"AI" Top 8 boys and results show March 10th and 11th, 2010

Hello,

This will be a little less dreary than most of my recent blogs.

First of all I would just like to say I thought as a rule the guys were fantastic on Wednesday night. Even guys I previously didn't like did good jobs and it will be another shakeup for my rankings this Sunday.

1) Lee Dewyze sang Owl City's "Fireflies". I thought it was pretty good. Owl City obviously ripped off Death Cab for Cutie for that song. I thought Lee Dewyze's version was as good as Owl City's version. However my favorite Lee Dewyze moment is when he sang Hinder's "Lips Of An Angel". Simon told him he was really glad Lee was in the competition, although he also said that Dewyze had "no moment" with that song. I expected him to make it into the Top 12. Grade: B, buy? no.

2) Alex Lambert sang Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble". I wish "AI" contestants would stop singing this song. It's an okay song, but that's it. I love Alex Lambert's voice, but I wish he would get rid of the ugly mullet already. (In a battle between Lamberts I prefer Alex over Adam. A fantastic singer who is lacking in confidence vs. an over hyped singer who likes to screech as much as he sings.) Ellen now calls him a "mushy banana". I would have predicted he would have sailed into the Top 12. Grade B-, buy no? even though that was his last "Idol" performance. The song is just not good enough.

3) Tim Urban was definitely the biggest surprise of the night by doing a pretty good version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". That has to be one of the all-time great songs. I don't know if any "Idol" will ever be able to top Jason Castro's version though. Castro's version is just breathtaking.

Allison Crowe's "Hallelujah" is pretty cool as well. She sings the full song on the version I have. Anyway back to Tim Urban. It was definitely his best performance I've ever seen. I was highly skeptical that he was going to make the Top 12. Grade: B+ Buy? No, why buy this version when there's so many better versions out there?

4) Andrew Garcia sang Christina Aguilera's classic "Genie In A Bottle". That's truly another one of the great songs of all-time. This was one of the most disappointing performances of the night. Dude you need to get some new glasses. I'm not sure what kind of statement Garcia is trying to make with the glasses he currently has. Kara said he "peaked too early". Simon called his performance "A little bit desperate". I'd thought he would have sailed through to the Top 12, but the way they framed it it made me wonder. Grade: B+, buy? no.

5) Casey James sang Keith Urban's "You'll Think of Me". I listened to Urban's version on napster after the show and his version is very boring. Casey James' version is 100 times better. I think the judges were a little hard on him, his was one of the best performances of the night. Based on that performance and prior performances I expected him to sail into the Top 12. He also could be a contender. Grade: B+, buy: maybe.

6) Aaron Kelly sang Lonestar's "I'm Already There" (a song that makes me think of the sadness in my life due to my current situation). I thought he did pretty good. Randy also said he did "really good". The judges were generally full of praise. I thought he would make it to the Top 12 based on his Kris Allen, cuteness factor. Grade: A, buy? maybe.

7) Todrick Hall sang Queen's "Somebody To Love". This was his best performance since his audition by far. Randy said "Todrick is back". Ellen said he was "a brave, brave man" for singing that song. Queen's lead singer, Freddy Mercury, did indeed have one of the all-time great male voices. (What he does on "Bohemian Rhapsody" is amazing.) I knew he was one of the singers more likely to go home as he hasn't shown enough. I thought this performance was fantastic though. Grade: B+, buy? no.

8) Michael Lynche sang Maxwell's "A Woman's Worth". When he started singing this I wondered what he was doing. It starts out a very boring song. However at the end of the song he brought it on home. Of course Kara cried over this performance, which felt just a bit melodramatic. Randy had another one of his strange critiques using such words as "yo, yo", "crazy" and "dope". Really there isn't someone out there who can do this job better than Jackson? I wasn't sure whether he would make the Top 12 or not. Grade: B, buy: no.

Results show: parenthesis indicate where they are in themusicaddict's rankings.

First of all must we continue to deal with the horrid and fake, lip syncing robot like group performances.? Why? Why? Why? "AI" producers please stop these now! These are the worst two minutes of each week of "American Idol", even worse than Randy's "critiques".

Didi Benami (10), her tears and Sioban Magnus (3) make it into the Top 12. In the first elimination of the night it was either between Paige Miles (9) or Katelyn Epperly (4). Seriously I thought this was a no-brainer. Surprisingly Paige survived to another week. Someone that doesn't have a chance to win the whole thing, where I thought Katelyn had a much better chance of being your next American Idol.

Then Ryan has Lee Dewyze (5), Todrick Hall (19), Tim Urban (20) and Casey James (6) all came to the stage. He had them all line up. We find out that Todrick is going home in spite of his solid "Somebody To Love".

Then Scott Macintyre and Matt Giraud sang Billy Joel's "Tell Her About It". Scott was meh, but Matt Giraud sounded fantastic as he ripped into that song.

Next up was Crystal Bowersox (2), Michael Lynch (14) Lacey Brown (17) and Aaron Kelly (11) all make it into the Top 12. That fills up 12 of the seats. The last men's spot is down between two of my favorite male contestants. Those people being Alex Lambert (7) and Andrew Garcia (1). I don't think either one should go home. Can we do a recount, it should be Tim Urban going home. Alex Lambert unfortunately is the guy going home. We can tell it means a lot to him because he can barely keep himself composed over such a sad situation. (Alex believe me I understand.)

Then it's down to two ladies: Katie Stevens (8) vs. Lilly Scott (12). I actually thought that Lilly Scott was going to advance, even though I have Stevens rated higher. I was surprised when Lilly Scott is going home.

Here's a pretty cool mash up for you, especially if you like both Prince and Lady Gaga.
