Dodgers Daily: April 30th, 2013: Welcome Back Hanley!, Braves Owning Nationals

Hello,

Thanks to Root Sports out of Colorado as I was able to catch a bit of the Dodgers-Rockies game last night. I should be able to see some of the Dodgers-Rockies game tonight also. Anyway the Dodgers continue flirting with .500, after last night's win the Dodgers are back to .500. Too bad a .500 record is only good enough to guarantee a 4th place finish in the NL West and nothing else.

Hyun-Jin Ryu had another good game for the Dodgers, thank goodness the Dodgers were able to pick him up as a free agent this past offseason. Ryu gave up 3 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings pitched. He also had 12 strikeouts as he improved his record to 3-1. The scariest Ryu moment for me as a Dodgers fan was when he was running the bases after his sacrifice bunt attempt in the second inning. In trying to prevent a double play he stretched out for first base. He was out but thankfully he didn't hurt himself, afterwards I thought of all the ways he could have hurt himself on that play. Ryu is the Dodgers second best healthy pitcher, losing him would have been a devastating loss.

Ryu also had a hit and RBI for the Dodgers. I know it's a small sample size, but Ryu is hitting .417 this season. Again I'm so glad that he didn't injure himself in the second inning. Although with Ryu being a slow runner I sort of wished Don Mattingly would have let him hit away at that at bat. I know Mattingly using the percentages strategy. I also know if Ryu would have failed that Mattingly could have been criticized for not going with the percentages.

Hanley Ramirez made his first start of the season after returning from suffering a thumb injury in the World Baseball Classic. Ramirez was 2 for 4 and hit a home run. This Dodgers lineup needs all the home runs they can get.

Upcoming tonight it will be the $17 million dollar man Josh Beckett pitching for the Dodgers. With Beckett's 0-3 record and his high ERA I don't have a lot of confidence in him. I also don't have a lot of confidence in the Dodgers winning tonight, unless they find a way to score 10 runs. Pitching for the Rockies will be Juan Nicasio, what a great name. Nicasio is 3-0 this season.

Meanwhile the Braves continued their absolute domination of the Nationals, winning last night 8-1. Tim Hudson earned his 200th career win, he pitched 7 innings gave up 3 hits and only 1 run. Hudson also hit his third career home run. Although that home run was briefly in Bryce Harper's glove before he dropped it.

Atlanta is 5-0 against the Nationals this season and still have two more games left in this series. The Braves haven't just been beating Washington, they've dominated them. After a brief rough patch it looks like the Braves are back. The Braves are only 4-6 over their last 10 games, but they won two games in a row. Meanwhile the Nationals fell below .500, to 13-14, but are still second place in the NL East. Atlanta leads the Nationals by 4.5 games. Could this finally be the year the Braves win the World Series. I would be happy with a Braves-Red Sox World Series. I was thinking last night how much more fun the playoffs are when there's a team I'm cheering for playing in them.

Anchored by Jon Lester's strong pitching I was fairly confident that the Boston Red Sox would win yesterday, boy was I wrong. The Red Sox lost 9-7 as Lester gave up 6 hits and 6 runs in 6 innings. In spite of one of Boston's aces giving up 6 runs, the Red Sox kept it close. They even briefly take a 7-6 lead in the 7th inning on David Ortiz's 3 run double. Ortiz continues his hot hitting and was 2 for 5 in last night's game. Although that 2 for 5 lowered his season batting average to .500. That's a sign of how hot he's been hitting that his batting average could actually lower to .500.

The good news for the Red Sox is that John Farrell didn't have to decide between Joel Hanrahan or Andrew Miller to close the game. Although Hanrahan did pitch the final inning last night. He gave up 2 hits in his one inning pitched, which probably helps Farrell stick with Miller as the Red Sox closer. Clay Buchholz will attempt to go to 6-0 when he pitches for the Red Sox tonight.

I'm so glad that Major League Baseball is back!
