The Curse of Riley Nelson, The Curse Of Not Having A Real Quarterback

Hello,

In perhaps the most surprising game of the day, BYU somehow found a way to keep close to Notre Dame. Before the game I would have just been glad if BYU scored at least once and only lost by 3 or 4 touchdowns. BYU is decent everywhere except for the quarterback. BYU even led at half surprising both BYU and Notre Dame fans.

Unfortunately when it mattered the most Riley Nelson again played good enough to make people think he's a real college quarterback. But then he missed a wide open Cody Hoffman, on a play that would have resulted in a touchdown for BYU. On that same drive Nelson used one of two BYU's remaining time outs, which came back to haunt them. On that possession BYU eventually had to punt. Notre Dame then ground down most of the final six minutes, leaving BYU with only 30 seconds to try and do anything. Stupidly BYU had used two of their time outs earlier in the half and were only left with one. If they would have only had one more time out, that could have saved at least 30 seconds coming off the clock. Also it was fitting that BYU's final offensive play was a Nelson interception.

The announcers were saying that BYU is fundamentally sound, um no they aren't. There has been way too many times they used their timeouts too early. Also how many stupid penalties have they had? Combine that with a good high school quarterback and BYU was lucky to finish as close as they did.

Next year I hope BYU has a real quarterback. It's hard for me to believe that Nelson is really the best quarterback on BYU this season. (If Nelson was still in Logan, I predict that he'd be their third string quarterback.) Thankfully he's graduating this season and Bronco will be forced to consider other quarterback options. Whether it's Taysom Hill, Jason Munns or the Kuresa kid, hopefully one of those qbs can lead BYU back to where they should be next season. BYU closes out the season playing three terrible teams (those teams combined records are now 7-14) I hope that Bronco gives one of those players some snaps. With this terrible season nearing it's end, it's time to start preparing for the future. Let Munns or Kuresa play a whole game, what does BYU have to lose?

BYU has an incredibly tough schedule next season, it may be the toughest in the nation. Hopefully getting those young qbs experience now will lead to victories next season. How rare is it anymore for any team to use only one quarterback for a whole season?

Thank you to BYU's amazing defense for keeping in the Cougars in all the games except for OSU. I don't even want to know what BYU's record would be if it wasn't for that stout defense. Too bad that same defense can't come back next season.

That being said that Notre Dame has a legitimately great defense. I've watched them shut down teams all season, which is why I was happy that BYU even scored. That defense really needs to step up next week for the Irish though. They travel to play the offensively explosive Sooners. What will they do against a team with a real quarterback?
