USC-Utah, BYU-USU, Baltimore-Texas and Braves-Cardinals

Hello,

Last night, to one's surprise, USC beat Utah 38-28. To make it interesting the Trojans even spotted the Utes 14 points. Alas it wasn't enough and the Trojans dominated the game the rest of the way. Utah scored a meaningless touchdown at the end of the game and made the game more respectable. Next week Utah will travel to play #25 UCLA and will drop to 2-4 on the season. But be glad Ute fans, at least your starting quarterback is decent. I'd much rather have Jon Hays than Riley Nelson any day.

I'm hoping that Bronco Mendenhall won't actually start Riley Nelson as quarterback tonight. I realize they have more history together than he and Hill, but that's no reason to start the inferior quarterback. There's not one good reason to play Nelson. If I'm generous he's an average quarterback. He's not the answer, unless the question is who shouldn't play quarterback at BYU. This will be a tough enough game for the Cougs without having Nelson play. Once again it's time to go with Taysom Hill. BYU isn't going to have a winning season this season, but it would be good for Hill to have all the experiences he can have.

There's no guarantee how good of a quarterback Hill will end up being, but shouldn't BYU give him every opportunity to be at least the next John Beck?

For those of you who are still longing for Jake Heaps at BYU, please stop. He's at best an average quarterback. Next season he may play for Kansas. The Jayhawks head coach is Charlie Weis. He's a great coordinator, but has shown he's not a very good head coach. If he can't win at Notre Dame, he's not going to win at Kansas. Especially if his quarterback is Jake Heaps. Heaps will be forgotten in a couple of years from now. Like Ben Olsen he came to BYU with a lot of fanfare, but he flamed out never living up to his potential.

BYU has a brutal schedule next season, it would be great that our starting quarterback be battle tested. Nelson's eligibility will have run out by then, but Hill will still have 3 years left. Nelson won't give the Cougars a better chance to play this year either, so why play him now? As I heard on the Gunther and Graham radio show, "Riley Nelson is a fullback that can't throw". I can't think of a better description of him than that.

Please Bronco start Taysom Hill. Using some of your logic, Hill has the momentum so stick with him. (Just please don't go for a two point conversion when your team has only scored one touchdown all game.)

Also today are the first two games of the new Wild Card format. It will be interesting to see how it works out. Both games should be good. I'm cheering for the Orioles and Braves to win.
