"No Ordinary Family", "The Event", "Hawaii Five-0", Wade Phillips

Hello,

Last night was another good episode of "No Ordinary Family". This and "Rubicon" continue to be the best new shows of this Fall season. All the main characters all have their charms. I love the fact that the Powell family all have super powers, but that's almost beside the point. It's just a nice family show with a happy, loving couple at the center of the story. The couple have flaws and haven't had a "perfect" marriage, but that actually enhances their story.

After a rocky start, "The Event" is starting to pick up in quality. For me, it's all about the story. A lot of time, modern entertainment means something is blown up when they can't think of a story (see "The Rock" or "Armageddon", two of the worst movies ever). This week "The Event" actually had a compelling storyline. There was also some cleverness in the story and some nice misdirection. We also some of the back story about some of the characters and how they became who they are. I'm actually caring about the characters now as I get to know them.

That's when "E.R." started going to hell is when they focused on action over story. About the first 10 years of that show it was great. It then jumped the shark and to recapture the past glory, the action was amped up. How many times did the ER actually blow up? Also another sign of a poor product, the hype intensified. In other words when you jump the shark, it's time to quit. "American Idol" you still have time!!!

Now "Hawaii Five-0" has declined from a pretty good first episode. This show is now one of those that it doesn't matter whether you watch it or not. If you miss it, no loss. If you see it, it was a hour of half-decent entertainment. You had a few laughs, saw some gorgeous women and scenery and the characters are likable.

However it's not must see TV like "Mad Men" and "Rubicon". I can't quite put "No Ordinary Family" in that category quite yet.

Speaking of not must watch TV, Jerry Jones and his son Stephen have said that Wade Phillips' job isn't in danger. What? How inept do the Cowboys have to become for Phillips to lose his job? The Cowboys have never fired a coach in the middle of the season, well there's always a first time. Jerry and Stephen, how many times do the Cowboys have to lose before his job is in danger? The Cowboys have a brutal schedule this season, they only play two more teams below .500 the rest of the season. One of those team is the Vikings on the road this weekend.

With Dallas I cheer for them to win, but if they lose I console myself in the fact that the Phillips is closer to being fired. With that brutal schedule Dallas might have the same record. When you lose to a superior team, there's no shame in that. But when you lose because of stupid coaching mistakes something needs to be done. (I'm feeling just a little bit like one of the passengers on the Titanic when they realized it was going down.)
