Hello,
I know that every year has great CDs and songs. But some years really stand out, both 1980 and 1991 really seemed to break out of the normal years for music. Along with those years 1984 also really seems to be a great year. What made 1984 so great, first up the greatest soundtrack of all-time was released in 1984. That CD was Prince's "Purple Rain". Who else released CDs that year? Bruce Springsteen broke out in 1984 with "Born In The U.S.A", Tina Turner had her fantastic comeback CD "Private Dancer", another amazing soundtrack "Footloose" and also Madonna was "Like A Virgin".
Surely nobody else great released CDs that year, right? How about R.E.M.? Mr. Ronnie James Dio? Frankie Went to the pleasuredome in Hollywood and Chicago stayed home at #17, Wham made it big, Sade was living the diamond life. That's also when heavy metal was really breaking out, the previously mentioned Dio, The Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Dokken, Whitesnake and Twisted Sister was staying hungry and Ratt was staying out of the cellar.
Also New Wave was also in the midst of a banner year with Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell", Smiths had a hatful of hollow, The Replacements were letting it bed, The Thompson Twins went into the gap and U2 were trying to build the unforgettable fire.
This was only R.E.M.'s third CD and they were still three years away from "Document". Then in 1988 they released the amazing "Green", which is one of my favorite CDs of theirs. These songs are from R.E.M.'s "Reckoning": "Don't Go Back To Rockville":
