NBA Playoffs Conference Finals: Snoozefest, Red Wings Bounce Back

Hello,

Can somebody please wake me up when the NBA Finals are over? Today is the first game of the Spurs -Grizzlies Western Conference Finals. Sarcasm alert: Boy, I can hardly wait for this battle of two evenly matched teams in what will be an ugly defensive battle. I don't want to say this series is going to be ugly, but it's low ratings will show that. I don't think I'm going to watch much of any of either conference finals. While those two teams are beating the crap out of each other.....

... In the Eastern Conference Finals how long the series will last depends on only one thing. That's how interested will the Heat be? If they are fully interested I wouldn't be surprised that the Heat sweep. Miami continues to dominate as the 2013 NBA playoffs continue to be much ado about nothing. This season there's the Heat and everybody else. Miami is 8-1 in this playoffs but should be 8-0. The Bulls were able to catch the Heat on one of their not very interested days and grab game 1. However the only thing that did was make the Heat much more interested. It's not a coincidence that the Heat won the next 4 games.

While the Pacers-Knicks battled, the Heat were resting up. The Heat eliminated the Bulls this past Wednesday, which means they'll have a week to rest until the Eastern Conference Finals start. Also the Heat don't have to travel. That will give Dwight Wade plenty of time to go to high school proms and rest up his aching knees.

Once the Heat meet the winner of the Western Conference Finals, the Heat will probably be coming off yet another extended break. Everything in this playoffs is conspiring for the Heat to win the NBA title. And sad to say for Heat haters, next season the Heat will probably be even better.

The New York Carmelos were eliminated from the playoffs, although this season should be considered a relative success as the Carmelos reached the second round. Even if they would have somehow beat the Pacers, they then would have been swept by the Heat. I'm sorry Knicks fans, but when your best player is Carmelo Anthony, you aren't ever going to win anything. Anthony took the Knicks about as far as he can this season and I expect the Knicks to regress next season.

By his lower than a superstar standards Anthony had a good game. He hit over half of his shots and actually met the Meads metric, at 105%. He scored 39 points on a combined 37 shots from the field and free throw line. Unlike a certain overrated center in LA, Anthony is stone cold brilliant from the free throw line. At the free throw line Anthony was 8 for 8 against the Pacers in Game 6. In fact, Anthony played such a great game that he even had 2 assists! However in the fourth quarter he reverted to his normal Anthony level of performance. He was 2 for 7, committed 3 turnovers and was absolutely owned on a block by Roy Hibbert.

And J.R. Smith, is this a joke? Overall in Game 6 he was 4 for 15 and only 2 for 9 from the three point line. He scored 15 points on 15 field goals. It was good he hit all 5 of his free throws to help hide his poor shooting from the field. And I know he won the 6th Man of the Year, but honestly I wouldn't want this shameless gunner on any team of mine. He seems to be right at home with the New York Isolations though.

The Knicks will continue to be hurt by one of the worst contracts in NBA history, they're still committed to Amar'e Stoudemire for two more years. Was that a Donnie Walsh goodbye kick in the butt? The Knicks, wait for it, will pay Stoudemire $21.7 million to be an oft injured, can't function with Anthony potential 6th man. Too funny.

That reminds me, which is the biggest joke franchise in all of professional sports. Is it the Dallas Cowboys, New York Knicks or the New York Jets?

Speaking of the overrated center in LA, it's so good that I've had to hear so very little about Dwight Howard this offseason. After his and the Lakers flame out in the first round, Dwight has actually stayed away from his longed for spotlight. Thank goodness, but there's really very little suspense about where Howard will sign this season. The Lakers can pay the most and Howard is all about himself. LA can pay Howard up to $118 for 5 years so he'll be a Laker next season without any question. And instead of working to be better, Howard will continue to not work on those weaknesses in his game. As he physically declines his game will continue to slip next season. I guarantee the Lakers will regret the day they signed Howard to a high paying long term extension. Will it end up being as bad as the contract that Stoudemire signed with the Knicks?

Meanwhile in the NHL the Detroit Red Wings bounced back in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals with a 4-1 thumping of the Blackhawks on their home ice. When the Blackhawks won the first game 4-1, I thought the series was over. Again I know very little about hockey and the only NHL team I pay attention to is the Red Wings. But I know the Red Wings have a lot of cagey veterans with playoff savvy. And unlike the Knicks the Red Wings have actually had real success in the post season. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the Red Wings have made this second round series interesting.

The Red Wings won their final 4 games of the season to slide into the 7th seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Next they beat the #2 seeded Ducks in 7 games, although the Ducks owned home ice. Now they are playing the #1 seeded Blackhawks who blasted them 4-1 in Game 1. In game 2 the Red Wings answered the bell by returning the 4-1 rout on Chicago's home ice. Now the Red Wings have home ice advantage, but will they be able to keep it. Game 3 is Monday Night in Detroit. Go Red Wings!
