the NFLPA plans to give the prospects the "same experience down the street." (Thanks to ESPN.)

What does the NFLPA expect to get from this? Everyone recognizes this as the old I'll take my basketball and go home ploy. Are they trying to look more pathetic and immature, well it's working. Meanwhile the NFL is arranging deck chairs as the Titanic sinks. It's planning on discussing more about possible suspensions for unneeded violent hits, possibly moving where the kick off will be from and changing replay rules. These things will be talked about at next week's owners meeting.

Auburn defensive dynamo, Nick Fairley, was on ESPN this morning. ESPN was showing some of his highlights. He was picking up quarterbacks, throwing them down and landing on them with his considerable girth. That's one of the few things I hate about football, that type of play is dirty and goes beyond well played football. He was just trying to hurt other players. Well Auburn isn't known for recruiting model citizens. Cam Newton and the Auburn players who were arrested a few days ago attest to that fact. I'm still waiting for karma to smack down both Auburn and Cam Newton. It's worth your time to google Sports Illustrated's rough draft of Cam Newton's Heisman acceptance speech. It's in the December 13th, 2010 issue. That rough draft is hilarious and spot on.

Also the NFL will be releasing the 2011 schedule in April as they always do. (Thanks as always to ESPN, the best place to get sports information.) I don't know if that's the NFL's misplaced confidence in the player's breaking quickly or just plain arrogance. Again I hope both sides go into extended battle on this and games are lost. I'll warn both sides though, the longer you're gone the more we'll realize we can live without you. I hope there are quite a few people already recognizing that. Since my favorite team is owned by Jerry Jones and quarterbacked by Tony Romo, an extended lockout could be preferable.

The most amazing thing about last year's NFL Draft is that 45 million people watched it. Can you believe that, why would you watch the NFL Draft? That's why you do something else as you follow the draft on the internet. Or read about it the next day in the paper. But actually sit down, ignoring more important things, to watch the NFL Draft? Crazy.

Am I the only one who has ever noticed that about the first 7 or 8 seconds of these two songs are almost exactly the same? Check it out.

What do you think? Both songs are amazing and both are on my iPod, which is where I noticed the very similar beginning of these two songs.

Rolling Stone has choked again on it's cover. Now they have Howard Stern on the cover? What the hell? I know he's a much loved radio celebrity. But what little I've heard of him has been profane and very stupid. He specializes in lowest common denominator humor. This is the easiest kind of humor. Keeping with the lowest common denominator theme, Rolling Stone is doing that with it's cover. Last issue we had Snooki and now Howard Stern. When Justin Bieber is the best of your last three covers, what does that say about the magazine? With people on the cover that are talentless, overpriced and overly self confident, who would fit in as the next cover? To keep with the theme it looks like the next Rolling Stone cover will be Rush Limbaugh. Although Rolling Stone is a liberal magazine, so they probably won't do that. Which is good as I that fatuous gasbag shouldn't get any more publicity.

Rolling Stone please go back to covers of musicians or at least real entertainers, not "entertainers". People with new or upcoming music include R.E.M., Lady Gaga, Adele, Avril Lavigne (although her new CD sucks!), Duran Duran, Green Day, Jennifer Hudson, The Cars and Panic At The Disco.

Also Rolling Stone recently has run features on old school musicians such as Elton John, Merle Haggard etc. I'd love to know what's going on with Stevie Nicks, David Gilmour, Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, Nikki Sixx and many others. In other words all the bands we grew up with and got us interested in your magazine in the first place!

About the game between UNC-Asheville and UALR, I agree with you that I'd like to see every NCAA tournament game be as thrilling as that! Really, i didn't look like UNC-Asheville would win because it seemed like whenver they came close to taking a lead, UALR would make their lead bigger. I hope UNC-Asheville enjoys their victory because they will get detroyed tomorrow against Pittsburgh!
