Dodgers Daily May 6th, 2013: Broken Record, The 4 Run Rule & Boston Has The Best Record In The MLB

Hello,

This Dodgers season is becoming a broken record. LA continues to have ineffective pitching and very little offense. Last night the Dodgers lost yet again, this time 9-2. LA has lost 5 games in a row and 7 of 10. The combination of a wimpy offense and poor starting pitching is killing this Dodgers team. I love writing a blog, but this blog is only a hobby. I have a job and kids so I don't have a lot of time to figure out stats. The following stats I came up with quickly. My goal was that I wanted to find some kind of stat to show how ineffective the Dodgers offense has been this season. I don't have any stats to back up that a team that scores 4 runs will win more MLB games than they'll lose. That's just my observation after watching baseball for many years.

Thanks to ESPN.com I went through all the Dodgers games this season and figured out what record the Dodgers would have if the other team scored exactly 4 runs each game. If indeed that was the case the Dodgers would only have 7 wins this season. They would've lost 20 games and 4 games would have gone to extra innings. Assuming the Dodgers won all 4 of those extra innings games, they'd still be 11-20 at this point. With the Dodgers offense so inept, it would be more realistic if the Dodgers only won 2 of those 4 extra innings games. From that perspective I'm glad the Dodgers are 13-18.

Due to injury issues (Billingsley, Lilly, Greinke) the Dodgers were forced to send inexperienced Chris Capuano to the mound last night. Capuano promptly gave up 8 hits and 5 earned runs in 4 innings. He falls to 0-2 on the season and now has a 10.38 ERA.

Good thing for the Dodgers that one of their veteran pitchers is pitching tonight. Right? Um no, that's the $17 million man Josh Beckett. He of the 0-4 record and 4.75 ERA. I predict the Dodgers will lose again tonight. The Dodgers broken record looks like it will be playing again.

The Dodgers scores last night were a Matt Kemp sacrifice fly and yet another Carl Crawford solo home run. Crawford continues to lead the Dodgers with home runs, he has 5. Although summing up the ineptness of the Dodgers offense he only has 8 RBIs. Crawford continues to do very well for the Dodgers as he's hitting .308 this season.

The Dodgers won 6 of of their first 9 games, since then they've gone 7-15. LA has played so bad of late that they've sunk to 5th and last place in the NL West. With the Dodgers losing and the Padres winning San Diego bypassed LA. The Dodgers are now 5.5 games behind the Giants and  a 1/2 game behind fourth place San Diego.

Meanwhile some of my teams can actually score runs. Boston scored 6 runs last night, but they did get a gift from the Twins in order for them to win last night. Boston is back to having the best record in the MLB at 21-11. They lead the AL East second place teams by 2 games. Although Baltimore and New York have slightly different records both team are tied for second place.

Although it's concerning that the Red Sox went from having two experienced closers in Joel Hanrahan and Andrew Miller to having none at all. The Red Sox will use Junichi Tazawa. The Red Sox still have that explosive offense to bail them out if Tazawa has struggles. Boston will be playing on Wednesday Night Baseball tomorrow night.

For the Braves Brian McCann showed a little rust in his first game this season, he just was barely activated from injury. He was 0 for 4 and struck out once. I'm just glad he's getting back into the swing early in the season. This Braves team is loaded!
