2013 Dodgers Daily: Billingsley's Decent Debut

Hello,

Last night the Dodgers jumped to a 4-1 lead and held on for a 4-3 victory. Chad Billingsley made his season debut for the Dodgers. He pitched 6 innings, scattered 5 hits and gave up one run. That's an ERA of 1.50, which is very good. Billingsley had 3 strike outs and 3 walks. He threw 94 pitches and 54 of them were strikes. That's a performance that's a nice change of pace following Josh Beckett.

Carl Crawford continued his incredibly hot start, he was 2 for 4 and hit his first home run of the season. Crawford is now hitting .464 on the season and has an astonishing .531 OBP. Matt Kemp was 2 for 5 yesterday and I hope he's rounding into the hitter he was last season before he injured himself. Kemp was able to raise his batting average to .167.

What's upcoming: the Dodgers end their three game series with the Padres tonight. Tonight's expected starters are Zack Greinke (1-0) vs. Jason Marquis (0-1) at Petco Park. The Dodgers will be in Arizona for a three game series starting tomorrow. As of Thursday morning the Diamondbacks are tied with the Giants at 6-3 and currently are tied for the NL West lead. The Dodgers (5-3) trail both teams by a 1/2 game.

What's going on with the two surprise teams of last season? Obviously that's the A's and Orioles. Last night the A's won their 7th straight game, they were lead by Brandon Moss' 5 RBIs. The A's are now 7-2, but only lead Texas (6-3) by 1 game.

Last season's other darling, the Orioles, are 4-4 and playing in the very tough AL East. Currently the Orioles are tied for second place with the Yankees. Both teams trail the first place Red Sox (5-3) by 1/2 game.

Speaking of the Red Sox, their consecutive home game sell out streak has ended. That streak had started in 2003, but had become a farce the last couple of seasons. It's hard to believe the Red Sox were selling out games with last season being so abysmal and also Fenway clearly had empty seats! The Red Sox were being a bit disingenuous with the so-called sell out streak. Thank goodness they allowed that so-called streak to end.

Also speaking of the Red Sox, can they just call John Lackey a bust now and cut their losses? And please whatever you do Boston please do not see if the Dodgers are interested in trading for Lackey.

Meanwhile this season's darling so far has been the Atlanta Braves, they completed their second series sweep last night. Atlanta is now 8-1 on the season. Atlanta is only leading the second place Nationals (6-2) by 1.5 games.
