"Falling Skies" Finale Review, Black Stone Cherry Rocks!

Hello,

Last night's season finale was broken down into two parts. I'll review both episodes together as sometimes it's hard to remember what happened exactly in each episode.

Tonight's first episode starts off with many of the resistance is relaxing watching a cartoon. Meanwhile Dr. Glass and Tom Mason are looking at the innards of a skitter. It seems clear that the skitter probably was some other creature previously. This is confirmed definitively later when we see Megan. She clearly is being transformed into a skitter. That seems something that she wants.

Dai comes back from a mission with instructions from Porter. He's severely injured and is barely able to tell Weaver the plans. Those plans are contingent on the 4th and 5th Mass being able to meet up with the 2nd Mass. Although things aren't looking good for the 4th or 5th Mass or for Porter. Essentially they are going to try and bring down one of those alien base structures.

Rick the freak continues to be a freak. He can hear the frequencies coming from the skitters and mech communications. It seems Ben can hear those same frequencies though not all the time. Rick puts on his inner skitter and climbs up the wall and attacks Scott. As part of his skitter transformation, he's gaining some of their physical abilities. I loved him climbing up the wall, even though he's still seemingly human. He then escapes past several of the resistance, who for some reason fail to act. Rick spills the beans on everything about the resistance to Megan. The aliens, via Megan, rejects him and he has to go back to the humans, who are his second choice. I thought it was interesting they had the black kid utter the line "I'm not one of you, I'm not one of them". I have no idea what or if that means anything.

Someone on ew.com suggested that Rick was a spy. That's an interesting thought. But if he is why does he admit he told the aliens everything? I do think Rick is a spy, but I thought that ever since he has been rescued. Although Rick probably contends that he's been kidnapped.

I love the history references to Pearl Harbor, Lexington and Concord. The force that may be smaller but is fighting for its home. Mason could have also named the Vietnamese. They simply outlasted the Americans at a terrific loss of life.

This show also builds up the drama, "The Killing" did as well. But unlike "The Killing" the buildup has a nice payoff. The finale seems not to be have written in order to gurantee a second season. That worked for "The Killing", but if their ends up not being a second season of "The Killing" I wouldn't care. I'm afraid of more filler and unfiltered stupidity.

"Falling Skies" is the perfect length of season. They probably could have added a few more episodes and more filler, but they didn't. I remember watching last night's first episode and I was so glad there was going to be another episode that night. I look forward to this show every week. The ending felt natural. Enough story lines were wrapped up, but enough were continued so that I'll be thinking about it all year.

I do have several questions. What made the humans so "interesting" that the skitters wanted to open up a dialogue? Was it the fact that the humans figured out how to jam the alien frequencies? Was is that the humans were able to come up with the mech bullets. Was it the never give up fighting spirit they have shown? What do they hope to gain from the dialogue? It's obvious that they won't be able to compromise. Do the aliens have a request that the humans can provide?

Why haven't the tall, skinny aliens been given a nickname yet? Why did the aliens want to talk to Tom Mason? Why did they take him on their ship? Did they kill Weaver once Mason was in the ship. What's going on with Ben Mason in regards to being a skitter? Is he going to be a skitter no matter what or is there some way to escape the fate? Why does he not want to be a skitter and Rick the freak does? Rick said he missed his father last night. With his human father killed, did a skitter become father like to him?

Why did it take so long for Mason to get together with Dr. Glass? I know there's a war going on, but those two have had an attraction since the first episode. Also why hasn't anyone got together with Lourdes yet? She's very attractive, heck even Hal hasn't hooked up with her. She's one of the few female characters he hasn't hooked up with.

I've been listening to Black Stone Cherry all morning on Spotify, they really kick butt. I've seriously liked all their songs I've listened to. And I have nearly listened to every one of their songs. They seem to mainly tour in the southeast and it seems they don't come anywhere near to Salt Lake City. I'm suggesting that they make a Western swing. It would be good to see them live.

Here's a selection of some of their better songs. Having many of their videos with the embedding disabled by request is so short sighted though.

This is "Hell and High Water":

"Things My Father Said":

This is easily my favorite Black Stone Cherry song. "Blame It On The Boom Boom":

Black Stone Cherry get tender with "You":

It's about time for these guys to break out. Another tender and great song from the boys of Black Stone Cherry, "Stay":

Too bad the sound isn't a lot better on this song. It sounds like they kick butt with this song too. Black Stone Cherry covering Adele's amazing "Rolling In The Deep":

"White Trash Millionaire"

This is their last video for now, but this isn't the last you will hear from me about them. Anyone that quotes Haggard should be cool. "Rollin On":

I'm officially inviting Black Stone Cherry to Salt Lake City.
