NBA Playoff Breakdown: Let's Hope Round 2 Is Much More Interesting.

Hello,

I love the Minions:

Cinderella's "Nobody's Fool":

These two videos are inspired by conversations on the "Share Music With Friends" group I'm in on Facebook.

Cake's "Rock N' Roll Lifestyle": I love the line "Excess ain't rebellion, you're drinking what they are selling".

From my iPod this morning. The Damn Yankees "Where You Goin' Now":

The Jazz's playoff run came to an ignominious end last night. They worked hard all season to be able to make the playoffs. Again my question is why? They were completely dominated by the Spurs in what may be the least competitive 2012 playoff series. Will those 4 playoff losses really pay some benefit in the future for the Jazz? Somehow I doubt that. And also by making the playoffs they hurt their upcoming draft position.

But the season is done now for the Jazz. Moving forward I would love to see the Jazz add a real point guard in the offseason. Neither Devin Harris, Earl Watson or Jamaal Tinsley are NBA quality starting point guards. I'd love to keep either Watson or Tinsley as a 3rd point guard for next season. In my fantasy world the Jazz would sign Steve Nash for the next two to three years. I would also like to see the Jazz get a young point guard and Nash can groom him. Theoretically the Jazz would be set at point guard for the next several years.

I would also love for the Jazz to get a consistent outside threat, someone to open up the floor for the big guys inside. The last consistent outside shooter that played for the Jazz was Jeff Hornaceck. He's now an assistant coach with the Jazz, let's hope he can pass on his magic touch. Last and not least I would love for the Jazz to be able to defend the 3 point shot better (at all?). Last night the Spurs only shot 37.8% from the field. However they made 45.5% of their three point shots, making 10 of 22.

According to Hoopsworld Draft Pick Debt, this is Utah's 2012 first round draft status: Receives Golden State’s 2012 first-round pick (top-7 protected in 2012 and 2013, top-6 protected in 2014, else 2014 and 2016 second-round picks) via Utah (from the Marcus Williams trade on 9/29/09) from the Deron Williams trade on 2/23/11."

In other words if the Warriors have the 8th pick or worse the Jazz will get their pick. That would be their only first round pick though. However it's quite likely the Jazz won't have a 2012 first round draft pick. That means for the Jazz to fix their weaknesses, they would need to go the free agency or trade route. However many players have been notorious about not wanting to come to Salt Lake. Derek Harper and Rony Seikaly being the two most obvious examples.

Three pointers can really swing the momentum of a game, almost certainly even more than a dunk. Stating the obvious here a three pointer is worth 3 points. A tie game can go to a 6 point lead on two made shots. A three pointer can either fuel or stop a rally. The thing that drives me crazy about the Jazz is they always seem to be on the wrong side of those three pointers.

Many time for those on the wrong end, you could say a three pointer is a cannonball to the gut.

Of the 8 playoff series that the 2012 playoffs started with, two of the series are already over. The Spurs swept the Jazz and Oklahoma City swept the Mavericks. The other six series are still going, but are on life support. One team has a 3-1 lead in all 6 series. So after an amazing first day in these playoffs, the first round quickly turned into some pretty drab basketball.

The following 4 series could end tonight, honestly I'm hoping that's exactly what happens.

1) The Pacers lead the Magic 3-1 with Game 5 tonight in Indiana. The Magic looked like they were going to make this a series when they won game 1 in Indiana. Unfortunately for them, that has been their peak so far. It's been nice not to have to hear Dwight Howard whining any more though, could he be injured more? Pacers in 5 games.

2) The Celtics lead the Hawks 3-1 with Game 5 tonight in Atlanta. The Hawks continue Atlanta's horrible trend of playoff mediocrity with their latest dismal showing. Does anyone think the Hawks still have a chance to win this series? I didn't think so. Celtics in 5 games.

3) The 76ers have thoroughly dominated the Bulls as Chicago continues losing players to injury. Game 5 tonight will be played in Chicago. Do the Bulls have enough left to force this series to a game 6? They might, but do we want a Game 6 in this series? NO! It's time to call on Chicago's 3 ex-Jazz players to lead the Bulls to victory. Okay, I was kidding. Out of all the first round series, this is the one most likely to go to a 6th game. Chicago still has a tough defense and a great coach. Even if Chicago wins tonight I still expect the 76ers to win the series. Philly in 6 games.

4) The hated LA Lakers have a 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets with Game 5 in LA tonight. Never for one minute did I think the Nuggets had a chance to win this series. However I did love them winning Game 3 and pushing the Lakers to the brink in Game 4. Look for the Lakers to step on the Nuggets throat tonight and win easily. The only question about tonight's game is will the Lakers win by more than 20 points. Lakers in 5 games.

The Lakers advancing tonight will set up what might be the second round's best series: Oklahoma City vs. The Lakers. I'll be cheering for the Thunder with all my might. I'm a proud Lakers and Kobe Bryant hater. Ron Arrest will be back for the Lakers. I expect a hard fought 7 game series. That will include an epic battle in Game 7 in Oklahoma City to determine who'll go to the Western Conference Finals. However I would love to see the Thunder sweep the Lakers and for James Harden to get a measure of justice against the cheap shot Artest.

Then let's hope the final two first round series end tomorrow night. For some reason I've been extremely bored by the Grizzilies-Clippers series. I think part of that is I'm tired of the Chris Paul and Blake Griffin hype. I thought either team could win this series, but I did expect a much better effort from Memphis.

Then to me the most interesting series of the first round has been the Heat-Knicks series. Team Destiny vs. Team Dysfunction. I thoroughly expected the Heat to dominate this series and I look for them to blow out the Knicks tomorrow night. The alleged superstar, Carmelo Anthony, hasn't exactly thrown the Knicks on his back. After shooting 34% in the first 3 games, Anthony finally shot above 50% in Game 4. He made 15 of 29 shots on the Knicks hard fought victory over the Heat. I expect both he and the Knicks to resume their mediocrity in Game 5. I'm glad I'll be able to watch that game. Heat in 5 games. Go Heat!

In honor of the New York and the Beastie Boys, but not the Knicks:

Just like every Carmelo has several bricks a game:

With all 8 series being one-sided it's completely possible that there will be no playoff games Thursday and Friday. I sort of expect some "help" from the NBA so at least one of tonight's series will continue on.

For the second round, I'm wondering is anyone clamoring for a Spurs-Clippers showdown? How about Boston-Philly? Maybe a generation ago when the 76ers had Dr. J and Moses Malone. Do the Pacers have a chance against the Heat?
